"tsk, tsk, temper temper" that's excellent. I mean, responding to four 152mm shells with nine 16" shells because one shell hit is a little excessive, but I guess Wisconsin's attitude was "ok, you want to play, I'll play!"

The Wisconsin didn't destroy a mountain. It simply engaged in an agricultural landscaping project to smooth the terrain of N. Korea, enabling the inhabitants to plant crops easily. Pre-fertilized with an early form of "soylent green" to boost output.

Just took this tour, and stood where he is standing. Outstanding crew, and presentation. Keith was our tour guide and did an excellent job...

Not overkill.....just mission accomplished. That gun position is no longer a threat to anyone. Lesson is don't pick on something with more and bigger guns.

These days they call it FAFO. North Korea FA, and they Found Out (FO). OTOH, if you manage to score a hit like that on a battleship, the only reasonable response in self-defense is a full broadside. One, you don't know if there are other gun emplacements. Two, the psychological effect of erasing the entire existence of the artillery emplacement and support crew is enough to give the next would-be bold commander pause.

No such thing as overkill in war. They were fired on and responded and neutralized the enemy gun position. Wiping them off the planet was an added bonus.

It might be that the Norks manning that battery misidentified 'Whiskey' as a Baltimore or Cleveland class cruiser. To the unpracticed eye they would appear similar, especially if you've never seen a battlewagon before. Both are big and crowded with guns. I think the North Vietnamese made a similar mistake when one of their shore batteries near Haiphong tried to engage New Jersey. In reply she rearranged the topography of the island the old Japanese strongpoint was built into. One of NJ's shells penetrated into the ammo magazine and the whole shebang was blown to Mars. At least the North Koreans hit their target, the NV missed entirely.

All four Iowa's took damage during their careers. Iowa BB- 61 suffered a turret explosion. New Jersey BB- 62 took friendly fire. Missouri BB- 63 got hit by a kamikaze. Wisconsin BB- 64 took a direct hit from N. Korea.

Always wondered what was going through the mind of that battery commander. Spots the biggest ship he's ever seen, knows good and well it's a Battleship, and somehow decides "Hey, let's take a crack at that thing"

That North Korean gun emplacement is probably equipped with the towed 152mm ML-20 gun-howitzer, a mobile version of which is the main gun of the SU-152 and ISU-152 tank destroyers.
