It's because it's the part of the quadratic formula that's under the square root sign.

very very very very late question but is it right that when the value of the discriminant is negative, instead of no solution it would be 2 diff imaginary numbers?

emma lee yes it would be right, simply saying that if the discriminant is less than 0, then the quadratic has " no solution" is not entirely right, it's just that it has 2 complex conjugate solutions.

The Pom means no real roots & he mentions something like that around 5:08 ("no real solution"). No real solution / roots. You could use complex roots / solutions if you know about complex numbers.

Do perfect square trinomials always have roots? I am\ currently doing a question where i have to proof mx(x)-2nx+6n-9m=0 has real roots for all values of m and n. And state the condition where they will have 2 real and equal roots. and i managed to proof that the equation is a perfect square trinomial

Yes they do (x+a)^2 has roots equal roots at x=-a and (x-a)^2=0 has equal roots at x=a
