Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Finland and Sweden have applied to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO. Originally created during the Cold War and envisioned as a collective security mechanism to counter a potential Soviet invasion of Western Europe, NATO appears to have a new lease on life. But what can the security dilemma tell us about NATO expansion? And what do balancing, bandwagoning, and buck passing have to do with NATO? Find out in this IR Explainer!

Please elaborate on the concept of bandwagoning and how it differs from joining an alliance. Also, please do a video on "strategic realism" and its difference from neorealism. Thanks!

Thanks for the question. Joining an alliance can be bandwagoning or balancing, depending on the alliance structure and membership. The action of joining an alliance is enacting bandwagoning (or balancing). Thanks also for the suggestion for a future video. I'll see what I can do!

Hi Noah, where does hedging fit in the concept of Balancing, Bandwagoning
@NoahZerbe

Great question! The easiest way to think about it is that hedging falls between bandwagoning and balancing. When hedging, countries seek to retain flexibility and avoid excessive alliance with a stronger state (bandwagoning) while also avoiding potential tensions or conflicts that might arising from balancing.

The main question for NATO is this. Do they have the money to expand their military and to buy equipment (are their economics in good shape)? And are their military sizeable and are young men willing to join? The answer is no to both.

A couple of points. You say 'Russian aggression'? Russia agreed for the Minsk agreements to be implemented and who didn't? Isnt it really those anti Russian forces that showed the aggression in the first place? Then continued to arm Ukraine, punish civilians in eastern Ukraine and expected Russia to just watch? Well they did for many years until Kiev pushed it too far. As Ukraine is a proxy then the US/NATO is actually the aggressor! Seymour Hersh says the US blew up Nord pipelines so who is the aggressor? Many years ago Ron Paul raised some issues about Bruce Jackson from Lockheed being behind the Committee to expand NATO back in the 1990s. There is an unholy alliance between Military Industrial Complex and foreign policy that a thinking person would like to examine as a prime mover. Remember Eisenhower's warning anyone??? Look at the current US military budget? Who is making money in this war? US selling expensive gas to EU, US selling weapons to new NATO devotees. How convenient to be the only one making money. but I'll leave all that for thinking people to examine more closely.

Professor noah zerbey do you think sanction on russia by usa would push russia towards china and forced them to work together on military technology and space technology that would challenge usa hegemony? china is building 20 warship every year and by 2030 china will have at least 450 warships including many LHD and Super aircraftcarrier and submarines and H 20 stealth bomber rivaling us b 21. Do you think these chinese weapons are headache for usa in western pacific and south china sea?

China and Russia have definately moved closer post-Ukraine, and China's growth is certainly a challenge for the US in the Pacific Rim. I think there's no doubt that China has risen to a peer-equivalent to the US, and I suspect that the US-China rivalry will be the premier international challenge for the US into the future.
