Say as it is, Ott! I'm a native trying to speak it. I learn and I'm young so, I'll learn my Navajo words, what really brought to speaking my language cause, when I first spoke I feel pourd like a light, spark in me. Also what makes me more into our culture, is the Yei Bei Chei dancer song, that makes me loving my own culture even more.

Blessings from Mongolia. 🙏🏼 I’m a white American who wants to work with development policy but I come from a background of anthropology. I hope to find synthesis between Mongolian and US indigenous culture as not an informer but a driver of development. I hope to bring this through indigenous, policy, and anthropological methodologies (indigenous methodologies I find to be central to properly developing indigenous and non-western regions as looking at Mongolia, it is obvious that copying the US [or the USSR before] and becoming a primarily capitalist nation is killing their environment, national identity, and unique life ways). Thank you for having such an accessible space of learning. This is something that elders and academics alike need more to disseminate truth and knowledge.

It'd be interesting to link yourself or your nation's Dine wisdom keepers with my tribe's wisdom keepers. I'm half Dene from up north in the Northwest Territories of Canada 🇨🇦. According to modern mainstream archeological studies, the Navajo (Dine) peoples split off from the Northern Dene tribes around 1200 to 1000 years ago and began heading south after that, eventually settling in the area you guys are now. My Uncle Jerome speaks Dene (South Slavey) and in the late 1990s he actually went down to the four corners region where the Dine nation is currently. He said that he was walking down a street and overheard two Dine women speaking in their traditional language and he was surprised because he could actually understand most of the words they were saying even though the Dine and Dene peoples have been separated for so long. It was funny too because he said they were talking about him and must've thought he didn't understand them so they were super surprised when he replied in Dene that he knew what they were saying 😂

It is important to remember that original people coming to our country were escaping the rest of the world also. Native America is where we came for a better life. I don't have my family history details but there was some that came on the Mayflower. Native Americans are great people.

thank you for sharing this i got a question, maybe somebody can answer me in my youth, i heard an indian song that will not leave my mind- it is curious because i am in europe, i would not hear those songs anywhere one day i was given a cd, a compact disk where this song was on it was native american songs and chants, for the life of me i can not remember the correct tribe that sung it it was called "devil-song", but this translation did not fit with me however, it went something like this: "heyaana heyaana..heyaaaana heyaaaana heyana ta ye ta ho heyana ta ye ta ha heyaana heyaana .heyaaana heyaaana" if anayone can tell me any more about this, i will be very gratefull, it does not leave my mind for 30 years now i tried to find it, but i did not thank you and many blessings, your teachings help me a lot in every day-life to have more joy, happiness, confidence and peace

YOU GO AHEAD AND CHANT ALL YOU WANT. IT IS PART OF YOUR HERITAGE...there was a long time for the different Indian tribes, the u.s. government prohibited the pow wow,s and chanting here in America.. I say do the pow wow,s and chanting and war dances and whatever you want too. It is part of your heritage. I am a white man born and raised here in America. They need to do it under there rights, as free speech.. I,m for the Indian tribes here in America.. the past was the past, that's over and gone.. we all have the right to free speech and freely worship our GOD..

“The Creative is the strongest of all things in the world. The expression of its nature is invariably the easy, in order thus to master the dangerous. The Receptive is the most devoted of all things in the world. The expression of its nature is invariably simple, in order thus to master the obstructive” -iChing… Wally talks about how these songs were all they had in captivity and hardship… like the Blues and slavery. Funny enough too the blues and jazz became loved all over the world. Nazis loved it. Americans, all walks. No one could deny its truth. But they had to reconcile; “these people we deem less than human have created something we admire and can’t do ourselves.” Many denied that blues/jazz came from blacks. This talk made me think of all this. Appreciate your talks Wally.
@timmccarthy3034
@timmccarthy3034 Год назад
interesting to note also, that the earliest roots of "the Blues"....REALLY was both, the African, AND the Native American musical expression...It's where Rock n Roll comes from too......The Rolling Stones, and even the Beatles, would never have existed, without that primal early foundation to build upon....

Greetings from Ireland. I am passing these teachings on to some of my fellow Irish people. We had a culture stretching back thousands of years, with wisdom very similar to that of the Diné . Much of it has been lost because of our desire to embrace shiny toys like smartphones and American multinational corporations. You are helping many people with this wisdom.

Thank you so much Wally and Shane. This song keeps coming to me as I walk and I want to sing it. Most of my grandfatherʼs family were killed by Hitler during World 2 and only my grandfather survived. I feel a strong connection with this song and empathy for what your Diné people and other tribes suffered. The middle part often sounds different when different people sing it. There are so many layers to it. I think Radmilla Cody does a version in her CD ʼShi Keyahʼ with more verses. I have sung what I have learned of this song as I walk along the beach and pick up the plastic to make Mother Earth more beautiful as I walk.

I appreciate and know what came from the sufferings of our ancestors as a whole in the 1800s. But the history that led to the tribes demise has always been a question for me as a Navajo. My entire family's displacement began in the 1750s with the early Spanish settlers. Then, backing up further to 1580s when my ancestors coexist with the Pueblo in Mt Taylor, NM. Not many Navajo know of their family history. Thanks to the Catholic Fransican priests who documented their travels in NM, now archived in Mexico City's Catholic library.
