Welcome back to another episode of PARK PROFILES, the series where we explore some of the most important figures in National Park and conservation history. Today, we're taking a look at Horace Albright. Along with Stephen Mather, Albright was an essential figure in the early days of the National Park Service. These 2 were perfect complements of one another: yin and yang, peanut butter and jelly, Sam and Frodo. Mather was the marketer, building public support and legitimacy for the fledgling NPS, while Albright was the man behind the scenes, putting everything together and laying the legal and administrative framework for the beloved institution we have today. Horace Albright is a personal hero of mine, and I hope you enjoy learning more about him.

I didn't realize he was such a prolific author. I used several of his books/writings to research this episode, but I need to go back and read some of them all the way through just for my own benefit.

Sometime in the last 3 years the City of Bishop named a street after Horace Albright. It should have been done a long time ago, but at least it is in place now. The street accesses parts of the city park.

Another great video man! Appreciate your effort and the information you contribute with. I have personally been thinking about how my country (Norway) should reorganize its national parks into more of the American standard. Meaning to combine natural and cultural history into one and to do a better job at marketing them to the people.

Thanks so much, glad I could help spread the word across the pond 😊 I know there are many park systems around the world modeled on the NPS as well, but I don't really know enough about the Norway Park System to say whether that would be the best move or not. Heck, that would be an interesting video topic by itself! As this channel grows, I want to incorporate more international coverage and park systems in other countries - there are just so many fascinating protected areas to cover!

The public lands surrounding the town of Sedona are part of the Coconino National Forest administered by the U.S. Forest Service. The spectacular red rock formations and landscapes are recognized and protected as part of this National Forest.

@@ShrekSwag The City of Sedona is located on private lands developed for municipal purposes such as retail establishments as well as residential purposes. The public lands surrounding the city, including the distinctive red rock landscapes are part of the Coconino National Forest and administered by the U.S. Forest Service. There are wilderness areas on that National Forest protecting much of those landscapes. The uniqueness of these landscapes is recognized in the Coconino National Forest Land and Resource Management Plan. It is up to the Congress of the United States to evaluate areas for inclusion in a National Park unit, such as a National Park or National Monument. There are a lot of locations in northern Arizona and southern Utah that look similar to the Sedona red rock landscape.

Yes and yes! I believe they filmed LoTR in several National Park in New Zealand, and LOTS of movies have been filmed in National Parks in the US. If you're familiar with Letterboxd, I'm currently working on a list that compiles all of those locations, but yeah, that would make an excellent video topic!
