Very nice indeed… and than again, it’s by Native Instruments; so waiting and trusting them on releasing software fixes and improvements can be tricky bet lately. The way how they treat their customers with Maschine+ is simply rude. And, it’s not the only advanced piece of hardware that suffers from bad support and a lack of updates. So for me NI has to shine on other parts first before I buy their new hardware.

One issue I have with NI, on top of the glacial pace of software development, is the fact that they tend to break things in updates and never get around to fixing them. The button lighting hasn't worked properly on my KK S49 mk1 since one of the Komplete Kontrol updates a few years ago. I filed an extensive bug report immediately after the release; they said they were working on it, but never fixed any of it. My confidence that they still have competent software engineers is really shaken, and the half-baked software support for this new keyboard seems like more of the same.
@maikvanrossum
@maikvanrossum 10 месяцев назад
@@st0rmchild maybe the change of architecture also made them change the required development skills… humm… this could be wishful thinking…? My experience with the development of the Maschine Plus software is exactly the same. Last year they introduced a start-up bug, which took them almost two months to fix. No rollback option, nothing… just wait for the fix… which also was the last update we’ve seen for this device. I really hope the promised 1.5 update will eventually be released and stabilizes the M+ in its current capabilities.

@@st0rmchild I'm a software dev, this kind of thing has absolutely nothing to do with software dev competence. Less than zero actually. I find it bizarre that people think that software devs get to prioritize whatever feature they like, as if they never have dumb management people setting priorities often incorrectly that they are forced to listen to. I can almost guarantee that the button lighting issue you have went something like this: Manager: "we need this thing to do X,Y and Z to impress A and B, by monday. Get on it!" Devs: "That can't be done without risking a bunch of existing functionality, and possibly adding bugs, we can't test it that fast!" Manager: "DO YOU NOT HEAR ME? If you don't get it done, you get no Christmas bonuses this year!" Devs most of the time care about 'their baby', managers don't. Devs know their project very well most of the time, managers barely even know in general terms what it does. Above all: managers make bad decisions often, devs almost always know better.

Finally NI keyboards are also useful in a DAW and not just in their own ecosystem. This is a good sign they finally are moving in the right direction. Curious to see how it will work with other 3rd party plugins and DAWs, and as center master keyboard for a synth setup; as I suspect that as stand alone is still very limited compared to other competitors like arturia for example.
@BoBeats
@BoBeats 10 месяцев назад
Well, what an refreshingly positive take! While I think its frustrating that they ditched Maschine support I do agree that the future support for other DAW is looking very positive! For a synth setup I am not sure I would recommend it tho. For that SL mk3, Keystep Pro etc is the way.
@fcf8269
@fcf8269 10 месяцев назад
@@BoBeats Yeah, there are pros and cons of course... I honestly walked away from NI S series because it is heavily specialized in their ecosystem, and I need something that works with a lot of different hardware and software, so the current gen of S keyboards won't do... But this one for the first time seems as appealing as the SL MK3 or the Arturia counterparts... My ideal keyboard would be a fully programmable and configurable one, but clearly they want you to be tied to their ecosystem, so I get their point of view too. Maybe if their software is flexible enough, it may give the SL a run for its money? I still expect the price range to be about 600 dollars for the 61 keys or so; so won't be cheap for sure. Also you mention no Maschine support? So it won't work at all with it? That is disappointing :(
@BoBeats
@BoBeats 10 месяцев назад
Maschine has support for Kontrol and Kontakt I believe, but lacks the deep support of previous gen keyboards. Its not designed with that integration in mind, clearly, because it lacks certain buttons for Maschine integration. Its a shame. How any future integration will look we have to wait and see, as we could still get some M integration. At least i am hoping for it.
@ChristopheTornieri
@ChristopheTornieri 10 месяцев назад
I don’t trust NI anymore for future updates. They never improved Ableton Live integration on the MK2 and they had plenty of room to do that. They broke NKS 3rd party support on the MK2 months ago and it is still broken. I can load 3rd party plugins but none of the parameter controls work. Opened a ticket. NI replied to me that they were able to reproduce the problem but so far no fix… Groups of parameters (or better use of the screens in general) has been asked for several years. Still not there on the MK2. Will they brought that back to the MK2 when it is available for the MK3? I hope so but I am pretty sure they won’t. I still like my MK2 but compared to other companies (like Ableton for instance), updates are really slow to come out and usually really disappointed.

