Germany was a country of 70 million people back in 1939 and about 10% of the population were members of the leader's party. History often talks about these people who dragged Germany into its dictator's war but what about the common people of Germany? What they saw? What they went through with their families and how they had to live their life? Here is The Untold Story of WW2 Through German POV!

Hitler did not ‘drag’ Germany into WW2. Germans were quite enthusiastic about getting a ‘second chance’ and became even more so after the early victories. This is a good historical view of the ‘home front’ in Germany for many citizens, but it is dicey because the reality of how ardently Germans followed Hitler is not highlighted sufficiently. This was not a normal society and serves as a warning for all advanced societies.

good to remember that the Nazis never won more than 37% of the vote before they seized power in 1933 and even then it was 47% before they outlawed other parties. All nations that have had an expansionist culture have 'dirty laundry' they would rather not talk about and no question the Nazis took it to a whole new level. Most Germans felt they were blamed for WW1 when in truth the Russians, Austro Hungarians and Serbians were just as capable. That's a lot of resentment that can be channelled and the march on Capital Hill is proof of that irrespective if one is a Trump support or not. Do nations go enthusiastically to war, no not really, but its a narrative that is repeated based on propaganda.

Totally false. From the start of the war in September 1939, the population was not enthusiastic. It was only after the conquest of France in the summer of 1940 that they were overjoyed.

My neighbors in the 80s were a German family that came to America after the war, he told stories of his youth as a Nazi Boy scout (Hitler youth) and how at first the German people's loved him, his brother who lived down the street was in the SS and fought on the Russian front, SS officers and soldiers dear to Hitler were sent back to Germany when the war got out of hand saving them from capture by the Russians, one thing was clear they were proud to be here in America, they had a love for this country that most Americans just take for granted.

My wifes grandfather was a kid during the war in Germany. He talked about "Bread soup" it was stale bread to hard to eat that they would make into soup. Sounds disgusting but I guess was better than nothing. And one time they found a bunch of rabbits. They feasted. It was not easy for any civilian during that time, especially the kids.

That doesn't sound accurate, there are many books which say German civilians had plenty to eat during the war. The entire occupied European continent was plundered to feed the homeland. It was during the First World War when hundreds of thousands of German civilians starved to death.

"General Bloodless" is a name that was unknown to me so far. Bread with sawdust was actually a phenomenon of the hunger years in WWI. Coffee from acorns, too. Ersatzkaffee was made of malt and chicory. You can still buy it today. The taste isn't that bad. If I would type the original German slang for it, it would get deleted, but only because the bot would misunderstand it. I still grew up with malt coffee in the 1960s. On Sundays we had real coffee, even the kids already. I guess that's why we never got addicted to cola instead. A very common substitute for other oil seeds were beech nuts.
@ArtyMcMuffin
@ArtyMcMuffin 6 месяцев назад
Can't say for the rest but I agree with malt and chicory, it is hard to describe but it is somewhat close to coffee. The one I've got didn't had caffeine so it could have been a plus if you wanted one in the evening. Not a bad taste but it is particular.

Germany rationed strictly.. off that didn't apply to the higher Nazis. Goering enjoyed expensive meals in the best restaurants .. great British had rationing too in ww2, as all imported goods had to be shipped through U-boat infested waters. Ppl understood this. Some items were still rationed until end of 1940s. So much for being a victorious nation..

The average German civilian had enough to eat during the war. Its an absolute myth that German civilians were starving during WWII. Read the Gotz Aly book "Hitler's Beneficiaries". The Wehrmacht plundered the entire occupied continent of Europe to feed the German homeland. German civilians were actually more hungry after WWII in 1946-1947 than during the war itself.

"General bloodless": I never heard this in Germany; I wonder where he has got this from. Ersatzkaffee (e.g. the "Kathreiner" brand) was widely used in lower to middle income families, as coffee was, other than in the US, rather expensive still for many years after the war, and reserved for sundays. Food rationing during WW II was carried out by local administration, "Lebensmittelämter". The SS or the Gestapo to my knowledge certainly weren't responsible for organizing the rationing. Food shortage during the war was not as bad as in the last years of WW I, where starvation had been widespread. Although after the end of the war, especially in the very cold winter of 1945/46, it became severe.

Germany invaded Poland to get back the better part of Prussia and because Hitler already tested the waters with Czecheslovakia in the Sudetenland as well as the annexation of Austria, not a single one of the signers of the Treaty of Versailles did anything about it till it was too late. And if you want to talk about some "whataboutism" let's discuss what Germans did to the Polish, Ukrainians, Russians. How about the mass murder of an ENTIRE VILLAGE in France. And you're upset about some Poles in border towns trying to do what exactly to the Germans?
