We smoked rabbit tobacco rolled in brown paper bag or in a corncob pipe and chew it when we were kids. Mother banned it from the house, however. A few years ago my brother and I were walking in the field of the old homestead where we grew up and ran across some rabbit tobacco. We pulled off some of the cured leaves and began to chew it like we did when we were kids. After a few minutes my brother said “this doesn’t taste as good as it used to taste.” I said “Fred, it never did”.
I love this comment. Thank goodness experimenting with smoking Rabbit Tobacco is safer than regular tobacco which leads to nicotine addiction and illnesses. You and your brother are right. What was "cool" as a kid, lost its fascination once I grew older. Ah, the joys of childhood memories! Best, Horace
After some research, I found in Revelation 22:2 ....."and the leaves (of the tree of life) were for the healing of the nations". Thanks again for sending your comment. I enjoy always learning, especially learning from my viewers! Blessings, Horace
@@horacedouty8126have you read about kaneh bosm ? It's a Hebrew word that is in the holy Torah used for spiritual, medical , nutritional, industrial and recreational uses.
I'm 68 now, but I remember my grandparents talking about all the uses of rabbit tobacco. And I do remember going to their home, and my granny would have it hanging their house, and it did give off a sweet syrupy smell. Thanks, brother, for sharing. Don't know where you're at. But what little I see is that it's absolutely beautiful. ❤
Hi Terry, I live in Lexington, which is in the Valley of Virginia. Yes, the mountains and scenery are especially beautiful! Thanks for sharing your childhood memories. Best, Horace
I love this little fragrant plant. There was so much more of it when I was a child. I hope folks will begin to allow conditions for it to become prevalent again. Thank you for the tip for tea. Enjoy! Best wishes, Horace
*Hail!* 🇺🇸 Was i absent those days, I don't feel left out anymore. *Thank You* Imagine if All had learned this Treasured knowledge. TRUTH is Priceless, *SHARE* the Wealth. Took years to see how history shows actions of greed; Denied the teachings of Natives' wisdom, and late in cherishing these useful tools. Not just people have changed, Rabbits use to nest in neighbors yard, i raised 2, but haven't spotted any in years. Snakes were easier to find, Sadly, very few seen. Yards are different, mine may be too active in growth, much catching up to do, but I'll be looking for this Pseudognaphalium obtusifolium, Eyes don't mind, now that i know its name.
I really appreciate your thoughtful comment. Yes, we have been slow to realize many good things of Nature and History. Take encouragement of t the progress being made. People will never be perfect, but we must look for the progress made by many. I hope you see and smell Rabbit Tobacco soon! Best wishes, Horace
thank you, very interesting herb and description of uses. I feel like we are somewhat losing the continuity in a lot of facets of life like these. Appreciate your putting the nature lessons up.
Love this! There's a very specific spot i would walk by on my way to my deer stand that would smell of male syrup! Undeniably maple syrup. I looked at the trees and ground, but never thought a "weed " would smell like that. I'm sure that's what it was now. At least can't think of what else it would be!
The plant has been used for all sorts of medical purposes for hundreds of years. I bet your grandmother knew of some. Thanks for watching and your comment. Best, Horace
Thanks for the video. Haven’t heard rabbit tobacco since I was a kid. I remember the older folks asking if us kids had been out there in the field chewing or smoking rabbit tobacco. Guess that’s what they did when they were youngins
I have fond memories of chewing and smoking Rabbit Tobacco as a child. For some reason I do not see much of it anymore. I appreciate your comment. God Bless, Horace
Watching this as my wife is picking leaves off our last harvest of rabbit tobacco. From my experience the tea is great for clearing congestion. Thank you for the great video.
Thanks for the great tip for using it for tea. For some reason, Rabbit Tobacco is not as plentiful as in my childhood. I suspect the reason is that farmers are more thorough in ridding fields of "weeds".
Outstanding it grows all around my cabin unfortunately no wild rabbits but will take your advice as an aside you can also make a tea with it, thank you look forward to future posts
Hi Christopher, I suspect Rabbit Tobacco is gradually fading from our fields. You are fortunate to have it growing prolifically around your cabin! I planted seeds this Fall. Hoping it will germinate and produce. Thanks again for your support. Horace
Thanks for teaching me something new. From the LADYBIRD JOHNSON CENTER: This species was formerly in the genus Gnaphalium, derived from the Greek gnaphallon ("tuft of the wool"), referring to the nature of the flower heads. It is now considered a "pseudo," or false, Gnaphalium.
Hi Tim, I appreciate your information from the Ladybird Johnson Center. She did a wonderful job of raising interest in wildflowers. I am curious as to what "something new" you learned from my video. :) Thanks for watching and your comment. Best, Horace
Horace, since I’ve retired I’ve been studying botany in an amateur sense and I somehow overlooked this common plant, maybe I focus too much on the rarer stuff down here in extreme southern Illinois. I had never heard of “rabbit tobacco or of any medicinal uses related to it, so now I’m aware I’ll keep my eyes open for it in my travels. I try to gather info from all sources and I just added you to the list…. Thanx
Glad you are watching. Yes, the countryside in this part of the world - the Valley of Virginia, is awesome. Hope you can come visit someday. Best wishes, Horace
I live in Washington DC, there is something in a landscaped area that sometimes gives off a scent of maple syrup. I've long wondered what it is, I'll look for rabbit tobacco!
That's great! I hope you find the Rabbit Tobacco Plant. Follow your nose. Look for small blossoms. The leaves have the fragrance, too. You may brush up against it before you recognize it. Good Luck! Thank you for you comment and for watching. Happy Plant Hunting! Best wishes, Horace
Glad you found the video! Rabbit Tobacco enjoys a long list of medicinal purposes. I also did a follow-up, titled, "Rabbit Tobacco No. 2.. Thanks for watching. Best, Horace
Fortunately, the herb can be grown. Seed is available. However, it must be sown at least two months before the end of frost date. Thanks for your comment and watching. Best Wishes, Horace
You were lucky to be introduced to Rabbit Tobacco as a child. Now you know much more than the average person. I hope it continues to grow near you for your enjoyment and medicinal benefits. Thank you for your comment and for watching. Best wishes, Horace
I occasionally puffed on Rabbit Tobacco when I was a child growing up on the farm. Glad you found it to be a relaxing agent. Thanks for your comment. I post new Nature Lessons each Tuesday. Best, Horace
It is a great decongestant. I think the active drug is related to pseudoephedrine. I make a tincture that works on my sinuses. It is spectacularly bitter.
Thanks for sharing. Yes, it does have a strong flavor! Glad you know how to make a tincture. Please note I did a follow-up video recently, "Rabbit Tobacco No. 2". Best wishes, Horace
You can Google sources for seeds and plants. Good luck. I planted seeds several months ago. They require at least 60 days of near freezing temperature before they will germinate. I have my fingers crossed! Good luck to you. Best, Horace
Sounds like you had a happy childhood! More kids need to have this opportunity and pleasure. This would be so much better than the drugs available today. Thank you for your comment and for watching. Best wishes, Horace
@@horacedouty8126 I did indeed sir. The best! My pastor’s-wife grandma taught us grandkids how to roll rabbit tobacco in brown paper bag paper. She was the best!
