70 years has passed for me and this video has rekindled the fond memories of the Sandhill and Whooping cranes arriving on the fields of our farm in middle Nebraska. The hundreds, then thousands, then uncounted numbers of these magnificent migrants resting before their long flights to the north into Canada. My father was so enamored with these flocks that he refused his daily work, such as starting up the loud and intrusive machinery, just to enjoy their calls for the day or two they came to grace their presence upon our land. It was a gift as to remind us that God needed to remind us of through his hand, he created the Sandhill and now so endangered Whooping Crane.

Where, and when did you 1st, see the mighty Sandhill Cranes? I saw them by Gibbon Nebraska in 1986-1993. I'm Claudia Heinowski of O'Neill Ne. May I ask your name ?

@@user-zx2xn1kj3u I grew up along the Platte. Between North Platte and Hershey. As a farm boy. known them all my life. I am now 77 YO. Even saw the intermingles of the Whooping Crane. They have always been a favorite to watch the gathering in the open fields, but they do make a lot of noises that was an irritation but to be expected.

My mother was born and raised in Nebraska until she got married and moved to New England. She was enourmously proud that the Sandhill Cranes, on their yearly migration back up North would stop and rest at the Platte River in Nebraska for a month or two. She witnessed it a couple of times and was in awe of these birds. May you rest in peace Mom.❤

I remember years ago driving through Nebraska in spring and watching endless flocks of migratories moving from south to north. And I do mean endless. What a marvel! To all the uninitiated, Nebraska is a wonder.

@Kevin L You need to get up to the northwest corner of the state. Chadron State Park, Toadstool Geologic Park, Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, Soldier Creek Wilderness at Ft. Robinson, etc. The most amazing fog bank I ever drove through was through northwest Nebraska and into the southern Black Hills. Otherworldly.

Nature in its glory. If only all bird colonies were so healthy in numbers. Wouldn't the skies be amazing.

They are so majestic! If you are lucky enough to have a yard you have wildlife to conveniently enjoy. I put a trail camera out in my yard because I saw a skunk. I live in a city so I was surprised. I was more surprised when as many as 8 skunks were in my yard every night and my Bichon was hanging out with them! I've named 12 skunks. Now I'm hanging out with them and they are very sweet. We also have as many as 6 raccoons in the front yard every night but they seem afraid of our harmless dog. And me. I'm working with a couple of paper wasp nests. At least 4 Queens returned from last year and they are working together. I think they remember me. Hymenoptera recognize human faces. My brother and I don't wear protection when we work with our bees. You just need to spend time with them and be gentle. I generally don't wear a shirt so I look the same each day. I've never been stung in my yard. Teach children that nature is all around them. They don't have to seek it out. Just look down.

I have never seen that many cranes in one place - rather lovely and whimsical.

What a sight. For several cultures cranes are a symbol of beauty, harmony, and grace. They represent positive change as they are associated with the New Year. In Korea they are admired as symbols of peace, longevity, and purity. In Christian stories and art, cranes are considered vigilant symbols of foresight, and the natural enemy of the Devil.

I think Jeophardy should have a catorgory titled " Ask NebrASKa". There are so many things about Nebraska that most people don't know like the Sandhill Cranes. I'd like to see if any of the "Educated Idiots" (contestents ?? ) that get on the show could get even 1 right when asked ! ! Who all agree with me ? PLEASE reply. Thank you !

Taking a break from watching any worldwide news for my own sanity and just watching this instead. These birds fly by my house and their calls make me go out to see 20 or 30 at a time slowly circling overhead then finally veering off towards their far off destination. Nature is such a calming thing in these times.
