NATO SUMMIT: Results in the shadow of Putin and Trump! "Many are still afraid of this!"
At their summit in Washington, the NATO heads of state and government agreed on a further military aid package for Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his satisfaction, but urged further concessions. Moscow sharply criticized some of the announcements.
Although Ukraine did not receive an invitation to join NATO, the allies emphasized that Ukraine was now on an "irreversible path towards full Euro-Atlantic integration". The heads of state and government promised Ukraine military aid of at least 40 billion euros within the next year. Germany has already pledged eight billion euros.
The USA announced the delivery of a further Patriot air defense system, giving Kiev a total of five new systems. The NATO partners are also beginning the delivery of F-16 fighter jets, which Ukraine is due to receive in the summer. Zelensky urged quick deliveries and demanded a free hand in the use of the weapons.
NATO also decided on measures to secure aid to Ukraine in the event of Donald Trump's election victory. A new headquarters in Wiesbaden is to coordinate the delivery of weapons and the training of Ukrainian soldiers. NATO also expressed concern about China's relationship with Russia and called China a "decisive enabler" in the Russian war of aggression.
On the fringes of the summit, the USA announced that it would be stationing long-range weapons in Germany again from 2026, including Tomahawk cruise missiles and newly developed hypersonic weapons. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz defended this decision as a deterrent to Russia.
