Nature Photography | For the Love of Ferns

In this nature photography video, I explore my Love of Ferns whilst out on a walk through a woodland in the Lake District. August is generally a difficult time for nature photography and with that in mind, there is no better subject than ferns. It's at this time of year when ferns are generally at their best, reproducing and therefore in tip top condition.

Simon. Where do I start? That was brilliant!!! not only did I love the shots, the film was just gripping. It was so clear that you were loving it and entirely absorbed in the work, it came across so clearly. The tech info was great, succinct, comprehensive, Impossible to be indifferent about work like this. A great atmosphere all the way through and I loved the dank, drippy sound in the backlit fronds scene. If you don't get some TV work from this I'll show my behind on the Guild Hall steps. "That Simon Booth... I've met im!!!"

So wonderful to happen upon your channel via a tip off from Thomas Heaton. As a passionate photographer from Canada I too struggle with the summer light. Sun comes up too early, sets too late, its too hot, too many bugs, humidity and sweat fogging up my viewfinder and back screen. It's all true and then you help remind us that we need to slow down in the summer time, take a look around and see the many small wonders that lay just along the footpath. Too often as photographers we want the big sweeping vista the large panorama, that we forget that the whole universe is to behold from an ants perspective.

You are spot on correct Maurice. The only thing that tends to put me out of action is heat. For some reason I just can't tolerate it! Fortunately, really hot weather is pretty infrequent in the UK.

Great Fern photos, especially the close up of the fern with the rain drops with the dark background giving contrast. The ferns down in Essex and Suffolk have grown so abundantly this summer and have alread started turning colour from green to yellow, orange through to brown.

Thanks for watching John. Learning to see the world away from the norm takes time but like anything, the more we practice, the better we become. The artist viewfinder app might prove useful to you. You can input your range of lenses (Focal lengths) and the app masks them off on the phone LCD. It really helps to declutter the larger field of view that our eyes see.

Your first (I’m writing while watching) fern shot has at least 3 species there: Dryopteris dilitata (Broad Buckler Fern - possibly expansa - Northern Buckler Fern, given where you are), Dryopteris filix-mas (Common Male Fern) and one of the Dryopteris affinis group (Scaly Male Fern). There are several in this group and I need a crib to get to the right species. As a lover of ferns (I have about 350 different types in my garden), it was wonderfully to see a photographer taking shots of them - thank you. Edit - love the Polypodiums, another difficult to sort out genus - we have 3 species and 3 hybrids. I’m assuming these were interjectum, but I would not bet even my cheapest lens on that identification!.
@SimonBoothPhotography
@SimonBoothPhotography 3 года назад
Thanks Mark for your appreciation of the detail. I generally need cribs to separated male and buckler ferns and polypody’s down to species level. I recall there’s between three and four in each! I soon forget given all the other plant groups, mammals, birds, invertebrates and the list goes on that I work with daily, I don’t carry field guides on photo trips so I play it safe.

Sometimes I feel very desperate looking for them so it's a relief when they come.

Wonderful! I'd actually just been looking at my photos of our last trip to the Azores and one of the nature parks with ferns in abundance and wishing I could go back there now and pay them the attention they deserve! I always learn so much from these videos, thank you.

Oh no Dave. Looks like you'll need to re-book the trip and go back and do it all again :-)

@@SimonBoothPhotography Well, as you've said before, Simon, for the best photos you need to go back to the same places several times... I will commit myself to that onerous duty!

Hi Simon. Love the broad buckler fern image with the raindrops. I imagine it took a fair bit of patience to get that final image! Thank you for another reply enjoyable video.

Hi Tim In the moment I jumped to a conclusion...It's actually a male fern on this occasion! There is no third level of division in the pinnule...what an amateur!

Simon, thank you for the motivation to just get out...I love the dawn light yet would love to expand a portfolio to include summer, daylight photography. Problem: I spend my winter months in a place with intense daylight hours and have been intimidated by this light and avoiding photographing. I want to expand my "toolkit" of skills to that of shooting in this kind of light....Any pointers or previous videos you could refer me to?

I shoot smaller scenes in these conditions. I take control of the light using a diffuser ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-N9snOCgcLRo.html

Enjoyed your vlog Simon. Never heard of mizzle before, think I'll start using it. Nice close up woodland images, think the rain definitely helps 👍

Stunning photography as ever Simon. Your presentations are always a pleasure to watch as your calming nature and knowledge of the subject matter are something that many other in the landscape/nature vlogging genre do not possess. Your eye for an image is something many of us wish we had, well me for sure. There is a gorge locally I go to that has an abundance of evergreen ferns and mosses that I think you would love. Very enjoyable watch. Atb Alan

Hi Alan, good to hear from you again. I agree the nature aspect is something that needs to stay to keep this channel different. It's interesting how these images present themselves because I rarely have a plan!

Hi Simon, I'm slowly working my way through all of your films and absolutely love your content and images. I hope this question finds you, but are any of these images polarised (obviously where effective), and what is your take on using a polariser for photographing foliage and vegetation? Only curios and is probably a creative choice for yourself, but keen to get your thoughts. Thanks again for your films!
@SimonBoothPhotography
@SimonBoothPhotography 2 года назад
Hi Tids From memory, the first and the last were but the close up wasn't because I needed speed. In answer to your question, yes I do use them on wet vegetation if creatively, the image is better for it. What I am trying to say is, it's dependant on the effect I want and it's not always a given that I use one.

Thanks Tom. No I didn’t reduce noise. I can’t remember now what the ISO was but the Pentax 645z is pretty noise free up to 800, even 1600.

As far as I know, we don't have Bracken here in the Southeastern US. Can you tell me is Bracken a type of fern or is it a different plant that just looks like ferns? Great shots and very enjoyable to watch Simon.
@SimonBoothPhotography
@SimonBoothPhotography 4 года назад
Hi Phillip, bracken is a type of fern, the difference is that bracken is branched, whereas other ferns aren't. The fronds of a typical fern grow from the base. On bracken, they are on the branches.

Hi Laura I use a combination of Photoshop and Lightroom, probably 50/50 on most images.
