I love your humor. I love Daniel Smith Primateks and basically all their watercolors. I have over 80 of them 😂🤦♀️ I may have a problem. Their Lunar and Mayans colors are in my top favorites as well 😍
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed this. You have me beat with 80. 😂 I think I have about 30 or so. They are top quality and very consistent every time I buy them.
I have the same problem! I haven’t dared to count what I have - the actual number would be too shocking to bear. I just love color. And I love to paint.
You have become one of my favorite Watercolor Channels to watch. Your sense of humor has me cracking up. I bet you are a blast to have around if this is how you act just swatching paint 😂😂. Keep up the great commentary, you’re knocking it out of the park for me🫡
I really enjoyed watching you swatch out these colors. I absolutely need Mayan Blue in my life. I'm glad I found your channel and look forward to watching more of your videos. 😊😊
Hematite Violet is one of my favorites. Mixing in a little Piemontite really makes it pop in the undertone. Those two colors give me a lot of joy in how nicely they play off each other. The textures are awesome. I also agree that the categorizing in the naming on the cards is really off.
Thanks Adria! I love piemontite so I will have to try these together. On occasion when I find two colors that work well together like that I mix them in together in a pan and let it dry. That might need to happen here. 🙂
Most excellent demonstration. Please do more. You really showed that you can’t rely on a paper example of the true color. Saves $$$ to get the dots and try them out to select the colors that you really want 🎉❤
"Sparkle McGee"... you crack me up! I'm falling in love with Serpentine Genuine. Glad I picked up a stick of it awhile back. I recently mixed a three color mix dark brown using Serpentine that separates just enough for what I'm looking for. DS sticks are a great bargain for some of these Prima Teks. Piemontite is also quite nice. I like Sodalite as a granulating Payne's Grey of sorts. Still trying to mix that perfect three color separating grey/black that mimics what one of my ink pens does when I turn it into a wash. Oh well... one day...
I enjoy making people smile. 🙂 I have not tried the sticks but I know a lot of people say they work just as well and they are much more cost effective. Those sound like good combos. I use quite a bit of these and I'm always impressed by the results. 👍🏻
I've read the original ultramarine was ground up lapis lazuli so it's funny that you described it as almost ultramarine. They're all so faint now... I guess they used all the good rocks up hundreds of years ago.
I love your sense of humor! I just subscribed to your channel. Your swatching videos are very well done. I love Kyanite Genuine, too! I have used it for the sky in some winter night paintings. I love the way it sparkles. Sleeping Beauty Turquoise is beautiful, too. I've used it in some floral paintings. I get too excited about granulating colors, lol.
These are so interesting. Of course, I'm looking at the image on my laptop, so there is a perceptive layer in between, but I think there's a reason I enjoy black and white. I am impressed by your ability to distinguish colors. My sister has that gift as well. :) Love the video! 🥰🥰🥰
If you plan to use any of the sparkling ones, I highly recommend two different water & brush set ups. The sparkles get into the water/brush and then into everything else. Which is great if you want everything to sparkle. However, I have noticed that it is difficult to get the sparkles out of the water tank and it tends to carry over from one painting session to another. One thing I noticed in this video is that using a waterbrush seems to have avoided this issue. I will have to try that myself and see if I can keep the non-sparkling paints clean. Thank you for this review and the previous one. It helps to be able to compare them. I love your sense of humor.
😂😂 loved your theory about the genuine tigers eye and the burnt one... and when are you testing them using the wet in wet technique, now you discovered how lovely they develop when used that way? You will marvel, as you felt with White Nights granulating paints... by the way, White Nights was my first professional level paint, and until today, I use them a lot, even having Daniel Smith, Schmincke, Holbein, Rembrandt, Kuretake... White Nights is my long lasting love ❤
Glad you enjoyed this. I've been using these for years so I've already used them that way and you are correct, they are amazing. I will swatch them out again that way in another video to show how beautiful they are. 👍🏻
Great presentation! I enjoy watching/seeing how you apply paints to show off their darknesses and their light (not counting the sparkles, which I love, but not for landscapes or botanicals or still lifes...). I like it also because my favorite w/c-s are from Winsor-Newton, and it's always good to know what the opposition is up to! *grin*
PY216 is a yellow or orange that granulates at least slightly. Yellow PY216 only granulates this much, while orange PY216 can granulate moderately. PY216 is a rutile tin zinc compound. It’s a slightly muted yellow or orange colour (just a tiny bit duller than yellow and orange cadmiums), semi-transparent to opaque, able to granulate a little. It’s a fun colour. You can mix skin tones with the orange variety. And you can use the yellow variety as a substitute for Naples yellow.
