This is beyond messed up. There needs to be change. Just because someone has a condition like this doesn't mean they aren't fully capable as many who are born this way are just as capable as those who don't have it. This man is very capable of joining ROTC as so many people who were able to be in the military with a condition like this, they did not ask to be born with autism or any other disorder. I hope in the future they will consider allowing people to enlist or commission with these types of conditions as a country is always going to need soliders.

However on the flip side of the coin being a veteran myself i wouldnt want to be part of an organization that wouldnt have me to begin with. And i seriously question the motives of those who would at this point in my life given the nature of whats going on and it will continue to get worse. Keep him safe and protected we will need him in many more ways people could imagine if things get bad. We need brilliance. They only want bodies at this point.

I was trying to get in as well. It shouldn’t be a disqualification for him. People who were diagnosed with asd should be able to serve as long as the conditions don’t interfere with handling stressful situations.

My dreams were crushed recently. I had paperwork on my autism that I was diagnosed with it at 5 years old. But that was thirteen years ago and I have moved past it since 6th grade. Taking a normal education. I was an A/B student and I was in ROTC for 3 years of my highschool. I was in contact with my recruiter for a year but until he found out about the autism. He just turned me down because I was still diagnosed with autism the only thing I do is I shake my hand when I get excited. It was unbelievable for me that I wanted to do this since eighth grade and I'm just turned down like that. Hell I even had a doctor said I was all clear. From my disabilitys........... Unbelievable

I have an advice for you. Take revenge! Especially on the women in the military. Women in the military is one of the reasons that autists get rejected from there. Remember when there were no women in the military, when women did not have rights? There was less bullying in schools, etc. It's because women, who are shallow beings are getting power and are allowed to be in the military that this happens. Women have nothing to do in the military! They are stupid shallow beings. They have no understanding and can't appreciate the intellectual, something that autists are good at. Women often don't like autistic guys because of their fucked up psyche. And because many women are in the military, they create rules that keep autistic people out from there. It's so unfair that stupid bitches get in there and not you. You are much better than them. You are the one who deserve this place, but those women took it away from you! Autistic people are some of the smartest people in the world. They could be very good for defence industry, cyber, intelligence, etc. but those stupid women don't understand that. I advice you to start yelling at, cursing women in the military. Write harassing messages to them. That's what they deserve. And join incels.is and learn the truth about how the world works, lookism, hate against autistic people, women, etc. Then you will understand a lot.

I tried enlisting and I was denied the U.S. Military is very discriminating towards their applicants idc what they say by turning down applicants without due process is not only discriminatory it’s actually hurting the military itself. Even if ya lie up front and they find out they choose to either keep you or prosecute ya if they want. Yes it maybe extra paperwork, but at least ya ad another future soldier, airman, marine, sailor, coast guardian, and spaceman to your ranks.

I just graduated High School with a 3.7/3.8 GPA. I've also had high-functioning autism, and also it's my dream to join the Military as an officer in the Navy. I've participated in the Navy JROTC program in High School for six semesters and reached the rank of Ensign (O-1) before graduating. And During my Junior year, it is a State law in my state for ALL JUNIORS TO TAKE THE ACT. The school told me I could not take the ACT because I was in the OCS (Occupation Course Studies). It's kinda like special-ed but for kids who are allowed to take higher levels of classes, you need to take OCS classes while in High School. Anyway, back to what I was saying, since I was in the OCS, the school would not allow me to take the ACT, I talked to Priceable and Vice Priceable, and they both agreed that I could take the ACT boot camp during school. Now keep in mind I thought since they allowed me to the boot camp I thought since the school allowed me to take the Boot Camp that I would be allowed to take the ACT, however, they still had no intention of allowing me to take the ACT, they just wanted me to shut up and moved on, so as I went inline they told me that I was blacklisted and needed to take a different test. I can't remember the test name, but it's for Community College. (Side Note: I want to take the ACT because I also wanted an ROTC Scholarship.) The Test was very easy it was 5th-9th grade Math, however, I still regret this decision I decided to just click random answers as I was still quite mad. (Also I could still do Community College even without taking the test in fact, the college never asks for my test results) I got a 12% on the test and the school told me that needed to work on basic math in order to take the ACT, which is why I regret not caring. And one more thing I've recently taken the ASVAB and got a 69, however since I have autism I can't serve but the Recruiter told me that there is no such thing as a Waiver for Autism, which is kinda true. However, for High-functioning Autism guys like myself, you need an evaluation from your Doctor. For me, I'm currently working on it with my doctor, and I'm taking the ACT in September. And by the way, the evaluation process is mainly wanting to know if you're independent or if you rely on someone for daily tasks if you're prone to anxiety, and if you don't take behavioral pills or anxiety meds. That's all, I just wanted to get my story out there along with Tory. Thank you for reading this and never take no for an answer.

the thing about recruiters is that they tend to lie to their applicants because they want easy numbers for them to reach their quota. if they think a condition is too much for them they will lie and say no. I was diagnosed with autism at age 3 and the waiver authorities chose to process me for a waiver. if a waiver for that condition does not exist then why would they choose to process me for one? and I am not trying to tell you that you're wrong but you can't always believe what a recruiter says especially if they only are looking for easy numbers

While it is unfortunate that this young man may not be able to fulfill his dreams via an ROTC scholarship, the Navy made the correct decision here. Facts have to outweigh emotions and this is a blatant emotional appeal to people with a soft spot in their heart when they need to be using the reason in their brain. An ROTC scholarship means this young man would eventually be commissioned as an officer and that, in turn, means he would be responsible for the lives of the men and women serving under his authority. I would not want any of my sons or daughters serving under such an individual. The military is a stressful environment (30 year veteran speaking now) and there is no place for someone with these types of limitations, officer or enlisted, in the ranks. Fulfilling someone's dreams just to make them feel better is not worth placing the lives of others at risk and that is exactly what the Navy would be doing here if the those responjsible for enforcing DoDMERB requirements did not do their job.

He'd be a liability. In actual combat he'd also be placing more lives at risk than being a help. People are definitive about him being able to be employed by the military, but would they feel the same toward people with epilepsy, bipolar, or some other medical condition? No. He's not special. He can do the same work that he wants to do for the military as a civilian though.

I don't have a judgment to make here, because I'm truly not qualified. With his GPA, though, I imagine he can write his own ticket outside of the military. I know that's not what he wants, though, and I do feel terrible for him. I hate to see a young person's hopes dashed, especially when they've worked so hard to attain a huge goal.

Typically, the military views pre existing conditions like autism, asthma, gastrointestinal problems, etc as a potential liability when out in the field. It's really more of a safety issue than anything. It sucks in this kid's situation but instead of going into the military to work on planes, maybe he can become an engineer to learn how to build planes

At this point in time i agree with the decision not to accept him,,,everything at this time is being geared up for what will be the worst war in history. The training is different and more physically and mentally challenging than in past years.. If anything was to happen to this young man the attitudes and opinions will be drastically changed into anger and bitterness and the questions of why was he accepted and why wasn't he given more protection will be the case.. You have people that are being accepted today with no issues that can't handle the physical and mental training thus will fail in battle which could have a ripple effect in those who are fighting with him,,,give deep and honest consideration to what's being asked here before criticizing the military for they're decision..
