Going from our home port to Bodø, for our first haul out and some new anti foul.
I named this video “Can she sail” because, as a motorsailer of course her sailing abilities are limited. For us, she still provides joyful sailing even if she’s not the fastest boat, and even if she won’t win any races, she’ll get us there in comfort and safety.
After this video was made, a few really important improvements have been done, replacing the beast 3 blade fixed prop with a four blade Variprop improved light wind sailing drastically. Also, all the sails are worn, and now we added a new 135% Genoa, which also made a huge improvement, for what she is. Now we sail a lot more🙂
More videos will come!

We are looking for a Nauticat 38 and this video has shown us the best side of sailing for those of us who have lived several years on a boat and are now also looking for the comfort that few other boats can offer. Great boat

If the Vikings had Nauticats, they would have sailed to Florida.

I race a Nauticat 44 on San Francisco bay, reaching long distance races, I can win, short up wind races, I can't win. But handicap racing is the game, so a 38 Nauticat that can get to the start line for every race in the series will do just fine. And when the race is over, turn on the engine and the heater and motor sail home.

I've seen your boat in a few races. You're reason I'm looking at this video.

Beautiful vessel. We have a 1983 Nauticat 36 which we are slowly restoring named AARLUK after the Inuit name for the orca. She sails wonderfully, motors briskly and, like your own boat, is very comfortable passage maker.

Nice to see your boat, and that motor sailors can Sail, myself trying in a old Finnclipper. And in those cold environments. Thanks!

Always liked these boats. Could never afford one. Ended up with a smaller fiberglass sloop. But it was sailing anyway.

Mvh Jarle

I'm busy, otherwise I'd like to setup a one boat sailing club with a Nauticat 38. The solar panel flaps :)

Hats off to you helming in the outside position when you could be inside nice and warm 👏🏻 does the woodburner work ok when sailing or would you only use it when not making way?
@Stefanesai
@Stefanesai Год назад
In the fjords, between steep mountains the winds are so unpredictable that sailing from the inside is challenging. And I like the fresh air🙂. But I’d rather be sailing in a warmer climate❤️🤠. The wood stove works in any condition, but we add a piece of chimney which is in the way of the boom, so normally we don’t sail and have a fire at the same time. Also, fire on a boat is not something to be taken lightly, so it’s better under supervision in a controlled environment.

Lovely boat. Is the Nauticat limited when just under sail? Can you still do everything a normal sailing boat can do just slower ?
@Stefanesai
@Stefanesai Год назад
She can do more or less everything. She can’t go as close to the wind as “proper” sailboats, closer than around 40 degrees apparent wind angle is pushing it. And she is a bit slower, but she’ll get there comfortably 🙂

Hi, love this boat......are they built as good as I read they are, as in they don't break or need huge amount of repairs, or are they like a lot of other boats a constant battle to keep at sea? Just asking as really thinking of getting one 😃
@Stefanesai
@Stefanesai 11 месяцев назад
All boats have their issues, but I really think it helps that they are built well to begin with! After owning this boat for a few years now, and putting down a lot of hours, I would still buy and older, heavy displacement well built boat over a newer cheap production boat any day of the week.

Can one steer from inside if he wants to? I understand the advantages of steering from outside but hypothetically can one do it from inside in these conditions? Thanks 🙏🏻
@Stefanesai
@Stefanesai 4 дня назад
Sure, no problem! But under sail it is better on longer stretches or in stable conditions as all sail handling must be done outside.

Hi, we are thinking of getting an NC 38 as a live-aboard, what do you think?
@Stefanesai
@Stefanesai 3 месяца назад
Depending on how many people you are and your needs and expectations it surely can be done. Space is always an issue, and like a garage, they will never be big enough. But with size comes cost so there will always be a compromise. Visit a few if you can, and imagine living there with all your stuff🙂

Found you rchannel because Im "window shopping" for such a boat as yours frim 38 to 44 feet. The pilot house giving extended season is one factor making this boat atractive. Are you happy with your choice???
@Stefanesai
@Stefanesai Год назад
Hi, every boat is a compromise, and the trick is to try and prioritize your wishes and demands, and go from there. Some things will be important, and some things not so important, while others may be dealbreakers. When we were “window shopping” as you say, we had a few “must have” on our list. A proper pilot house, a proper inside and outside helm position, solid rails and bulwarks, since we have kids and a big dog was some of them. Also solid built, a keel that won’t fall off and a skeg hung rudder. We always came back to Nauticat, even though we found a few other brands here and there, Motiva 39 was one we looked at. But it didn’t set my heart on fire… So to answer your question, yes. Very happy. The cons on our model is the lack of a proper cockpit, which makes sailing in rough weather from the aft deck not optimal. Also, it is now 43 years old, but she’s a lovely boat. Plans for a change is somewhere down the road, probably several years down, and we are considering a more sailing oriented Nauticat 43, which may suit future plans better. Or, my dream, a 441… but as dreams are cheap, reality is not, and those are for now out of reach for me. But yes, happy with the 38 and it will take a lot for the next boat NOT to be a Nauticat👍🙂

First off all ,all boats with sails,sails??! So also nauticats motorsailors,a word wich consist off two : motor+ sailor. Motorsailors have substantial lower sailarea than sailingboats,so they are slower. Is your boat a finversion wich has taller masts than the longkeelversion? Anyhow a motorsailor sais…but never as fast as a sailingboat, ….but they have other pro to consider!

Hi thanks for your great content. Can i ask you what the engine cruising speed and maximum engine speed is?
@Stefanesai
@Stefanesai 6 месяцев назад
The engine max speed is rated 2600 rpm. We never go full throttle. We cruise at 1500-1800 rpm, normally doing 6,5-7 knots at 1700 rpm. The new prop we installed is a trade off, we lost some power under engine so going into the weather and waves affects speed a little more than with the old fixed prop. However, we easily gained a knot in light and medium conditions under sail, so an ok trade off. At next haul out we will try to adjust the pitch a little and see how that turns out.
