Anvi Ravi from Krshala Dance Theatre demonstrates the Navaras.
Nava meaning nine and rasas meaning emotions or moods. These nine moods form the basics of various expressions in the abhinaya repertoire of Kathak.
Compositions like a thumri in Kathak use the Shringar Rasa while a Shiva Stuti use Raudra Rasa or Shantha Rasa and so on so forth.
Depending on the nature of the song & the character being depicted, the intensity of the mood can be showcased in a range from very subtle to very loud.
The Navarasas are integral to all Indian classical dance forms including Kathak.
As mentioned in the Abhinaya Darpan
The nine rasas are - 1. Shringara (Love) 2. Haasya (Laughter) 3. Karuna (Compassion) 4. Raudra (Anger) 5. Veera (Courage) 6.Bhayanaka (Fear) 7.Bhibhastya(Disgust) 8.Adbhutha (Surprise) 9. Shaantha (Tranquility)
