I think subs in the game are a bad idea, but then... I think a lot of what WG has done were bad ideas, and now I am uninstalled and watching... how about new maps, radar that doesn't see through islands. listening to the user base, ..oh never mind...

I have been on the Cod. Beautifully restored --a marvel of engineering at the time, but the dangers were real and her service is a testament to her officers and crew. We can all be proud of the people who designed and built her and those brave men who made the win in the Pacific a true American victory. Thank you people of Cleveland for all you have done to preserve our history. PS the narration was superbly done--thank you.!

If anyone can I recommend visiting this boat. She's in a gorgeous location right on the lakefront. And as the video states still in her wartime configuration. It's one of the reasons I made the trek to Cleveland to see her when I traveled the US East Coast 6 years ago

For years, the USS Cod sat at the downtown Cleveland berth. It wasn't until about 2014 or 15, that a friend and I made the visit to her, after hearing stories from a fellow employee of mine, who was a submariner during WW2, I needed to see one up close. It surely showed me the torture these guys had to suffer, just to be part of the crew. The tour of the Cod, opened my eyes to the fact, that all those young men were real honest to God heroes. It takes a special person to volunteer sub duty, and many did, ending up in one of the Oceans as their last resting place. God bless them all! Make a visit, it won't disappoint you.

My father (who was a crew member on the Cod) said that later in the war the Navy had sunk so many merchantmen that Japan started using Sampans (very shallow draft) to try and avoid submarine torpedo attack. He said they did have to come into much shallower waters than they liked but they destroyed dozens of Sampans with the deck gun. The down side was that they often took a beating from Japanese destroyers with the help of aircraft dropping flares on them since they could see them in the shallow water.
@PaulFarace
@PaulFarace 5 лет назад
Many veterans will interchange Junk and Sampan... but a Sampan is a small open boat used in rivers and in harbors. The much larger Junk is what Cod and her sisters were blasting in 1945. These things could be more than 100 feet long and carry 100 tons of cargo! Google USS Cod on RU-vid and you might see you father in Cod's color movie highlights of patrol 7!

7:10 -- At the beginning of the war, Japan had 4 million tons of shipping afloat. By the end of the war, U.S. submarines had sent 5 million tons of Japanese shipping to the bottom. So, think of it along the lines of... subs sank everything Japan had, along with an extra million that they built along the way.

When my daughter was attending school in Pittsburgh PA, we visited the USS Requin that is moored in the Ohio River at The Carnegie Science Center. The thing I remember best is the sleeping quarters. The bunks are stacked so close together that you would have to get out, turn around, and get back in if you wanted to roll over. On the other hand, the USS Nautilus moored in Groton CT at the Submarine Force Museum has more than enough room.

As a former submariner it was my job at battle stations to man and operate the TDC and WOG (weapons order generator). Once a MK 48 wire guided torpedo was launched it was my job to steer it and send other commands as ordered. It was truly amazing to watch all the dials move and "hunt" for a new solution when I made a manual input change. Those were the days when everything was strictly analog. And no I haven't forgotten that I have officially "forgotten" everything I knew about those things. Truly genius!

When you are under a depth charge attack there is very little you can do. The skipper can try maneuvering the boat to try and escape but you HAVE to take the beating. Great video!!! After watching Part 1, just could not wait for Part 2. Am from northeast Ohio, roughly 45 miles east of Cleveland, and have visited this sub a few times. Living way out in Kansas, always great to see the skyline of Cleveland and the waters of Lake Erie - no matter how briefly!!!1

People this has nothing to do with the weapon of war. What the most important thing is, the men who use it. That thing and only that is what is true. Anyone can throw a rock and kill someone, it's how those men and women are raised that makes any difference on any outcome. This story is new to me and I'm proud to know what, where and why these things came about.

Wahoo was also the first sub to get a “down the throat” hit in history, and also pretty much changed submarine warfare. It’s a shame she never sailed out of the Sea of Japan

The TDC could be a fun add on to the subs if they get into the game. Like a CV's torpedo bombers, the sub needs to stay still at periscope or surface depth for optimum accuracy. It should help differentiate the class from DD ships too who can cart along at speed and dump torps reasonably well. Note that could is the operative word, it will need testing.
