I hate it when people say if it's natural, it's good for you. Poison berries are natural, does that means it's good to eat? Of course not! Rocks are natural, yet we don't see people munching on rocks for obvious reasons. Saying it's natural should not be the sole reason for consuming something.
@ShoroukA
@ShoroukA 9 лет назад
TheNerdWizard Well it's because everyone knows which natural "foods" are edible & which ones aren't! :/
@TheNerdWizard
@TheNerdWizard 9 лет назад
Shorouk al-ma Exactly, but that doesn't change the fact that people give flawed reasoning for eating or not eating something. Saying cause it's natural means nothing without further reasons like it's healthy or it's good for you. Natural does does not automatically mean it's healthy. What is important is what the item being consuming dose to the body.

Some natural flavors are ridiculously expensive and resource-intensive. For example, real vanilla beans. It's far more efficient to produce the same substance (vanillin) naturally from sawdust. This is cheaper & easier on the environment, and the final product tastes just as good. And no beavers are harmed in the process.

Just remember that some of the chemicals that make up these artificial flavors, while they are synthesizing the natural flavor could be potentially toxic and concentrated form. Take for example, the chemicals that make up the artificial popcorn butter flavoring scene in movie theaters. That stuff in concentrated form has been known to be very abrasive on the lungs, causing fibroid tissue to form in them. Oil of wintergreen in pure form is highly toxic, because when it is metabolized by the body, it forms chemicals that are akin to aspirin. And everyone knows that an aspirin overdose causes thinning of the blood. In natural form, these chemicals are much less concentrated. Speaking of which, I wonder where they get the chemicals to synthesize chocolate flavor?

Almond flavor from apricot pits isn't all that weird. Both the almond fruit and the apricot are drupes (fruit with a single seed surrounded by a bony pit) They are more closely related than you might think. It would be like getting pear flavoring from apples, or lemon flavoring from limes. Also banana flavoring doesn't taste like bananas, because the bananas we eat today aren't the same bananas that people ate when banana flavoring was first being produced. Those bananas went extinct, but there's not really a reason to change an artificial flavor.

I see "natural flavors" as a cost cutting measure. If a product doesn't take like it is supposed to without the addition of said ingredients, then there is definitely something the company is doing wrong. I feel like there also has to be some incentive to add them. Perhaps it over stimulates the taste buds, making the food more addicting or it makes one product taste better over another product that doesn't use them.
@SteinGauslaaStrindhaug
@SteinGauslaaStrindhaug 9 лет назад
"Natural" may also contain proteins from the source; such as carmine (crimson lake, cochineal, natural red 4, C.I. 75470,or E120) can contain proteins from the insect it's made from, causing allergies. My wife is allergic to carmine, so "natural" insect based colors are really annoying...

I would say that most flavours used in food are perfectly fine but artificial and natural colours are a different matter. Artificial flavours are usually derived from esters or aldehydes which are chemically similar or identical to the natural ones. Artificial colours are often chemically quite different to natural colours so watch out for things like Sunset Yellow; artificial colours can be derived from coal!

She forgot to mention that natural organic compounds tend to be quite different in composition from their artificial counterparts. It will have the same atoms but in completely different order. High order organic systems like humans and animals are made to process organic compounds of a particular configuration. Low order organic systems like plants and mushrooms can process earth into those organic compounds for us. Many times our bodies do not know how to process the artificial configuration. Most artificial compounds go unprocessed by the body. In many cases the artificial compound has a higher toxicity because of this. So they do no good and can do bad sometimes. We cannot eat dirt or purely man made chemicals effectively, because they have not been processed by plants recently. So personally I prefer to eat real natural food. But yeah there are bad natural things to, I don't eat them. To say their is no difference between an artificial chemical and a natural chemical is incorrect.

Believe it of not, banana candies actually do taste like bananas. They just don't taste like the bananas we eat now. Up until the late 1960s the most common and popular banana variety was the Gros Michel (a.k.a. Big Mike), but the Gros Michel was almost entirely wiped out by a fungus it had no immunity to, and had to be replaced by another variety, the Cavendish, which is the banana seen on store shelves now. The flavour of banana candies is based on the Gros Michel, not the Cavendish, hence the difference in flavour.

The problem here is that almost everyone failed, cheated, or forgot what they learned in chemistry class. If they took chemistry that is. The few people who pass and like it, well they are ones who makes this stuff. How many people have you met with a chemistry degree, compared to a english degree or business degree? aku ski sugar alternatives, and hfcs. and people are going to say that hfcs is just 55% fructose 45% glucose, pretty much the same as table sugar made of 100% sucrose (I think sucrose) which is 50-50%, to which I reply with chemistry does weird things, try playing around with some sodium or some chlorine, separately they at very different than together. It is my opinion that the additional bond in table sugar likely effects a different biological pathway
@GuyWithAnAmazingHat

Leonard Greenpaw And those 'weird things' have been thoroughly tested by scientists before they are even released into the market. And even so people still distrust those results because of their own lack of knowledge, resulting in retesting and wasting more money, driving up food prices.

