After yesterday's soaking over the Bealach na Ba, we were overjoyed to wake to the absence of the pitter-patter of rain on the campervan roof. The only question was, will it last!?
Let's find out, as the journey along the, loosely followed, North Coast 500 continues! Today we take in the north west of the Scotland as we flirt playfully with the rough and ragged coastline of these Scottish highlands.

As a Canadian I finished my one trip around the NC500 gobsmacked and determined. Gobsmacked because of the indescribable beauty; determined to return with the proper mentality. The proper mentality, my opinion, is distilled down to a few points: 1) Properly forget the weather, remember the proper gear. 2) The NC part is vastly more important then the 500 part; savor the journey like a fine single malt: look, sniff, taste. 3) Ride the NC 500 when the tourists aren’t as thick as midges . . . which brings us back to #1. Lord, please give me a second chance!

I totally agree on all points! You’re always going to get wet in scotland! We probably ended up doing more that wasn’t on the 500 than that was! Lots of segues, backtracks and loops inland. We got to see so much more of the incredible place. Good luck with that second chance!!

I have toured the highlands of Scotland more times than I can remember, in every season. If you are new to touring it's a great 'starter for ten'. Pack for every type of weather and the scenery will not let you down....

You can't say that the road painters don't make the most of their jobs!! We did actually see a fair few snow poles at the side of some of the roads. Just managed to cut them all out apparently!

Having had severral sets of Rukka clobber I can say it os good but still lets in the water eventually. A couple of tricks I learned on the circuit in London was make an apron out of the courier bag to avoid water pooling in the nads basket, maybe a mod to be made to a tank bag? Also wear a light breathable waterproof jacket underneath the main jacket, It can stop the little bit that leaks in and keep you comfortable.

Enjoy watching your videos and your acrobatics while riding keeps you warm and good exercise, love Scotland and looking forward to or trips later this year, we shall be on the new GS R1250, first few days and feels good, getting to grips with the Anakee Adventure tyres, get them worn out and back to the 05s, they were superb on the 1200. Ride safe everyone.

Great vid. I rode sports bikes 15 years ago - the thought of chatting while sauntering down these roads seems foreign to me. Got an X Diavel S due very soon and NC500 plans for this year - comms, relaxed riding and actually seeing the scenery is appealing now! Can’t wait.

Thanks very much Peter. It’s been thoroughly enjoyable to relive this one through the editing too. Adds to the finished product i think. I could happily make every one an hour long. Maybe even 2!! But it seems that 25 minutes is the Magic compromise for those who don’t have the attention span for epic length episodes!!

Gotta agree, on tour, you need all weather kit. I got some Rukka up at the NEX bike show last year... is awesome, warm when its cold out, dry when it is wet out and also light and not uncomfortable should it get warm! :-)

Was in Scotland during that 2018 heatwave, so weird walking around in short sleeves and shorts. I think that year was the only year they managed to get a satellite picture of the highlands without clouds. Great vid as always though

Nice work, as usual, Andy. Have you given up on using your Garmin 360 camera for capturing on-bike footage? Any particular reason for that beyond the additional faff of reframing a load of footage to incorporate it into your videos? Keep up the good work.

The faff was immense with that camera, but the real reason is that the camera was only loaned to me from Garmin. I wasn’t impressed enough with it to shell out the 600€ it would have cost. So back to 170 degrees for the time being!

@@AndyManCam The state of the art has moved on significantly since that Garmin Camera. See if you can get Insta360 to loan/donate a One X or One R camera to try. Workflow is much simpler now and the tools to support the reframing are great these days. With your subscriber base, they would probably give you a camera, gratis. @@AndyManCam Just got the Avant after the F5mc died ,,great set but the buttons are a slight soft so if you have thick gloves on its a bit of a faff but apart ffom that i would recomend the Interphone kit.👍🏍

I find the Tour really easy to use with gloves on. They’ve done a good job with the layout. Not so keen on how the working works though. If you take the intercom off, you have a cable flapping in the wind!

Haha! As Gintry says, that's the charm! Sadly you have to assume that it WILL be cold and wet, and then if it's not, you're getting more than you bargained for! Also, being in that mindset helps you to not be so disappointed when the sun doesn't come out.

Yeah that set looks proper tasty. Might have to stick with what I’ve got for now, otherwise I’ll not be able to afford a trip to use them on!!

I realized it as soon as I started editing! Weird how you can be so sure and so wrong at the same time!! The break in the weather was very welcome! The Michelins are good in the wet, but everything is even better in the dry!!
