The first video in our latest series: Native Plant Showcase
Today we'll look at the mean and obnoxious, but also healthy and oddly delicious, Oregon Grape! This plant may not be great for most landscapes, but it does have so many benefits if you can spare the space for it!

Have three plants in the east Texas lots of oaks and shade, they produce their berries in late winter and very early spring Love the video

That's interesting that yours produce in winter and spring. A difference in climate or is yours a different species I wonder? Our fruit comes in fall and is moldy and gone by winter.

Do you guys know if it would be detrimental to the plant (or illogical considering those dang roots) to put a sort of edging/root blocking system of some sort to block those sprawling surface roots and keep the suckers down? I'm thinking like the black plastic garden edging wrapped around the plant a couple feet out or something. Thanks for the post, love the native showcases!

I'd go with illogical, purely because the edgings that are currently on the market are not deep enough to be effective against these runner roots. The shallow ones are usually a foot deep or more. I am working on a design for a more effective edging, but I lack the knowledge and time to get the patents I need to move forward with the idea :(

I have not, but that sounds fabulous! I'll have to ask Jessica if she has. Neither of us are big drinkers but I like trying sips of a good wine now and then.

The only difference was, it was a tree (big one) for us when I was a kid. So I think this can grow into a tree. The bark was yellow

There are several species of Oregon Grape from low growing creeping varieties to tall bushes and yes, I think some could absolutely be pruned into tree forms! There may even be some that grow into tree forms on their own.

If we mow the lawn regularly u think will avoid roots ?

I'm not sure what you mean by avoid roots. Do you mean, will mowing stop the suckers from growing? No, the roots will still send up suckers, they just wont get tall. They'll stay short, with pokey leaves on short pokey sticks. I dig them out when I can.
