This was our preliminary trip to the Dagestan Reserve. Or rather, to the Kizlyar Bay, where the largest colony of Dalmatian pelicans in Russia is located in the reed beds. We were to stay here for a few days to plan in detail the plan for future shootings when the pelicans had offspring. There are no dry elevated islands on which one could settle down. Around the water. For help and experience, we turned to local fishermen. Just that day there was a big catch. And two fishermen gathered in the village to hand over the fish and buy food. A couple of days one beam will be free. We were offered to take him for the duration of the filming. We moved the beam closer to the nesting colony. We went out to the shooting in the dark and disguised ourselves in the nearest reed beds. Pelicans are sociable birds with a calm character. Therefore, they always live in a flock, and nest in groups of several dozen pairs. The nest site is chosen by the female. She is building it. But the building material itself is already the concern of the male. Usually, the female lays two or three eggs. They incubate in succession. The food of pelicans is only fish. During the season, a family of curly pelicans eats no more than one ton of fish.
