One of my favorite tools, Portfolio Visualizer, just launched a new design. In this video, I'll show you how to navigate the changes. Unfortunately, one change is to limit the amount of backtesting data you have access to in the free version. I'll show you a free alternative.

Rob's the best! I was just at PV last night trying to use it as I have for months now and thought I just didn't know how to navigate it. Good to know I hadn't lost my mind, but hugely disappointed to lose such a great free tool. No way I'll spend $360 a year for it, not even close.

I have a paid subscription, I noticed the changes last night 5/17/24. The format is a bummer, one of the greatest things about PV was the simplicity. I noticed tonight right before I watch this video that there was a link back to the LEGACY version. I’m not sure it was there before. It’s highlighted in blue. Thanks Bob for all you do.

Hey Rob. Thanks for the video. I just stumbled onto this change about an hour ago. Very disappointing. I loved the classic version - very utilitarian. The new has a more modern look, but feels rather clunky. It won't earn my subscription dollars at that price.

Looks like you can't buy just a month. "Billed annually" $360/year is way too much for an individual investor. I get that they need to have income and they have expenses for the database, etc. But it's like a sidewalk lemonade stand selling for $10 a glass. Be too greedy and you get nothing. $5 a month would be acceptable but not $30. And 10 year backtest is useless. That's way too short. Darn.

Testfolio is great but unfortutately, there are a lot of funds where the data is not showing correctly on the chart. For example, VTRIX shows an immediate drop on Jan 1, 1988, which is clearly a stock split or capital gain distribution that is not being accounted for.

Is it just me, or do these two tools give different results? I've run a few test portfolios over short durations, and the numbers don't match up. For example, VTI from 2020 through 2023 has a CAGR of 11.45% in Visualizer, and 11.27% in Testfolio. I've been trying to work out why, but no luck so far. A man with two watches.....
@davidanderson6532
@davidanderson6532 26 дней назад
Actually, running just 2023 for VTI, Portfolio Visualizer matches the Morningstar performance data for 2023 (26.05%), and Testfolio is reporting a bit higher (27%). Not sure if it's user error or the tool.
@Peter-iq9pp
@Peter-iq9pp 25 дней назад
There is definitely an issue with TestFolio. Its backtest results do differ. I have calculated the backtest on a couple samples using the annual total return as noted by Morningstar or Yahoo Finance and the CAGR is consistent with Portfolio Visualizer but not Testfolio - not sure why?

Why can't the big financial institutions subsidize a free one? The 5 big banks and Vanguard, Fidelity and Blackrock. Or just one of them and they could get people interested in their company by offering it.

The tool leveled the playing field for the DIY investor. Big banks/brokers want you to pay a percentage of your assets to manage them.
@canyonoverlook9937
@canyonoverlook9937 25 дней назад
@@dobiesj Vanguard could provide it. I don't think it would cost too much. Portfolio Visualizer provided it for free for years Or Vanguard could charge a small fee.
@dobiesj
@dobiesj 25 дней назад
@@canyonoverlook9937 I seriously doubt Vanguard has any desire to offer such a tool because most of their clients just buy a few of their funds. Vanguard isn't the broker of choice when it comes to buying individual stocks, options, or shorting/hedging the market. There's a reason why brokers don't offer these kind of tools, they want to create and manage your portfolio for an ongoing percentage of assets managed.

With the new "Asset Allocation", PV ditched the table views, which made portfolio-to-portfolio comparisons super easy, and eliminated all the sub allocations like growth/blend/value/emerging/etc.. Why would they lobotomize their old interface like that? Confounding.

Approximately 45/30/25 US Equities / Gold / Mid or Long UST. Re-balance semi-annually. There I saved you hundreds of backtesting hours ;) 9-9.5% CAGR, max 20% drawdown, since 1972. If you don't want to hold bonds in inflationary times, you can do 60/40 SPY/Gold, but it has 27% max drawdown. If you want more alpha, 14-16% CAGR, with only 2% more max DD, add in 5% BTC. It's now an asset class on its own many still neglect. Financial freedom tastes good. (Disclaimer: Your goal might be different than mine. 20% DD might be too much for you. My goal is returns similar to the stock market with no more than 20% DD).

The new web page design is a big step backwards from the old design. It looks like it is aimed at newbies who like pretty screens instead of compact data presentation. As if newbies are going to pay $360 a year for this. Oh, yuck! It doesn't have a scroll bar on the results. It's just one looooooong screen. You have to use the mouse scroll wheel to move up and down. Or the sidebar to jump around. Terrible design.
