It's kind of unreal how many future Hall-of-Famers played in that game: Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Dennis Johnson, Robert Parish, Dr. J, Moses Malone, Charles Barkley, Bobby Jones, and Maurice Cheeks. Imagine watching an NBA game where 9 out of 10 players on the court are Hall-of-Famers. That's incredible.

@dan27052 4 месяца назад
@@antav9371 see here is problem with your analogy, you fail to consider why bird is yelling at doc in the first place, gee I wonder, oh yeah, it because doc TACKLED Bird intentionally during the play. Bird went over to Doc to yell at him for tackling him, doc yelled back at bird, bird grabs doc, doc goes apeshit crazy. Doc wasn’t used to being out played, and he got out played every time he faced the Celtics. If Larry hadn’t been tackled, then there would have been no confrontation between the 2. Larry talked shit, he never threw punches.
@antav9371
@antav9371 4 месяца назад
@@dan27052 Nope. The problem here is you making ish up. Doc didnt tackle Bird, Bird jumps towards Doc first. Slow it down, check it out, go to the eye doctor or whatever you need to do, but there was no tackling of Bird by Doc. Bird fell after he initiated the contact and while they were jockeying for position. Doc goes down court like a pro, Bird runs up to him in a rage, Doc puts his arm around Bird in a non-confrontational way, Bird throws the first punch, Doc responds like most men would when attacked. After that all bets are off. "Doc wasn’t used to being out played, and he got out played every time he faced the Celtics."-----More made up crap. I already posted the games where Julius outscored Bird in regular season games. In fact in their first 22 regular season games Doc out scored Bird 15 of those 22 times. But you can keep fantasizing if you want. Erving/Bird points: First 22 regular season matchups 37/22, 20/24, 37/23, 36/32, 36/27, 45/36, 35/24, 33/11,19/24, 24/19, 19/24, 18/24, 36/28, 20/12, 28/29, 21/12, 31/20, 28/21, 22/33, 19/13, 23/32 (Erving played 29 minutes, Bird played 44 minutes), 20/13
@dan27052
@dan27052 4 месяца назад
@@antav9371 hmm, kinda sneaky of you to only talk regular season games isn’t it? I wonder what fantasy world your living in as to not include the more important games, but then again that seems to be your style, only talk about things that suit you, and forget about everything that doesn’t? You can’t see that Bird was tackled by Doc, so you make up a scenario where he wasn’t. They played something like 68 times. This dream your living in can’t be for your reality.

It makes no sense (with what info we have) WHY Bird was so pissed off. He was torching DrJ 36-6 got ONE CALL that didn’t go how he wanted it to and ... even if the fight had never broke out Bird still walked right up to DrJ and got in his face. And this is PRESEASON so there’s ZERO implications regarding records, home court in playoffs, MVP voting... the only thing “alive” in this preseason game is.... the rivalry. Knowing how life eventually played out for both guys and both teams over the next 6-8 years it’s easy to forget that at this point in time Bird hadn’t won any of his 3 league MVPs yet, Bird had only 1 ring and DrJ and the 76ers had won it all the prior season with a historical (to this day) run through the playoffs sweeping LA in the finals. So I guess the more I stop and think about it I guess Bird having such a chip on his shoulder and being extremely competitive then I guess Birds attitude does start to make more sense. Not saying he was right by behaving that way. In fact as much of a Bird fan as I’ve been since age 10 in 1982.... Bird got what he got on this night 🤷🏼‍♂️ Boston would go on to beat LA by the end of this (‘84) season and Bird would pick up his 2nd ring. By ‘86 DrJ does retire at the end of that season and Bird picks up his 3rd ring. The 80’s Celtics VS 80’s Sixers rivalry comes to an end and Boston immediately gets into a new, equally heated rivalry with Detroit.