Looks like a beautiful midi controller/keyboard. Kudos to you for actually demostrating it while playing and writing music. Most videos are just showing features with little to zero music demos. Music is everything. So, again, appeciate your efforts most. Personally, I play guitar but want to create my own music. That means drum tracks, bass tracks, and the endless possibilties using a midi keyboard.... yet, I really want to remain focused on guitar. So, after endless hours (still ongoing), I think I need software/plugins like Easy Drummer to lay down drum tracks. Similarly, Easy Bass. Really like how Easy Drummer can take my guitar track and create (quite well) a drum track that fits. Its also fun to use its song feature, and auto-create all the drums for a song, then write music (guitar tracks) to fit. I also found that once I have midi drum tracks, swapping in Superior Drummer results in much more professional sounding drums. So, its never simple is it? Now you might get... I need a midi keyboard to "possibly" make my own drum or bass lines, but, for me, its way more often I just want to add keyboard, synth, or what you normally expect of a keyboard. I'm getting a feeling this midi keyboard is focused on the keyboard player/songwriter who wants to do it all from their keyboard. Not a guitarist like me. Nothing wrong with that. NOTE: I have touchscreens for my DAW. So, I don't need much DAW control in the keyboard... a few features are great, but I don't need to mix from the keyboard. What I really want is at least 61 keys and great touch sensitivity, and quality, and integration with a DAW... but mostly so all the keys match all the plugins for the sound you want. I do like the lighted keys that help with what you are doing though. Love your review, it was great. So far (not done looking), I an leaning towards Arturia KeyLab 61 MkII Professional. It has features I don't think I need, but overall leans more towards what I do need. Still reviewing, so who knows and I still have to go try them in person... and my opinion... always... radically... changes with hands on experience.

Poly aftertouch, great! I realy miss this 90s technology on the "modern keyboards". If NI did it in 88 notes with light/synth action keyboard at a fair price it could have been my new controler if it had a set of 3 or 4 faders on the left hand. But no. Pity. Actualy I don't care about the nice screen and the komplete control integration, I never use that and I definitely don't care seing few tracks as my DAW which is just in front of me on a larger screen.

I understand the frustration folks have regarding this keyboard, and I agree with a good bit of them. That said, my mk2 is acting up. Gotta see what sweetwater is going to do, but I’m actually hoping to trade up to the mk3. I personally don’t need maschine integration or pads on it. Won’t be using poly aftertouch either. I’m just a big fan and user of ni plugins and expansions. I just need the keyboard to control my daws, levels, panning, mute, solo, etc. Not gonna worry myself with what ni may add to this, I’ll just use it for what it is and what I like. Earlier on, I thought I would bypass this keyboard and wait to see their next one. As of now I’ll be getting one even if I can’t trade up from my mk2 simply because I feel it’ll work well for me and be enjoyable to use. 🎹♥️

We’ve been promised firmware updates for years for ours to integrate with Kontakt (with lightguide) and arp/chords outside Komplete Kontrol, but nothing. They didn't introduce vector widget like you have in Push, all you got is the same old 8 knobs, there's no rich interface like an ADSR with touch screen, matrix, oscilloscope, spectrum analyzer... The ONLY thing you get is a display for the 8 knobs value, like the old model, and a splash pretty graphic that has zero function. Even worse they removed all support for Maschine! And it's not a matter of a firmware update, they actually didn't put the buttons to control Maschine.

This whole Komplete Kontrol MK3 fiasco is an excellent opportunity to see which RU-vidrs make honest reviews and which are only doing sponsored reviews to make money. Like this one for example. No word about the complete drop of support for Maschine. It's not even supported as a DAW mode. No mention about scale mode that doesn't work standalone or doesn't work at all in Kontakt. 90% of the users online are disappointed. But yet this video is just like an ad by Native Instruments.

No money A nfr keyboard (meaning it has no street value) No input from Ni on my vid And… its a first impressions vid. Not an in depth review. Had a few days with it and I focused on how it works with Cubase. Which I was surprised work pretty well! As I said at the end: my thoughts are that most should just wait and see if it develops into a tool that will work for you. As for Maschine support ive already sent my thoughts to NI on that and brought it up with them personally.
@youtubevideos415
@youtubevideos415 10 месяцев назад
@@BoBeats OK, but dropping support for Maschine is a huge huge factor that will upset probably anybody, as this was one of the main reasons to get this controller for everybody who has invested in the NI infrastructure. There is no excuse not mentioning this, as people will spend their money and then getting shocked that they lost functionality, they had with earlier versions. And this is not something they can fix with software updates, as they have removed the buttons. I'm really really sad to see that Loopop is the only honest person on RU-vid who has even mentioned this.
@BoBeats

I think Jeff Gibbons brought it up too? I had my hands full is what I am saying and do you honestly think someone will watch my vid and expect it to work with Maschine? ”Bo showed it working with Cubase so ofc it will work with Maschine”. Its a vid where I showcase basic functionality and how it works with another daw. Thats the focus. And conversly: did other youtubers bring up the Cubase functionality? I assume not. Just so im clear: im very bothered by the lack of Maschine support. I kinda wish I had included a critique of that but hindsight is always 20/20. I hope I can sway NI to make some sort of software integration possible. Not holding my breath tho

@@mjrisinsd6836Yeah, if you watch these MK3 reviews on RU-vid, you see a pattern. 99% of those RU-vidrs are sellouts. They make videos how cool this is, but don't bring up any cons. Like Dylan Paris for example. In the past he used to call out Native Instruments for their bullshit with Maschine+. That's why i liked him. Now he's also seemingly on their payroll and he said this controller would be "next level" and "has no cons". Not even mentioning the removal of Maschine support. They are all sellouts and the fact that they all don't mention the removal of Maschine support shows, that their reviews are scripted and Native Instruments controls what they are allowed to say and what not.
@youtubevideos415
@youtubevideos415 10 месяцев назад
@@BoBeatsSo are you planing a follow up video on this issue? Because we see a pattern here, many other RU-vidrs also don't said anything about Maschine support missing, although we know they are heavy Maschine users themselves. We have the impression that your video was scripted and Native Instruments controlled what you are allowed to say and what not. So if you don't make a follow up video about this, you will come off like a sellout.

