From a young age, Maryland native Kaylene Carter was impressed with the discipline and overall excellence demanded by the U.S. Navy. After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy, she served as a surface warfare officer and was deployed to the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom during the Iraq War. While on the destroyer, Kaylene observed the work of hospital corpsmen, and was inspired to pursue a medical career at the Stanford University School of Medicine.
