Tapping requires less effort than swiping. It also has the benefit of not spreading the oils on greasy fingers all over the screen.

For past few weeks I have switched from buttons to gestures on my galaxy. Only irritating gesture is swiping from the edge to go back. If an app is open which involves horizontal scrolling. Or the phone is in landscape mode, then a simple back function becomes a nightmare. Every time I feel that I have mastered this gesture, I am proven wrong. I will probably go back to buttons for sheer speed, and reliability, of the back functionality alone. A huge advantage of the gestures over buttons is reduced accidental taps. However, accidental back gesture is way more irritating and easily possible when trying to scroll horizontally.

I think a floating joystick like button would be a good middleway, especially for big phones.

That’s a flaw of the android ecosystem. Since iOS hasn’t had a back button from the start the swipe to go back gesture is built in to every app
@GoogleHelpYou

Disadvantages of full screen 1) Swiping back can be misinterpreted as swiping right app action 2)The keyboard became sunk. 3)Lesser "button" options to choose from Advantages 1)Wider screen

not really wider more like longer screen. in landscape most apps will hide the buttons anyways. most games and video players in landscape work in full screen mode which hide the buttons so guestures are really useless.

Been using the navigation gesture but went back to the 3 button, i guess it looks more cleaner than having to see those 3 button but sometimes it doesn't really work. For example, the swipe to go back, instead of going back the screen will close the app itself and glitches out. (i'm using a Android 11 with 8gb ram) For faster and more simple, go to 3 button navigation. For clean UI, go for gesture navigation.

@@Inspire2risethey cause fatigue for me and cause pain in my hands so can never recommend those. Also they hold back app development witg the swipe from right or left to go back. they could have left that to app developer so that they can decide whether to switch in app tabs or go back. also the guesture to open multitask is trash.

I was using navigation gestures, but shifted to buttons because of its functionality. Mainly, we can assign functions to those buttons, like lock screen, take back to previous task, etc.

The thing I like about buttons is that I can see what is going on. With gestures I keep forgetting what each one does because I don't get the same kind of meta view so the outcomes feel a bit random.

The last LG I bought has 2-button navigation and I like it a lot more than that single button. The LG also allows you to have up to 5 buttons at the bottom of the screen AND arrange them how you want them.

@chaugulepankaj
@chaugulepankaj Год назад
And now I'm back to 3 button navigation. 😅 Mainly due to these problems. 1. Accidental back while swiping photos left right in gallery. 2. Can't open side menus of many apps. I've to touch at the top left corner to access these menus. Earlier, with 3 button navigation, these menus are accessible with just left swipe on the screen.
@subhajitpaul3026
@subhajitpaul3026 Год назад
@@chaugulepankaj yes there are some good bits and some bad. I have also faced the problem 1 many times. Also while using chrome going through multiple links one after another becomes painful while coming back. But the plus point may be is the accessibility of back gesture anywhere on the edges. Bcoz phones these days are way bigger.
@chaugulepankaj
@chaugulepankaj Год назад
@@subhajitpaul3026 Right. Android should give the option to place the back button gesture anywhere on the edge that too with additional option of choosing it on left edge, right edge or both.

i've been testing for a week using gestures, and it uses approx 50mA more than button.. so if you have for example 4000mAh battery then it will drain 1.25% battery per hour (1.6% for 3000mAh / 1% for 5000mAh)

Double tap on the recent apps button and switch between the 2 last apps you used. This is massive for productivity. Buttons for speed are the way to go.

I had to use iPhone for 1 year. Not gonna lie I still prefer navigation buttons, but I did hope android could provide combination of it where I could use buttons but still be able to swipe back. As for navigation gesture on android. I do like when I can swipe on the right side of the screen but it feels unintuitive (since I would expect to go forward with this swipe). In the end I ended up using buttons My android phone is relatively old (I think it's has just android 10 installed). I did like gestures that ask to swipe up (for both backwards and homescreen) depending on position on screen but the point of such gestures is unknown since you need to swap from the places where these buttons would be located, so this is essentially just buttons but with additional movenebt of finger required (you touch button and then need to move it up instead of just touching button) P. S. Commenting this video. Navigation gestures also require some accuracy since area from which you need to swipe cannot be very big so it doesn't interfere with other functions like scroll gesture.
@outdoorquest3005
@outdoorquest3005 2 года назад
Navigation gesture is not about the swipe, it's more about using the whole screen for display. And not waste space on the screen for navigation keys.
@ojgfhuebsrnvn2781
@ojgfhuebsrnvn2781 Год назад
Really? Most phones have screens bigger than your face and you want to save that 1 cm? Also wouldn't you need to complain about RU-vid app then? If I don't watch fullscreen then I see little video on the top of the screen and rest 70% of the screen are filled with ads or comments. I really don't like iphones (after using them for a while) but at least I could click fullscreen and don't rotate my phone (it will just center video in vertical axis).
@outdoorquest3005
@outdoorquest3005 Год назад
@@ojgfhuebsrnvn2781 we have bigger screen because we wanted bigger screens (also why we have smaller bezels and infinity displays for same reasons). Apart from the ~1 cm space nav buttons occupy, it's also the convenience of swiping from the edge at either side while holding the phone at any position and place, instead of contorting my hands and fingers to reach that particular area at the bottom of the phone. It boils down to our preferences but once you get the hang of nav gesture, nav buttons feel ancient. (Also I like swipe texting)
@ojgfhuebsrnvn2781
@ojgfhuebsrnvn2781 Год назад
@@outdoorquest3005 i did use gestures for some time and had to use gestures when i used iphone. Still, buttons are more comfortable. Yes i understand that it is a matter of preference. Big screens are ok, i just meant that the space occupied by buttons compared to whole screen is negligible so this argument isnt really good one.
