Marines assigned to Weapons Co., Battalion Landing Team (BLT) 3/2, 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), are transported, via landing craft, air cushion (LCAC), from the USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) to a simulated raid mission and back, near Onslow Beach, N.C. The 26th MEU is conducting Composite Training Unit Exercise, the final phase of a six-month pre-deployment training program. The 26th MEU operates continuously across the globe, providing the president and unified combatant commanders with a forward-deployed, sea-based quick reaction force. The MEU is a Marine Air-Ground Task Force capable of conducting amphibious operations, crisis response and limited contingency operations. Produced by U.S. Marine Corps motion media. Video by Cpl. Oh man now this really takes me back. Noise, salt, jet fuel, and more noise. My station was on the fantail. LSD-49 1996-1998.

I as well as my Marines got sick as hell riding in that small closet on that LCAC. 1993 Camp Lejeune. Ill never forget that awful 30 minute ride back to Onslow Beach.

There is honestly a lot of room for error. It’s basically an impenetrable rubber balloon on the bottom. You can bump into anything you want really. Just have to get it in the ballpark…….

I used to load the IFF crypto on those early every morning before LCAC ops when I was on mid watch. I think there were 3 of them that could fit in the well deck. It would be fun to visit the ship again someday.

Great footage! It one thing we will never be able to accurately bring to live in our model-boats and hovercrafts.... It´s great to watch them fly in that slow,.. I alway thought they might use a bit more speed to overcome the ramp... but the risk of crashing prevents this? Thanks a lot for uploading this great footage! Holger from Subwaterfilm

The ship ballasts down to so that there is 0-6" of water at the edge. As you can see the wave action was pretty high then so yea, slow and easy. What looks like a little bump could cause some extensive damage to those.

the noise must be unbelievable. if i was the enemy the tanks wouldn't need to get of off i'd run away just because of the noise. must be awesome to be in the ship as the leave and get back on.

Incorrect. These are operated by the Navy enlisted. But they need to be E7 or higher. These guys have close to 20 years in the service. Definitely not teenagers.

Actually, most of the craftmasters that I have met have been chiefs and senior chiefs in their 30s or 40s. The coxswain and engineers were mostly junior enlisted, but they were pretty much in a so-called apprenticeship to be craft masters themselves. This is a special program in the navy that requires heavy physical and educational aptitude screening. I know this, because I am applying for it as my next duty.

@@sempergumby1276 Not necessarily. I was an E-6 after 6 years. We had a Chief E7 he had barely 8 years service. It depends on you're specialty. These crafts are normally manned by GSE's/M's. Gas turbine Technicians. If you enlist for the 6 yrs. program by the time you finish your A School (6 months ) plus bootcamp (2 months) its automatic E-4. Add another year to get to E-5. Another 3 to got to E-6. Barely 5 years in you're already at E-6. I was 25 and was already an E-6. I was 23 years old when I became an instructor for the Gas Turbine School in Great Lakes, IL. The Navy offered me to be in these program as part of my reenlistment. Unfortunately they close the US bases in my home country the Philippines. I always wanted to be stationed in the Philippines so I left the Navy.
