Can I ask as someone who is currently going through the process of join the Navy as a BM, is it common for people to get seasick? It's something I'm really worried about but I don't want it to be something that stops me from joining. I don't wanna be feeling sick all the time 😅 I have no one to ask these questions to sorry😅😅

@@michelledavo7055yeah mate it effects everyone on different levels. I’ve seen the biggest bloke on the ship curled up in the floor because it was that severe and Ive seen it not effect anyone for a whole 6 month deployment. Don’t be too worried it depends how your body responds to the motion. There’s a heap of different ways to help it or keep it off. You’ll work out what works for you.

@@Buddy89538 hey thank you for the reply! Yeah I'm a little worried. I've never gotten sick sick when on a boat so I hope I'll be ok, I've heard that they supply seasickness tablets to reduce the effects so hope that helps. Don't wanna be a bother but got any tips for first starting out? 😅🤣

BM is one of the most physically taxing jobs in the Navy. It's mostly outdoors work and you often end up working really long days. Most of those in the Navy won't be able to do such physical work. You also get real dirty. Don't expect a whole lot of respect from other rates or officers. I respected them because I saw how hard they worked. I had a master chief on my ship who spent 45 years as a boatsmate! This old guy was as tough as nails. He never smiled and he was not a loud guy but boy could he work his tail off. He never took leave and eventually the Navy forced him to retire. One day as joke I asked him if he was at Pearl Harbor during the attack. Nope he said, I had to sneak into the Navy at age 14, but I was at the Battle of Midway! .... Holy cow!

My dad retired from the navy as a Boatswains Mate... He served on cruisers, skippered a tug in Gitmo Bay navy base, missile destroyer, etc. He always seemed to be the "go to guy" on any ship he served. He loved it. When he retired..he got a job at a ship year as a "Rigger". As a kid, I had no idea what that was. But he loved the work.

USN Veteran (BM2) 80-88: I enjoyed the various tasks that I was assigned. It's not a good idea choosing a path at the time of recruitment. The best time to make a decision is after class 'A' training school. I was signed up for HM but chose BM and went to my first ship. That started my qualification process. We had fun on the chair over the side....painting the numbers. LOL Thank you for doing this. o7

As a member of the Gator Navy (USS Tarawa LHA-1) in the late 70's, early 80's, I wasn't too keen when I first came aboard. I had dropped from ET "A" school and wanted to go OJT. Little did I know, when I arrived on board, I wouldn't be doing my OJT as an ET, but as a BM. Essentially, they handed me a swab (mop), a needle gun and a paint roller...LOL. Not too long afterward, I was asked if I wanted to joined "Boats" division (DB03), and I jumped at the chance. I went to Assault Boat Cox'n school at Coronado Island to learn to handle LCM's, and had the time of my life. After a year or so of LCM's, I was assigned my own LCPL-2, that hung in the starboard davit. I was the ready lifeboat cox'n and that's where I spent my 1A, Unrep and port entry and exit evolutions, as well as being put in the water for MO drills and actuals. My watches as BMOW (after doing my time as lookout, messenger, helm and leehelm) was also exciting, as I was always involved in some way with all of the ships operations. If I were young enough and healthy enough, I'd go back and do it all again. Thanks for your video!

Pro: you do some really unique stuff that no other rate gets to do other than flight ops if you're on a aircraft carrier as well as there are a lot of career opportunities with the qualifications that you get in the BM rate. obviously i know that a woman would have to work a lot harder to be as "physically capable" as a man, but like are there like things that are like super super heavy that youre doing on your own or something

This rate absolutely blows, and is literally made for folks that do not want any better in life or are lazy and complacent to learn new things that actually will propel you in life when you get it. If you want to do worthless things, like sweeping water of the deck when it's raining. This is for you.

@@JonnnyFive backbone my ass, I was a BM3 because of some actions I made in my life and I couldn’t pick another rate besides CS. We ain’t no back bone, we do the hard manual shit that takes no brains and that no one wants to do. You can’t sit here and tell me sanding, needlegunning, painting, doing dumb shit for hours on end is backbone. No man, this is literally just a janitorial rate that is meant for idiots.
