Saad doo bik'eezhdiniidah "Don't let words hurt you"
In this week's video Navajo Historian, Wally Brown, teaches about the phrase "Saad doo bik'eezhdiniidah".
This advice was given freely in the old ways. It was part of the learning cycle.
And learning the traditional way requires you to follow the teachings.
This teaching may be easier said than done. Especially in a world where hurtful words are everywhere.
The teaching is good, and the advice is sound. "Saad doo bik'eezhdiniidah".

When we were little, besides the “sticks and stones” we would say “I’m rubber you’re glue, whatever you say bounces off of me and sticks to you”...not deeply spiritual, but we got the meaning!

Your videos are beautiful. It's not the words that sends out disharmony but it is the vibrational frequency within the words we put out and receive. It's the intent within the words. We cannot help but to feel that. However there is always the choice in which thoughts and actions we engage with in response to whatever we have received. I can feel hurt or threatened but I also have the power to choose how to deal with that. Free will. Sometimes I fail, other times I succeed. To say no words affect me is spiritual bypassing. Everything is energy, you cannot avoid being affected by others but you can choose how you handle challenging situations. We are temporarily flawed material creatures as well as infinite spiritual beings. Thanks for sharing 💗

When someone criticizes me I first stop and consider it. If it is true then I take it as an opportunity to correct myself. If it is false then I know that it does not apply to me it is not my problem so it doesn't bother me.

I have wanted to comment on these videos but out of concern that I might offend I have remained silent. I moved to new Mexico from Florida two years ago my wife and I bought a house on the edge of the Navajo reservation. learning the ways and culture of the Navajo has been a challenge. I started watching your videos to learn how to interact with native Americans with out seeming rude. Now I watch your videos because each and every one seems to speak to my life in some way. I too am from the east I too came here looking for a better life. where I live I have open sky's and open country with the Zuni's to look at. I am so happy to be here and so thank full for your videos.

This is so true, may try to use words like a snare. To keep you from moving fwd in life or to try and trap you by getting you to react in a negatively. The trap is to get you to do something in an unlawful matter to get you in trouble with the law in hopes that you get arrested to give you a criminal record. This would prevent you stopping them in what they are trying to accomplish as you will not be around to hinder their plans. It is up to you as the elder said to practice self control so as to keep on fighting the good fight. As alway wise words. Thanx.👍

I appreciate your wisdom, thank you for sharing your beautiful and correct way of life. One time I was in my garage and I heard and Eagle screech out in the distance, it inspired me, I wrote a couple words, basically feeling and thinking to myself, I said I take life so personally that I feel connected, I know I am, I believed I heard the Eagle and I believe the Eagle heard me, negative hateful words don’t affect me, trust me, I wasn’t saying I take other people’s thoughts or opinions of me faze me. I could care less, I do care what God and my mentors think, I appreciate constructive criticism, I take life personally meaning, the connection with it, I love it, all of it, I know who I am. I love your way of life, your mindset, and your culture. I’m sorry the tribes had to go through what you went through, and are still going through, It was wrong. 🙏

I think words can only hurt you (further) when the words are in line with what you believe about yourself and that belief is based on a lie... When I feel not good enough, (wound and lie) and a person calls me something which basically says I am worthless, it will hurt me (deeper). When I believe I am good enough, those words can't hurt me. I might even see it comes from the wounds of the person saying it. It's interesting that you started with explaining it in a teaching context. I think true instructors are completely healed.. in some cultures they are called masters. Because we can't look inside the person instructing and can not see the intentions and wounds in that person, I think we should be careful with giving someone a title with our mouths and we may remember that True Teaching will never hurt us because it's encouraging us and strengthening us. Also, if someone authentic teaches something, it means this person has been through a similar process yet and will be patient with you because in you he/she sees him/herself. There is no point in pushing a teaching, because it's a matter of the heart, a matter of feeling to recognize and therefore choose to embrace the instruction and to acknowledge the Instructor. Thank you for explaining, I am happy I have found your channel. May you, your people and all beings experience peace and free choice.

It is difficult when words are used as weapons to destroy your peace and wound your spirit. I have someone in my life obsessed with hurting me in any way that they can- I stay strong, but this person, and those working with them do this every day and into the night. Not even sure why they have picked me.
@LVXMagick
@LVXMagick 3 года назад
An important lesson I learned was about people using words as weapons. If someone told you the sun was purple, would you get pissed off? No! And why not? Bc you know it isn't true. Not only would you not be angry, you would probably feel sorry for the poor fool that believed it....so when people say nasty things to you, why do you get angry? Well you only get angry if there is a part of you that believes it may be true. This helped me realize I was putting validity behind things I thought I did want to believe, but on some level did. This does not excuse the behavior of others, but hurt people hurt people...anyone who tears down another life has been hurt badly and has not received the love they deserve. Being loving to them despite their hate doesn't always help them, but it helps YOU! When you know you deserve love despite your faults, you understand that others do too. Even if what they say is true, if done in a malicious way, it is not about you, but about their own mental and emotional instability. I'm sorry you are going through this. Hope you have some loving support in your life bc we all deserve that. I wish you the very best.💞

The intense irony here however is that half the world now gets so easily offended by even the slightest thing. Such a dramatic difference. I agree with what you say. Interested in how you would deal with a situation where someone in the family keeps lying & setting you up to fail & not trying to teach you; but degrade you on a daily basis for years on end? How does family deal with this if it's your own kin & the enemy is within your own circle?
@user-oc9rc7lf8n
@user-oc9rc7lf8n 3 года назад
That is something I also would like to know. Since family is a central part of the teachings I would think that they would say you have to respect them and just not allow yourself to be negatively influenced and trust that good things would come to you. Trying to distance yourself from them although practical, might go against the teachings. I can’t say for sure but when I had elder influence I never heard of how to deal with these specific scenarios and it’s all very grandiose stuff and never about plotting or getting back at someone. Sometimes a bit unrealistically goodie two shoes-ish. Best I can say is by building your character that might act as a shield from attacks. Sorry if rambling but I had a similar situation.

I think this can be helpful, provided the person providing advice is doing so from a place of love. However, many in our world are critical from a judgmental or wounded place and there is mental and emotional abuse that cannot be allowed. Telling the person who is receiving this abuse, that they just need to not take it personally, is victim shaming.

Mr. Brown, in your opinion do you find some philosophical kinship between these teachings of your people and the ancient Stoics? Both guiding principles appear very similar, but I am more familiar with the cultural context of the Greek Stoics than the Diné I'm afraid, so I may be off the mark with this question.

If / when the opportunity permits, I would like to travel to your land some day. I will be sending an email to your traditional teachings website soon as well (from Midwest Moe). We have a show now, with former guests like Dr. Cornel West and Dr. Jane Elliot. If possible; we would like to add you to our list of distinguished guests some day. We can arrange for the interview to be done from the comfort of your own home, over the internet. Nothing but respect; with no surprises or ambush journalism.
