you forgot Dennis Schroeder. Lakers offered him more money but he turned it down to play for Boston, he never got paid again after that. Same thing w/ Nerlens Noel.
Fred Van Vleet is the definition of betting on yourself. To go from an undrafted virtually unknown player to blossoming into a solid player for the Raptors.
Great video, but the Jimmy/ Tobias situation seems wrong. Y’all remember when Jimmy was saying “Tobias over me?” Sixers had a chance to keep Jimmy but didn’t
Jerami Grant has been one of my favorite role players ever since I saw him with the OKC Thunder. 💯 The 2014 draft class definitely has some solid players from the late 1st rd up to the 2nd rd. 💪
@@GarkKahn maybe because no one expects them to perform well beyond. Its really a great thing cause they can play to their fullest without getting pressured unlike players that got drafted from 1-15 or first rounders.
What is lost on the entire Brunson thing is, he did accept the initial offer of the 4yrs/55 mil, however the Mavs waited until the trade deadline to see if they could have traded him before he signed the contract. Hence after he wasn't traded then he decided he wasn't going to sign the contract. So the Mavs screwed the pooch on that 1.
Yup they were more content with Luka playing 1 on 5. Now they lost Dinwiddie (and others) who was more than capable for a rental in Kyrie that will up and leave whenever he sees fit.
The Mavs messed up that Brunson contract during the season but another thing to add here is that Leon Rose, the President of the Knicks, is also the father of Brunson's agent. Jalen's father is also an assistant coach on the team too. I think whatever the Mavs were offering, in the offseason or even while the season was still ongoing, is that he will go to New York regardless. Which, they were found guilty of tampering and were penalized by the league with the loss of a future draft pick.
What's funny is that Denver got Aaron Gordon to replace Grant and then signed him to a 4 year $88 million contact. So the dude that replaced him is still making more money than him lol
Brunson not signing with the Mavs is because they begged them to aign him for 44 million for 5 years at the start of the season but never got the response they wanted, after Brunson showed up in the playoffs they offered him the same deal which is insulting, also wheres Jalen Brown?
Pretty sure it was the Mavs who didn’t want to offer Brunson a deal before the season and Brunson would have signed. But once they didn’t he balled out, then they upped the deal and then he chose NY
This is the main reason why Brunson signed with New York because theres so much misinformation about the move when he could've resigned with the mavs but the Mavs didn't have the offer on the table for Brunson
This was a great video featuring some awesome examples of betting on yourself, Andy. That being said, the Jalen Brunson saga is more a case of revenge and family connections, then betting on yourself. Brunson was perfectly willing to sign for that 4-year, $55.5 million extension. He would not have rejected that deal if the Dallas Mavericks had simply offered it to him as soon as he was eligible for it. The problem, like you alluded to, is that the Mavericks did NOT offer it to Brunson until after the trade deadline. By waiting until then, Dallas lost all of their leverage and ENABLED Jalen to bet on himself. The Mavs clearly failed to foresee that the New York Knicks would clear out a sh!tload of cap space and hire Brunson's father, Rick, to be an assistant coach prior to free agency. Rick hadn't coached pro ball for YEARS, but coincidentally (😉😉😉), the last time he did, it was for Tom Thibodeau on the Minnesota Timberwolves. Likewise, if they had traced the roots of Jalen's agent, Sam Rose of CAA, they would have learned he was the son of Leon Rose, President of the Knicks, and the FOUNDER of CAA. Did I mention that Leon was ALSO Papa Rick Brunson's agent when HE was an NBA player? 😉🏀💰
Thanks for the info. Mavs really fumbled with Brunson by refusing to sign him early on. Mark Cuban has screwed up a number of times. Cuban refused to match the offer that the Suns gave Steve Nash -- one of the dumber mistakes in NBA history as Nash went on to win two MVPs. No doubt Mavs could have won another title or two during the Nowitski era simply by keeping Nash. Then Cuban duplicates the exact same feat with Brunson -- losing him for nothing -- and the Mavs are much worse without him. Cuban also infamously refused to draft Giannis -- even with his GM, Nelson Jr., begging him to take the 'Greek Freak'. Bucks took Giannis with the next pick after the Mavs and the rest is history. Nelson Jr. got them to draft Luka but he was fired last year so I expect Mavs problems to get worse. After firing Nelson Jr., Cuban traded away Porzingas but got very little for him. And didn't even get salary cap relief from the trade as Bertans has one of the worst contracts in the league. As to the Kyrie trade..... entertaining but don't see it turning them into a serious contender for a title.