This seems like a second smaller monitor attached to a controller and set of poly keys. If this was a synth and standalone, it would be interesting and applicable for more use cases. Maybe my DAW-AS-LESS-AS-POSSIBLE philosophy is blind me from the value of a really fancy controller.

@youtubevideos415 10 месяцев назад
Dawless with Native Instruments? What are you smoking? You cannot even use the scales of chords without having a Komplete Kontrol plugin on the track you are playing. If you move to another track in your DAW with a lugin from another vendor or a stock plugin of the DAW you instantly loose almost all these features of this keyboard. It's basically just a controller for their own plugins. Nothing more. If you wanna go dawless, then you. need Akai MPC Keys. Or buy a Fantom 0 synth, that has also fabulous DAW control mode. Much better than this Native Instruments crap that doesn't even control send levels. Fantom let's you control plugins and by plugins i mean all plugins not just their own.

It can show anything that has the NKS label. NI is working to have more developers adopt this standard, but you cant assume anything works unless it explicitly say so. You can also use it as a generic midi controller and map knobs to cc values and that way control whatever software you want. But you should buy it because of the daw integration + integration with NKS plugins.

We need to stop giving medals to instrument makers for putting a half decent screen on devices in 2023, screens have been cheap for over 10 years, even £50 Android tablets have capacitive touch screens that are over 720p, and again, just 8 knobs? every half assed controller has 8 knobs, in what universe is 8 knobs enough to control modern software? and we eat this shit up again and again, and get ripped off in the process.

no longer supporting the machine software is tantamount to capitulation... I have no idea according to which criteria NI develops - obviously not according to the wishes of the users. Nothing of what is presented here, I need. In the end, it just boils down to the fact that at some point Komplete Software will no longer be developed for the MK2 and then you will be forced to switch to the MK3 to benefit from it. Just the integration with Maschine has resulted in a very easy to use DAW, if only the shortcomings known for years had been fixed. For instance it's almost laughable to think that the Maschine software still doesn't understand aftertouch. How could anyone forget something like that?
@ChristopheTornieri
@ChristopheTornieri 10 месяцев назад
Doe not add anything apart from the poly aftertouch. Everything else is purely software update on the pc or Mac side. Still nothing running on the keyboard itself. Support for direct access to Kontakt could have been done on mk2 several years ago. So I’ll keep my MK2! And why did they abandon the Maschine integration??? This was one of the nicest features on the mk2. Seriously, I don’t understand how much bad decisions have been made for this new product. A big disappointment from NI.

Sadly, there is no Korg Workstation with Poly Aftertouch. If you mean Keystage...there are no sliders, too. It is smaller in depth than the NI kbd, and the 61 keys model is 150 € cheaper (still, 700 € for a simple master kbd is a bit much). It actually seems more versatile for dawless usage than the NI device, but also has the tiny tiny Korg display we know from Wavestate et cie, plus a small display per knob (only 8 knobs...). I probably will buy it for those Synths - hopefully it arrives in stores this year. NI kbd is already available here in EU.

Important for blind musicians. DO NOT BUY THE MK3 THERE IS NO ACCESSIBILITY. I have been waiting many years for a manufacturer of midi and hardware keyboards to implement accessibility for vision impaired and blind musicians. After listening to this vid I started saveing and 8 months later I finally got the money together and purchased the MK3 that came out during this time. However the MK3 has no accessibility implemented that left me floored as the only thing the MK3 offers me over my RP500 is a better feeling keybed. I have messaged Native instruments twice and still no reply, this adds to my very expensive frustration in Australia this is a $1300.00 frustration for the MK3 S61. I have been in contact with the music store that I purchased this from and they have contacted the suppliers and still nothing. The MK3 has been out for 6 months now, Where is the accessibility functionality for the MK3? This is the first time a product has had accessibility implemented in older versions and the latest and greatest has nothing to work with, this would be like Apple not including Siri in it's devices. The other frustrating thing is while waiting for the keyboard to be delivered I had purchased the spotlight Ireland software instrument so more money down the drain so far. Not happy Jan

That's what every keyboard player expects from their main keyboard pretty much. It has to feel like a traditional piano keyboard. PolyAT is as far as it goes. Linnstrument is an innovation, but you need to re-learn everything. Osmose is a more conservative innovation, but you still need to re-learn the finger movements, to a degree.
