In a recent development, Finland has chosen Rafael Advanced Defense Systems to provide an air-defense system for 346 million to fill a gap in NATO's newest member's weaponry. Finland has a 800-mile border with Russia and lacks high-altitude interception capability.
According to Antti Kaikkonen, Finland's defense ministry, the country has decided to purchase anti-aircraft equipment from one of two Israeli companies, Israel Aerospace Industries or Rafael Advanced Systems. This decision was made after the country had invited bids from five companies, including firms from Germany, Norway, and the UK as well as the two Israeli companies, back in October 2020. In the final phase of the selection process, the options were narrowed down to Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd and Rafael. IAI proposed its BARAK-MX system with LRAD ER missile and ELTA radar, while Rafael offered David’s Sling system with STUNNER missile and ELTA radar. In the end, Finland selected Rafael's offer to enhance its air defense capabilities.
