Dragic was mad serious…. Luka and the interviewer laughed, but Dragic didn’t blink. You could see Luka face change immediately. He meant it, and that prediction has aged like the finest of wines…. Props to Luka! I’m from the US, but game recognize game, regardless of where you’re from….

Once had an interview with one of Real Madrid’s coach and Dragic. It was for our shipping company’s foundation for basketball scholars in Japan and Philippines. When Mr. Choi asked Goran how is your mentality about how to carry and lead the team to victory he said “No, no, no, the one who does the carrying and leading is at school. You can ask the team, we say the same”. I remember those words like it was yesterday everytime I realize Dragic was talking about Luka. This was way back May 2017.

I really like that statement. It holds true across so many fields. Great race car drivers don’t move faster than the other guys, but they’re more in command of their cars. They’re more familiar with the track, and they’re able to anticipate a split-second faster than the other guys. The result, they don’t react to the race/game, they dictate it. That’s what Luka’s got. All the skill, plus an innate understanding of how the game unfolds. He’s different. He could bring fundamentals back to the forefront.

The Portland thing made more sense. They had Drexler at the time, who isn’t Jordan of course, but he was still a great guard. well compared to how fast most nba players are, he is slow. But I totally agree with your second point, it's not that he CAN'T go faster, he certainly can. It is that he plays so slow BY CHOICE, in order to read the defence, because that takes time, you cant do it automatically. Then he has a whole arsenal in his skillset, either to shoot or pass the ball. He has the step back, the fadeaway, he can attack the rim for a lay up or a dunk (yes ha can dunk too, anyone who has seen him during his first years knows it). Combine that with his ridiculous court vision. He can find any teammate at any time any place, doesn't matter where you are or if they guard you, he can pass you the ball. And man what a passer he is... I ve never seen anyone that has perfected the no look pass more than him, only Lebron and Jokic can compare. The only flaw in his game was that he wasn't playing defence. This season, he 's done that too! All the legends in the video are correct, sky is the limit for him. Especially if he gets really fit...

I think Luka exposes one of the same things that Bird did that nobody likes to talk about: Having good "handles" is one of the most overrated skills in basketball. By that I mean most people's perception of what having good handles is. You doing 20 between the leg dribbles and spins before your shot doesn't mean jack squat if the defender never moved. Proper reading and timing of your defender's movement by baiting them into the rhythm you want will create far spacing than you simply doing a bunch of street ball moves on autopilot. This is why there are tons of guys with so called "amazing" handles that are sitting on the bench because they can't score. They have a set routine of moves and they just fire them off without actually reading how the defender is reacting to them. Anyone who has ever sparred in boxing or martial arts against an experienced old timer will know exactly what I'm talking about. There are old dudes who are dramatically slower than you that will still absolutely piece you up. How do they do it? They use you against yourself. They don't need to be fast if they read your movements and bait you into moving the way they want you to and then having the timing to hit you when you're off balance.

That statement resonates with me because, I'm 63yrs old and have been religiously watching the game,since age 12yrs old,plus I played. Many are born but only a few are chosen. In terms of the hours being put in to develop his game (if this could be somehow measured), the number is probably mind blowing. Some people don't really understand that you cannot be great without putting into the work and just calling it talent. I’m not a basketball guy. All these guys talk bball jargon, and I’m lost. But when they talk about Luka controlling the game, setting up plays, and seeing the play before it develops, even I know what they’re talking about. It’s like when he gets the ball up top, you can watch him choreograph the play. He’s got such a command of the offensive side that he makes the other team look like they were in on it the whole time. And then he can score 70+, or he can get his team involved and still score 35-50. Basketball just has never been fun for me to watch, personally, but watching Luka compose his symphony is art. And I can appreciate art.

Luka and Mavs deserves this year championship, their ladder to the playoffs is hard as hell than Celtics. Luka plays better than anyone on Celtics and through his year in Mavs he actually carried that franchised unlike Tatum who needed 3 ex allstar player (Brown, Holiday and Pozingis) no one saying it was like a GSW 2016-2019 where durant plays in Warriors.
@leonyses2887

Mavs offense and defense are better than the Celtics since Gafford was put in the starting lineup. However in the playoffs it often comes down to the matchups. This is what makes it a question.

Playing in the Euroleague at 16, let alone meaningfully contributing to your team at that age, was a dead giveaway that Luka was special. On his way to the 2018 Euroleague Final Four I watched him destroy my Panathinaikos in games 2, 3 and 4 and then win Final Four MVP (and Euroleague MVP) at 19 years old, which is unheard of. No drama, no problems, just pure talent and hard work. At the same time NCAA supposed NBA prospects were trying to get under the table money from their colleges and convince their coaches to play or get the ball more to make their stats look better. There was never an actual comparison between him and the other prospects. Only so-called "analysts" for the US who only "analyze" for views live on TV didn't understand that. No one can help you if you cannot understand that a professional league of grown men is overall better than a bunch of kids thrown in with top NBA prospects that get preferential treatment due to a stupid rule to keep the money flowing into the NCAA. It's a business. Don't defend it, it is just stupid.

No offense to Gil who was trying to be complimentary, but qualifying it as "Best European Player" is ridiculous. He has better numbers than LeBron EVERY YEAR so far. On top of that, he has 2 Conference Finals and a NBA Final in one less year than LeBron. He is right there with MJ in all the playoff records, except his passing and rebounding numbers are way higher than Michael's (offset by Jordan's defensive prowess). If he continues to improve his 3pt% every year until it gets over 40%, he's going to have a realistic shot at 40ppg if he wants. He already has the game and is unguardable.....the only thing he lacks is getting his FG% to over 50% and his 3pt% to 41%-42%.

A kid born into the sport with a father that's a pro, has always had the edge and never sees it as difficult, it's just a game for them. Luka is not as slow as people think, and he is a lot stronger than people think. Sure, he will never be the type of player who is super athletic, but his size, body type and playing style is deceptive. He is sneaky athletic in exactly the areas where he needs to be. Change of direction, spins, stop and go moves.

Boston has its hands full next week. They do have some very good defenders, but Luca is just another kind of animal. This is going to be interesting. If Boston is able to slow him down it will be due to Jrue Holiday. Jrue is a former champion and very disciplined defender. Nobody better, but he will have his hands full for sure.
