Today we are sharing how to Naturally Grow & Dry your own Garlic.
Hi, we are Matt & Sara. Along with our 4 kids, our dog, our cat, kittens, 4 pigs, a lot of chickens and even more bees we have been developing our homesteading lifestyle. After over a decade on our property we are finally debt free and using our new FREEDOM to do what we have always wanted to do (be more self reliant)!

Nice harvest, I'm gonna have to try to plant some this fall. See how it does for me.

Sara, garlic will most likely stunt the growth of beans, peas, and most legumes, and should be planted further away to prevent reduced growth. Much like beans, the herbs parsley and sage might not do the best near garlic. Maybe try cucumbers or squash instead. 😊

Interesting. I haven’t noticed my beans being stunted but am doing it for the opposite reason to put nitrogen back in for the garlic growth the next Season. That would be a lot of squash! 😊 Do you have a recommendation for bush cucumbers. I’ve never had good luck with them and usually plant climbing varieties.

@@mattsara2802 we also plant climbing varieties, silver slicers for the win so I don’t have a reco for bush varieties, sorry.

I watched another video on garlic harvesting and he cut the tops off leaving a couple inches and he trimmed the roots a little and washed them. Do you think that’s a bad idea for our area? I wish I could remember who it was and if it was hard neck or not.

You can certainly cut the tops off and store them in say an open basket. I know a professional garlic grower who stores all year in paper bags. I clean up the roots either now or when I store but careful not to cut into the garlic and wipe dirt off best I can with something dry. I don’t wash because I don’t want to risk wiping off the layer the garlic needs to survive storage (those papery bits).

I didn’t get any garlic this year because I planted in raised beds and every single clove froze. I had 4 come up that I missed. I’m very sad because I eat so much garlic! ❤ what is your favorite garlic? Are you getting any rain. None down here at all. A front will come toward us and it either dissipates or splits and goes around us.

Oh my! That stinks! I wonder if covered with mulch or hay it would do better … 🤔 The rain keeps missing us too! We’ve had a few good ones but mostly seems to avoid us as well. I love the Metechi & German Extra Hardy for taste but the Chesnok Red grows the best for me so I plant the most of it.

@@mattsara2802 I had it covered really thick with straw. We’ve only had a trace of rain since mid May. It had rained for a week before than and I couldn’t get things planted because it was too wet.