After watching the foul a few times, I'm guessing Bird confronted J because he thought it was a cheap shot. This is not preseason. It is an early season game both teams came in undefeated at 4-0. Bird throwing elbows the whole game instigates the fight throwing the first punch not connecting then Erving hits Bird with three right cross jabs assisted by Barkley. After the ejections Bird looked like he was going to cry from being hit. Bird is the best player in basketball at this time and decidedly so. Erving two years removed from being the best player in basketball is having one of the worst games of his career. Bird 26 and Erving pushing 35 when Boston and Philly next met that season in Philadelphia Erving dominated the game and Bird with rebounds points and blocking shots. By early mid second quarter the Sixers had blown out the Celtics. These are the two best forwards ever to play basketball up to this time. When Bird was in his late playing days Scottie Pippen regularly dominated him but before that Bird would dominate Pippen. Kevin Willis humiliated Bird where he was so bad it was hard to watch. Bird in 1984 is in the third year of a six or 7 year run playing at a level which was as great as any there has ever been in basketball and why many people think he was the best player ever. Still his teams underachieved as Bird himself laments probably because there were other great teams in the 1980's.

Oh a salty Kings fan who forgets that they got their calls in game 5 and didn’t take care of business on their home court in game 7. Yes, there were some bad, home court calls in game 6. But you can’t cite free throw disparity when they did hack a Shaq the whole quarter
@slarsp2

@@Sambone702 "Dr j got butt hurt."----Bird is the one who lost his cool. Bird got in Doc's face talking ish. Even then Doc, who was one of the classiest guys to ever play, put his arm around Birds back in a non-aggressive manner as if to say lets talk it out. Bird, having lost his cool, threw the first punch. Doc responds, can't blame him. Claiming Doc was "butt hurt" is you (and others) putting stuff in Doc's head but having no way of knowing what he was thinking, plus his actions show otherwise. Don't care about the points (plus Doc was past his prime)...great players score and get scored on. As Doc has outscored Bird at times, including 37 to 11 in a regular season game. Theres no indication Bird was going to get 70, his career high is 60.

@antav9371 after Dr. J threw him down then ran down the court. Bird doesn't do anything until Julius puts his arm around him This game shows how many points Bird could have averaged if he wanted to just be a scorer. He said he had 42 points with 9 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. He told McHale he was going to break his team scoring record and went out and got 60 on one of the greatest shooting nights of all time. He could have averaged 50 a night if he wanted to. He told Julius he needed to retire after he lit his ass up.

In a preseason game no less. Guys today dont even suit up for alot of preseason games let alone play like it's game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals. That's all you need to know about the pride and the respect guys like Bird, Erving, and Magic had for the game of basketball. What I wouldn't give to go back 40 years to see it all again.

There is a lot more going on there....than Larry walking up to Dr J. and trying to start fight. Larry got fouled 1st... the ref didn't see it his way so he was pissed off... which I get. Then Larry walked down to Dr J...and of course we all know the rest! LOL

I thought I knew this story. I did not know that this was a pre-season game or that there was only one ref! NBA games just aren't as individually significant as they were in the 80s & 90s. This is why football is my #1 watched sport now. This in-season tourney has been a great success IMO.

Dr. J saying they wanted him out as "reigning small forward of the league "? I don't think he understands the Boston Celtics, and to this day what their core was about, it wasn't none of that self aggrandizing trash that Erving is talking. Wow, what a different philosophy the whites and the bruthas have for the game .

My understanding is that Larry kept repeating the point totals he and Dr J had. Doc was having a terrible game. Bird would say like “34-4” when he hit a shot. And it was like 42-6 when they started fighting and were tossed.

Grew up in Camden, across the bridge from Philly. The Doc was like a god to us kids. I know that people think the biggest rivalry in the 80's was showtime vs Boston, but as I remember it was Boston vs Philly. Man those were great series. I of course hated the Celtics, but later in life you appreciate how lucky we were to watch these two teams and watch the Doc fly above the Spectrum. To be honest when this preseason game happened Doc was 106 years old and Larry did chase him down the court. Doc was a humble dude and the trash talk didnt bother him, Larry legend did get up on his face.
