NATO SUMMIT: Tomahawks in Germany "sabre-rattling from Moscow" Kremlin threatens military response
Russia has criticized the planned stationing of long-range US weapons in Germany as a return to the Cold War. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declared on Russian state television that the world was well on the way to a new Cold War. Peskov accused Germany, the USA, France and Great Britain of being directly involved in the conflict over Ukraine and emphasized that all the characteristics of the Cold War, such as confrontation and direct conflict, would return.
Peskov emphasized that these measures were being taken to strategically weaken Russia and guarantee defeat on the battlefield. He called for Russia's rich potential to be used to achieve the goals of the special military operation in Ukraine. One of the aims of this operation is to prevent Ukraine from becoming a member of NATO.
On the fringes of the NATO summit, the White House and the German government announced that from 2026, for the first time since the Cold War, US weapons systems are to be stationed in Germany that reach as far as Russia. The plan is to station Tomahawk cruise missiles with a range of over 2,000 kilometers, SM-6 anti-aircraft missiles and new supersonic weapons. These measures are intended to improve the protection of NATO allies in Europe.
Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev reacted to the announcement at the NATO summit that Ukraine's path to NATO was irreversible with the provocative statement that in this case both Ukraine and NATO would have to disappear. Medvedev, who is deputy head of the Russian National Security Council, has been trying for years to make a name for himself as a hardliner with particularly harsh statements.