Are GMO's good , produce more for less efforts ? Think about the GMO cotton in India. Stop the advertising, Stick to the FACTS : In the West of India, the State of Maharashtra forbade Mahyco, the Indian subsidiary of the giant Monsanto, to sell the seeds of its GMO cotton. This decision is a lapel for the American multinational and could have important consequences in India. Here, more than 90 % of cotton plants resorts to the GMO seeds. Graver, Minister for Agriculture raised a link between the suicides of ruined farmers and the use of genetically modified seeds If the seeds of Monsanto-Mahyco allowed the first years to increase the efficiencies, the parasites quickly developed resistances. Especially, the small Indian cotton plants were not prepared for the GMO transition: 80 % of the fields of Maharashtra are affected by the drought while the GMO cotton requires complex systems of irrigation. If the result is such a disaster in India for the cotton, imagine what it can be for foodstuffs.

There's a study that suggests the brain can immediately tell the difference between sucrose and its substitute from their presence in the mouth (Frank, Oberndorfer, Simmons, Paulus, Fudge, Yang, & Kaye, 2008). I wonder how that fits in with this. Of course, if the "artificial" compound is identical to the "natural" one I suppose there wouldn't be a difference in the body's reaction. And even if there are differences, it may not be as pronounced as in the study mentioned above because sucrose has a direct impact on dopaminergic pathways while others may not. Still would be an interesting research avenue. P.S. I'm not an advocate for either side. I don't care about the differences or even about what's healthy and what's not as long as it tastes decent and I can afford it.

EHhh.... it's mostly a marketing ploy; especially since fermentation is left off of the list of 'natural' flavors. That said, chirality can and does matter. Look at Carvone. One enantiomer smells like spearmint and the other like caraway. It's an obvious example, since the flavor and taste changes, but there are compounds that don't necessarily change their flavor or smell, but which change their behaviour inside your body. It's kind of a huge thing with drug development. Chirality is still new-ish in chemistry and it's not really in the public sphere of awareness. Nor does every chemist out in the world pay it heed. However, any biological system that uses enzymes to function will have some different sensitivities to differing chemical compounds based on their enzymes and the stereochemistry involved.

In our universe, words like natural, unnatural, or artificial are almost meaningless. If something exists in nature, it is built from smaller and smaller bits of... nature.

"Natural" vs "Artifical" is basically just human hubris. Us thinking that our premaditated and intricate ways of displacing atoms using our "naturally" given cognitive abilities is so different from other animals using their "naturally" given traits to, unintentionally and more roughly, do the very same that we have to call the one occurence natural and the other artificial. Everything that transpires within the laws of physics is natural as far as I'm concerned. It holds true for being a bee producing honey as it holds true for being a human mixing chemicals in a lab.

Protip: Not all artificial flavors are worse for you than the original. Case and point - Sassafras is the main ingredient in traditional root beer. Sassafras was found to be carcinogenic in the 1960s and was banned from commercial sale of food. An artificial flavor, which is not carcinogenic, was created to allow us to have non-toxic root beer.

Banana flavor is based on the banana that went extinct in the 1950ties not on the current one that's why banana candies taste completely different from our bananas.

I'll start eating healthy when healthy food starts tasting like chocolate, french fries, burgers, pizza and potato chips. When that happens, I won't have problem eating healthy.

There is a difference between natural chemicals such as the ones that appear in nature and the ones made in a laboratory. The chemicals One finds naturally in food are good for you anything else, not so much.

Natural doesnt always means healthier and I don't think chemical always entails bad, nonetheless natural is usually healthier than chemical

banana candy does not taste like bananas because the flavor is for a different breed of banana that isn't eaten any more

To my knowledge, artificial banana flavoring is attempting to copy the Gros Michel banana. Which is no longer (as far as I know) being exporting to the united states.

Just to answer the question you never did: Banana candy tastes nothing like bananas because its flavor is based off a different species of banana which almost went extinct 55 years ago, the Gros Michel.

If vanilla comes from beaver butt, I dread asking about the chocolate.

Banana candy tastes like the previous generation of bananas. Like the current generation, it was monoclonal. We used poor farming techniques and a fungus killed them all.

The word Chemical gets a bad rap, because whenever every body says it to mean something that is bad, they mean to say Carcinogen. But no that's too hard to say (for some reason) let's keep saying chemical as shorthand because all the health nuts I know at the gym do that. -_-

fun fact - banana flavored candies DO taste like banana, but they taste like a species of banana that basically went extinct decades ago.

banana candies flavors are based off the Gros Michel banana not the Cavendish banana, cause its was a more sweeter better tasting banana till it was killed by disease

Funny how people consider watermelon "natural" yet ignore the fact it is a prime example of a GMO.

Because the banana flavour is based on the banana strain that got wiped out and the replacement you're used to has a much weaker flavour. Simple. Apparently the now-extinct strain tasted exactly like the artificial banana flavouring
@johannesgaida3137

Actually banana flavour is the flavour of an older type of banana which is extinkct now

Alot of sweets and alcoholic beverages contain castoreum. I work with the stuff and the variety of products it goes into is impressive. Feel sorry for the beavers though as the castoreum can not be harvested unless they're dead.
