Nature: Red-headed woodpeckers 

This clip shows why it is so important to leave dead trees standing if they aren't at risk of injuring someone. Dead trees provide shelter and food for insects, birds, and other animals.

I love these looks at nature on CBS Sunday Morning they are what I anticipate, look forward to seeing when Sunday comes. I don't think I would sit through some of the other sad topics about the human condition if the nature shots were discontinued here. These looks at how the world was created are the only sign that life is better somewhere, that life could be better. if the "creator" had limited humans to the same ability to exist and share the bountiful blessings that every other part of existence always shares. Evolution is a process that has continued for untold millions of years but limiting the transition to human delusions becomes like cancer. That's why people experience mass destruction instead of these examples of nature.

I have at least 2 Ivory-billed woodpeckers in the woods behind my house, and I will drive my camper back there on the weekends just to catch a glimpse, but never have. I will never stop trying.

Woodpeckers are amazing birds. I've seen a woodpecker do his call on top of a pole or tree and would see blue Jays and Cardinals flock to him, watching him as he spoke. It was pretty amazing! ❤ the woodpecker

We leave you this morning in Knox Farm State Park in western New York where some red-headed woodpeckers are still pecking on dry trees

I just wanted to commend CBS for featuring our most beautiful songbird.....the Red Headed Woodpecker. CBS might want to hold on to this video clip as I predict the Red Headed Woodpecker is headed for extinction like the Imperial and Ivory-billed Woodpecker. And it is Not due to habitat loss. I have never seen so many dead trees in my life. This is primarily due to Droughts, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, lightning strikes, wild fires, insects, disease, beavers and even logging. it will be due to the non native, highly invasive European Starling. For 10 years between 2006 and 2016 I documented this on my 30 acre farm in NW Tennessee near Reel Foot Lake. Fossils from the Red Headed Woodpecker have been found by archeologists in Virginia, Florida and Illinois dating back 2 million years. It's a shame that our government desires only to de-list species and not add any to the Endangered Species List at least as a Threatened Species when they really need additional Help and protection from us. One of, if not the one event that dictated my career in life is seeing this gorgeous bird. I was 4 maybe 5 years old when I first saw my first Red Headed Woodpecker. It was about 1952 in NW. Tennessee. My parents both worked weekdays and my Mom would drop me off in the mornings at my Aunt's house to take care of me for the day. I was sitting on her back porch waiting for her to get off the phone which might take awhile. When suddenly, out of the corner of my eye, I saw something flashing black and white like a checkered flag. It flew from my left to right for about 50 feet....30 feet directly in front of me, and landed on the trunk of my Aunt's Apple tree. The woodpecker inched itself up the tree and as I then leaned forward to get a better view the RHW saw me and inched itself around the tree trunk to hide from me. Then the Woodpecker would peek out around tree trunk at me then back again. Needless to say this behavior was not just interesting but intriguing as well. It was and remains to this day as my "Spark Bird" as they call it in Birder's world. This event, as well as some others, inspired me to finish college, and go to work for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for 30 years enforcing all Federal laws protecting wildlife, particularly Migratory Birds I have now had a total of 71 years experience with this and am very concerned for the future of our Red Headed Woodpecker. Oh, someone asks what other experiences influenced me? Ok, it was the Passenger Pigeon, Aldo Leopold, DDT, Rachael Carson's "Silent Spring". Those were always enough reason. You will never defeat, or cheat Mother Nature without some adverse repercussions. True Story. Daniel

We have several families of the Red Headed Woodpeckers that eat birdseed and suet in our yard. Have the babies right now with the adults Love watching how they chase other birds off the feeders and suet cakes. Such beautiful birds!