@@randygram9310 Jason Kidd is going to have his hands full getting Luka Dončić to buy in to a two-guard lineup with Kyrie Irving. Uncle Drew has played off ball for many years doing it in Cleveland, Boston and Brooklyn. Dončić, on the other hand, was at his best when Jalen Brunson tailored his game to complement Luka. This will be a first and a major adjustment for Dončić, so if he wants Kyrie, who has proven he can carry the Mavs all by himself, to stick around, he'll have to embrace that change. Otherwise, I'm hearing potential Dallas backup plans to sign-and-trade Irving to the L.A. Lakers for D'Angelo Russell in a double sign-and-trade. 🏀
2 seasons ago Tobias Harris actually looked like he was worth that huge contract but now yea lets not talk about that...He's pretty good but way overpayed for his current production on the court for the 76ers
No, they didn’t offer that 4yr 55mil to Brunson. He said he would’ve taken it, if they offered it, but the Mavs fucked up, and now he’s on one of the best contracts in the Nba
As a Mavs fan, I was totally pissed on that Brunson saga, We did extend players who are Taiwan League players at best to ludicrous deals(Powell and THJ) and got stupid fat contracts like Bertans, yet we could've secured Brunson with that 55M deal but it was too late when the deadline passed. It was a huge mistake by the front office 😑
Jimmy was originally about to get traded with Doug McDermott for Kevin Love in the 2014 off season. The crazy thing is actually that the Bulls DIDN’T do it. That trade would’ve taken Love off the Cavs radar and gotten the Bulls the Best Power Forward in the league, who was putting up 26, 13, & 5 a night. This was on top of Carmelo Anthony ready to join the Bulls. This would’ve nearly guaranteed the Championship or at least a Finals run. Carmelo got the offer from NYK and decided money is more important than winning. The Bulls wouldn’t up their contract offer because they wouldn’t be able to keep Taj Gibson. Carmelo re-signed with NYK. The Bulls wouldn’t trade for Kevin Love not because of Jimmy, but because of Doug McDermott. (who Thibs never let off the bench anyway)
@@milobuur9913 😂 yea dude tripping. That's not even counting th players that's listed at other positions but play the point majority of the game like Kyrie and Bron
I still don't know why people thought tobias harris did so good on the clippers dude was decent people acting like he a superstar that's why he doing shit on the sixers.
Idk , I don't come from that kinda money ....So maybe my answer sounds simplistic or naive. But if im getting offered 40-50 mill and it seems to be in-line with market value ....I'm snatching that money before they realize nobody is really worth that much money 🤣 Mostly all of these players are replaceable , it just depends on timing , leverage , and whether that team realizes there's other options to pivot to. Plus , how many millions of dollars can 1 individual hope to spend in their lifetime?! There's a saying ....." A bird in the hand , is better than 2 in the bush "
What about my man Kyle Lowry? He bet on himself three times and won each time. First, it was when he was with the Rockets. The Rockets didn't extend him and let him shop via restricted free agency. His agent was able to get an offer sheet from Cleveland and the Rockets matched the offer sheet of 4 yrs, 24mil. Which was a mistake because they offered him a low two year extension with two club option years. When he got traded to Toronto, his played out before cashing in the unrestricted free agency at summer of 2017 and got a 4 yr 130 mil after he turned down a smaller 4 year offer from Rapts. Now got another 3 year deal from Miami that will paid him $85 until end of 2024 season at age 37 after Toronto balked at paying him that much and did a sign and trade for him. This is the ultimate betting on himself on every chance possible and win at every turn. He might not get the most money, but he definitely came out much richer than the original offers each time.
Well regarding Jerami Grant it is a bit different then what you said here. He didn't want to be under white coach and white gm, that is the core reason he chose Pistons. He wanted to be in black community and to give them back for the support. So he didn't bet on himself or anything, he just wanted to be in black community with black coach and gm.
@@christianjones1834 On 1st interview when he said that, I think majority of people where shock because he only said he wants to be under black coach and gm and not white coach and gm. After that initial interview he gave a bit better explanation and add that he wants to give back to black community. So yeah, it is low key racism I do agree but 2nd part was a nice gesture. So not sure if 2nd part was genuine or someone point him what he said and gave him a bit of different direction or the guy is not that good with words.
I like your channel but you’re wrong about Butler. He wanted to stay in Philly. The 76ers offered Harris the 5 year deal and Butler only a 4 year deal because of his injury history. This is a fact. Butler has always been the guy who’s prioritized winning and doesn’t care if he’s the 1st or 5th option. But Philly tried to lowball him because of his injury history and his mercurial personality towards teammates and organizations up to that point. The Heat stepped in and offered that 5th year. Butler rewarded them with a finals appearance. Had the Sixers been smart then it’s likely Simmons never has his meltdown and they’re the ones making finals appearances and maybe raising a banner.
Fred & Jimmy my two favorite stories!!…. Fred from ULTIMATE UNDERDOG…. TO NBA CHAMPION!!!!!! & HE IS SMALL PLUS NOT TYPICAL NBA BODY ARCHETYPE!!! HE WILL FOREVER BE KNOWN AS A NBA CHAMPION!! CRAZY!!!!….. &…. “ERRYBODY GOT PAID”😭😭 IF U KNOW…. THAN U KNOW!! 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I think its risky as hell to bet on yourself if you get an offer in ten million range. With that kind of monet you can easily live the rest of your life very comfortably. You can never know when your career can end in a bad injury or if you can really get better and get a more lucrative deal.
I think Brunson wasn't the dude next to Luka to get a chip. They got him paid and let him go back home. Nobody has hard feelings about it but fans and media. Everyone else is fine.
