www.silberstudios.tv Who better to get natural lighting tips from than a three-time Travel Photographer of the Year award-winner? We're at the studio of photographer Bob Holmes for today's Marc Silber Show - Advancing Your Photography! He shares some techniques you can use to work with natural light and take better photos, no matter where your travels may take you.
Bob has been all over the world and his travel photos have appeared in National Geographic, Departures, and 46 books as the sole photographer. Working outdoors on most of his trips, Holmes is an expert at using natural lighting in photos. He loves looking at natural light, and his unique tip is that you need to picture light the way your camera sees it, rather than the way you see it. And the key to learning how to use natural lighting is to practice -- you can't become a great photographer in a week, but you will get there by shooting as much as you can.

What I love from Bob's picture is that it stand out from others is his art is beautiful either coloured or black and white, and all will still feel the same even it turned into one another.

As a trained illustrator, which (during my degree training) had a large emphasis on drawing from life, looking at form, shape and light was always very important, something that is standing me in very good stead as pick up a camera seriously for the first time! great show, many thanks :)

Bob Holmes is one of my favorite photographers. His quality of his work is consistently high. The images he produces makes you think he has somehow captured the essence or sole from what is in front of him, and always seems to have the perfect shot lined up right in front of his lens. Stunning images. Wish i could get even close.

Excellent video content! Forgive me for chiming in, I would love your thoughts. Have you heard about - Zetanniay Visionary Preset (should be on google have a look)? It is a smashing one of a kind guide for creating stunning photos in minutes without the headache. Ive heard some awesome things about it and my cooworker at last got excellent results with it.

There you go: a brilliant photographer. Earned his degrees and all that. Making absolutely stunning artwork and then says: practice! Of all the videos I see on YT, there are 99.9% discarding that fact. While it is as true as simple that without practice, you don't gain experience, a lot of people these days think the camera makes the picture, Bob (Mister Holmes) points it out. It gives you confidence and that is translated into the photos. Thanks on separating the chaff from the corn. Love.

I've been studying the workings of photography for a few months now, and just started getting some basic gear together early last month. I love working with natural light. I've used my built in flash occasionally, but I'm focusing more on getting the best shot in cam to minimize post processing. Videos like this are inspirational. Thank you.

Once again a great interview!! One tip I can give you, is to adjust your settings as light changes around you *before* you shoot. So let's say you're moving from point A to point B, you adjust your settings looking at the light changing around you before you arrive at the location. This tip I got from a wildlife photographer, a very old man, who used only a film camera (I believe a Leica, but who cares), a 50 and a 75mm lens - yes, for wildlife. He knew everything about the forest that he shot in, down in Compiègne, France. He always worked in that same forest. He knew exactly when and where the animals where going to show up, how to approach them etc He would always adjust his settings constantly so that when the animal came it was always right. One of the greatest photographers ever. I wish I remembered his name, but I was little - my dad probably would know it... anyway... There you have the secret. ;)

Auto ISO is your best friend. It'll keep it as low as possible, and you just set your upper limit. Mine is at 16OO max on a D7100, so I know I won't shoot higher than 1600, and if it's bright enough, I'll get 100.
