We are told all things are either male or female.
Everything on the surface of Mother Earth. Rocks, insects, birds, Plants, and the Five-fingered being.
Navajo Historian, Wally Brown teaches about the traditions of our Diné and the teachings about male and female.
How do you know if a certain rock is male or female? Or a plant? These are the questions answered in this video.

@timd524
@timd524 3 года назад
Two spirits is still either a male or a female as he says. It has been twisted by modern western culture. It was a person who understood or inclinations of the other sex but was always considered male or female. How it has been stolen and misrepresented by modern people to push their own modern non binary gender agenda which is actually the exact opposite of the original meaning, is actually tragic and a real disservice to the original concept.

@poodychulak
@poodychulak 3 года назад
@@timd524 Two-spirit is a modern umbrella term made by Native American/First Nations people to replace "berdache" which was an anthropological term (describing any person in "non-traditional" gender roles) and distance from the terms gay, lesbian, and trans, as they were considered offensive colonial projections. It is not culture-specific and different societies have different perspectives on gender, indigenous people are not a monolith. Two-spirit itself has been criticized for being as much a term of erasure as that which it was made to replace, leading to this whole interaction here. It was coined by one group in the 90s, so it's as much a recent invention as it is not universal. It's also important to note that it is about traditional and ceremonial roles and has little to do with sexuality or gender expression. Using yet another traditional culture to bash trans people and homosexuals isn't some enlightened take and romanticizing "savage wisdom" is hella racist.

I had that too quite strongly when I was a child, it helps to understand and form the world around us. But as I grew older and busier with the mundane things in life that "sense" was also somewhat forgotten for the most part. Sometimes when I'm somewhere strange or completely at ease with the world it might come back to me briefly. I hope to have that again permanently. But it's interesting as children totally unspoilt by materialism we are so in tune with nature and intuition without even realising, great to know other people also had that power.

Nádleehi is a social and, at times, ceremonial role in Diné (Navajo) culture - an "effeminate male" or "male-bodied person with a feminine nature". However, the nádleehi gender role is also fluid and cannot be simply described in terms of rigid gender binaries. Some Diné people recognize four general places on the gender spectrum: feminine woman, masculine woman, feminine man, and masculine man. Nádleehí may express their gender differently from day to day, or during different periods over their lifetimes, fulfilling roles in community and ceremony traditionally held by either women or men.

@@AlquimistEd I’m sorry; I don’t really understand what you’re trying to say. I agree that having feminine traits doesn’t make you less of a man, and having masculine traits doesn’t make you less of a woman. If I am a man, but have traits that have been traditionally associated with women, then by definition they must not be exclusively feminine traits, and vice versa. Traits, clothes, interests, etc. all seem to just be a grab bag anybody can choose from, regardless of gender or sex. The people who would deny this are willfully ignoring the reality that’s right in front of them. Edit: I think my confusion came from the feeling that you were saying that I personally felt that having one trait or another could make someone more or less masculine. Nuñez saw these 2S men had special roles in the tribe to prepare the dead for travel in after life. Nobody else would touch a dead body. These two-spirit men were thought to have special powers. They also performed tasks mostly done by females. Nuñez by studying the tribal life, became a trader, and a healer, and was able to walk away to find Spanish forces in Sinaloa.

I'm only around 3-5% Navajo, my grandmothers great grandmother was a Navajo who married a Dutchman and moved with him to South Africa, my highly racist forefathers tried to keep it secret and I only discovered it when I was doing a family tree thing for school, I've been told by most of my family to just forget about it, i look white so I'm white and no1 needs to know. I've tried to get in touch with some of the Navajo side of the family but they are very aloof and kinda rejected me, I'm so glad I found this channel as I've always wanted to learn more about my various ancestral cultures and it really hurt when they shut me down because I'm "too white" I know what most of my ancestors did was atrocious but I'm trying to be my own person and I want to learn, I am not my ancestors, I come from them and I owe my existence to them but I am my own person and I want to learn more and return to the natural way of life as much as I can, I want to be someone who my grandmothers great grandmother would be proud of, I want to return to my roots no matter how shallow they may grow

I’m almost in the same kind of boat like you, but I never went to the tribe that ancestors came from. Mainly because I live like 2 states away from it and I have no money to go there, but also out of the fear of rejection. I’m also “white skin” from what people like to call it. I would like to some day go up their and learn more about the tribe. Though I probably never will because of the fear of my skin color. I understand why Native Americans are mad at the “white skin” people from the past, but that doesn’t give them the right to be mean to the present “white skin” people, unless they are being racist then I perfectly understand. I have come from first hand experience. Let’s just say me and my family had to stay on a reservation with my grandmother because we had nowhere to live and my grandmother was kind enough to let us live with her until we got back on our feet. And let’s say they didn’t like us one bit just because of the color of our skin. At the time I never understand why they picked on us because I was only a kid back then. But as I got older I understand why they picked on us, but still didn’t give them any right to pick on our family just because of our skin color. I never would of done that to them. But I guess things happen for a reason, I suppose. So now if I am ever near a Native American person or even driving in a tribe. I just always feel guilty and severely nervous. Like they are going to do something to me. But I know they won’t, but thoughts like that always go threw my head like that, I’m also not blaming them for that for the way I feel. It’s just how my emotions react, and it also doesn’t help I easily paranoid and have high level anxiety. Sorry for the long comment, I just needed to get this off my chest. If you are reading this thank you for time. Have a wonderful day or night!!☀️🌕

This reminds me of the kiki-bouba phenomenon, where two shapes are presented (one is a smooth blob, the other is a jagged spikey figure) and the person is asked to label one as bouba, the other as kiki. The naming tendencies of people will line up a large percentage of the time, despite them being nonsense words. It's a testimony to how similarly our brains are wired. @@margaritakleinman5701 Asdzáán and Hastíín are equivalent to cis women and men. The Nádlee and the Dilbaa, are trans women and men; they are specifically the Changing Ones in Diné oral history. More than 150 distinct First Nations all across the North and Southern continents historically recognized gender diverse and intersex bodies in various ways for untold millennia, until the brutal invasion of missionaries and other colonizers in 1492 onwards. Nowadays in intertribal relations, they are collectively honored as their Two-Spirit relatives. The Diné people are among those respective First Nation for they have the Nádlee and Dilbaa in their mother tongue. In fact, there was Hastiin Klah (1867-1937) who was a Nádlee. Hastiin Klah was renowned for their knowledge in the traditional craft of weaving and for creating a unique sandpainting technique that is still practiced today by many Diné artisans.