Loved watching this investigative demonstration of the DS dot colours. These are a brand I've long wanted but just can't afford. Are all DS colours granulating? I find I don't quite agree with ALL the colours you love, but I agree that some have been put into the wrong families, like that obvious green in a 'blues' family. I keep looking at smaller sets of DS paints but not liking the colours in those sets. They look so boring! But looking at these as you swatched them and then in close up, these are much more exciting. I'd love to see you set out a swatch of colours YOU'D put into a small box. Any chance you might do that?
They are pricey. Not all DS paints are granulating but all of the Primatek line is. They are beautiful. I will be putting together a palette video soon to show all the colors I plan to use in my main palette. Thank you for the suggestion. 🙂
I really enjoyed this video - thanks for the great closeups of the swatches. I don’t have any granulating colors currently - I thought I didn’t care for them but now I am going to try a few of them out. Agree with you - I wasn’t crazy about a couple of the lighter green shades but I did love the purple & amethyst colors.
Hi Debi! I can't even look at those light greens. They make me nauseous. 😂 The amethyst comes in the Primatek sampler pack. It is a pretty color and it sparkles like crazy.
I’ve found the Green Apetite Gen very tricky to use. I don’t see it on your swatch but it has a light spring green color that separates out and it’s so unpredictable. It’s pretty but you have to go with whatever it wants to do.
@@IllustrationsByPete I meant to say - I see your swatch, but you didn’t get that light green that always separates out from the darker green. I guess I need to work on how I express myself.
Don't worry about it. When I did these I did not also include a very diluted sample like I do now in my swatching. I need to redo this with the extra swatches. All of these separate more than what I did here.
i got that dot set a few months ago. i did a postage stamp 3 layer mono color swatch for each and a small combo color painting. i loved some of them, liked most of them, and disliked mostly the very heavy sparkly ones. i'm not generally a shimmer fan, it has it's place. some of them i have used up and bought actual tubes as replacements (notably the serpentine). they all have a real personality to them, not a lot of flat color, that takes a bit of familiarity to use to good effect. i tend to ignore the companies color designation, i would also group them differently most of the time. i think lapis (the original ultra marine) was the most disappointing to me but i can see a tube of blue apatite in my future as well as zoisite. i layered the kyanite on top of apatite and it made a beautiful night sky effect.
Thanks for sharing. I will have to try that combo and see what it looks like. I tried to use the two sparkle colors I enjoyed but I couldn't get used to them. I love the hue but the sparkle is too much. Maybe mixed they will be useful.
OMGosh, Pete, you crack me up. 😂. I LOVE it when you critique stuff!! The camera shows the granulation very well. I do see the sparkles, but not so fond that. Not sure what to use it for. Maybe water? It would have to be a very specific piece. I may like it more if it didn’t have a lot of sparkles. 🤷♀️ IDK. I’d have to try it in a piece. My favorite of all the colors was Oceanic Mayan Blue. I have a hard time with yellows also…the ones I find are not what I’m looking for, they often look like lemons on crack😆
😂 I'm glad you enjoyed this! Mayan blue is wonderful. I always have that in my palette. If the other 2 didn't have sparkles I would jump all over them. In the next video I use them but decided not to purchase them. They are wonderful hues but the sparkle is too much.
I enjoyed this video and I’m not going to yell at you. I would like to see more swatching videos like this because I use a lot of Daniel Smith watercolors (not so much Schminke).
These are beautiful. They are the reason I started getting DS to begin with. I'm glad you enjoyed this. More swatching videos are coming up. This week's was a unique one. Thanks! 🙂
Awesome! I use a zoom lens and zoom in manually. Unless you are using 4K to record, which I do not, you destroy the image quality when you zoom in digitally. Anything you need advice on or help with figuring out how to set up, don't hesitate to ask.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoy these. I understand completely. I always see someone use a color and think I need it when I really don't. I've started with some other brands now and that was a mistake too. 😂
@@IllustrationsByPete haha if i start with other brands … it’ll be the death of me 😂 Or homelessness of, for sure. Im already on a slippery slope 😬 how I found you 😄 looking at White Nights. Never tried before.
