Sorry to be blunt, but that it pointless. The whole purpose of a NATO strap is to save the watch when one spring bar breaks. This strap doesn’t do that, so you may as well wear a two-piece fabric strap.
@Ipeacocks
@Ipeacocks 2 месяца назад
But one piece strap can solve the problem with losing one springbar. Doesn't it?
@roadgent7921
@roadgent7921 2 месяца назад
Nato design singularly was to prevent the entire watch slipping off through loose fixed bar lugs that were common back in the day. That's the only reason for the extra strap and loop. There's a documentary about it.
@peoplez129
@peoplez129 Месяц назад
@@Ipeacocks Nope. You need that pass through the bottom, otherwise any strap design would still require two spring bars to keep the watch on your wrist. With a normal NATO, the strap goes all the way around your wrist, and would stay on whether you had a watch attached to it or not, which is how 1 spring bar is enough to save the watch. The one in this video is basically turning a NATO strap into the same behavior as a normal two piece strap without being two pieces. Granted I don't think people have to worry much about spring bars coming loose, but all it takes is one time. Another benefit of the NATO is that the pressure amount and direction on the spring bar is pretty constant, which also means it's less likely to have wear and tear that can cause a spring to come loose. With a 2 piece strap, the strap uses the spring bar like a rotating hinge. With a NATO, the strap is generally just resting on the spring bar and putting some downward pressure. NATO's also don't just have one layer, but two, one above the spring bar that passes through and above the other spring bar, and one below that which passes under the spring bar. This is why if one spring bar comes off, the other one is still held.

I just got my honey Dijon nylon in the mail and I LOVE it! I’m using it on my white dial Hamilton Khaki Field Expedition. It’s a perfect match. The mustard strap matches the faux lume on the hands. I had completely given up on NATO straps even though I love the look. Even a single pass feels weird on my wrist. I don’t care that the zero pass loses the feature of staying put if you break a spring bar. I don’t worry about that with my other 20 rubber, leather, and metal straps. In 50 years of wearing watches I’ve never had a spring bar fail. So why would I worry about it with this one? Max, you’ve created a total hit. Way to go!!!

@@WatchCrunchOfficial honestly, I got about half way through before clicking away because IMHO it was all a little ridiculous. I did see that it was mentioned, but I’d already written the comment and still believe it stands. You can buy a regular watch strap made of nylon for a nato appearance if you don’t want the underpass. The whole thing smacks of solving a problem that doesn’t exist, or if you want to put it another way, solving a problem that’s already been solved but doing it in an alternative and inferior way. No matter how you slice it, I wouldn’t consider the new thing to be superior in any way to any of the alternative old things. And it eliminates the primary advantage of the old solution. No matter how I look at it, the new thing doesn’t have a purpose, IMO. And it specifically eliminates a purpose of the old thing. But hey, the world is full of all kinds. If you can sell something to them, what do I care? I’m not buying it. 🤷

On the face of it, it's a, cool idea but when I think about it, it doesn't really make sense. We use NATO style straps in particularly rough environments and have to put up with the wierd loop and keeper at the side of the wrist as a, trade off for keeping the watch on your wrist if you lose a spring bar. There's no real point in having that awkward looking piece if you're not going to have the protection. It's better to buy a good standard canvas or nylon strap as it just looks better. Or, cut off the double pass bit or use an original single pass while still having the safety with a bit less bulk under the watch. A good quality single pass or a cut away NATO will not feel flimsy at all. What we have here is a strap that's not very esthetic but it doesn't provide the safety. It's basically an ugly looking strap with no real benefit with unnecessary bulk on your wrist for no good reason.

Criticism of the NATO strap is totally unjustified. Cutting the extra strap defeats the purpose of keeping the watch away from the wrist to allow ventilation and lessen sweating. Also the watch can be stowed by reverse looping and it provides substantial cover for the front and back of the watch when kept with other items in the bag or pocket. It's the ultimate utilitarian strap.
@cnaarndt

Sorry, but all you did is to defeat the purpose of a NATO or Zulu strap. Now if a spring bar breaks, the watch falls off your wrist. Recommend a Zulu strap for one layer below the watch OR the alternate method of attaching a standard NATO that again is only one layer below the watch which also has the added benefit of now moving the strap to the bottom of the wrist versus on the outside, which is just plain annoying.

It eliminates the safety advantages of a NATO but is still bulky, only flipped the double layer UNDER your wrist. I would prefer an innovative flat strap under my wrist when working in the office. Most of my NATOs wear good and fill the space under the lugs, so the watches sit very well (better than with single layer straps). I think I recall a similar strap technique (with leather) at a 1940s vintage watch I got offered in Switzerland about 25 years ago. Interesting you had the same idea now. Personally the reason I like a NATO is because of the functionality and security. I do a lot of camping and bang my watch around. And IMHO the Achilles Heel of a watch is the spring bar. If that breaks you're screwed. I lost a nice watch that I really liked do to that very reason. I like the NATO's security. (I've also stopped wearing an expensive specialty 'field watch' watch for that very reason. Timex Expedition Indiglo for me now when camping). Your single pass is interesting and probably worth trying so I will take a look at it. And your honesty about the potential drawback of the zero pass is much appreciated. But, if you have a thin enough traditional NATO woven nylon strap the double pass under the case back should not be an issue, eh? However, innovation is always a good thing and I applaud you for your ingenuity. I wish you much success.

I have never owned a NATO strap. I think this defeats the purpose personally. But having tried neither how can I know?

Nice one Max, this is a great option for those watches on the thicker side who love the versatility of a NATO. Well done, I hope the sales go well. I'm certainly interested.

You can just buy a 2 piece “nato” it’s clear to look at that it’s not an actual nato and you lose all the benefits. So may as well just go with a 2 piece as all this is doing is simulating a 2-piece
@parkerjk11
@parkerjk11 10 месяцев назад
Fun idea! It looks like you took the single pass NATO strap and widened the inner loop to allow the hand to pass through. The tradeoff from a practicality standpoint is reasonable (just look at any standard watch strap and if a spring bar breaks the watch will fall), but I think the fact that you have to slide your hand through before tightening (as opposed to just slapping it on your wrist) makes this more of a difficult sell (Apple does this with their elastic bands, but now there is the added complexity of tightening it down). Could you have achieved a similar aesthetic result (and I guess conventional result if we're considering the weight distribution) with a conventional 2-piece fabric strap by just doubling the layers?
@kbeightyseven1783

It has the downsides of both the nato and a normal strap! I'm not sure I see the point in this
@WatchCrunchOfficial
@WatchCrunchOfficial 10 месяцев назад
We wanted to keep it to one piece and retain the nato aesthetic. There are more additions than just lengthening the strap if you look closer ;)
@edmedm7993
@edmedm7993 3 месяца назад
This is a "solution" to a problem that doesn't exist. The NATO strap serves a specific purpose, and what you invented only mimics the look of the NATO without offering its benefits. In that case, I'd rather use the original bracelet of the watch, which is more visually appealing.
