Thanks for the video (I'm catching up), a very handy refresher on NDB tracking for a long-lapsed IMC holder & timely reminder of the 1 in 60 principle.
Great vid. I was taught to sync the rotating card on the ADF with your DI heading it is a lot less confusing and there's less mental gymnastics involved.
Reference the max drift question, the rule of thumb I use is: "At 90KTS, max drift is 2/3 of the wind speed". I used the method to answer the question and approximated it to be about 12.5 degrees which is close enough.
Thank you for the video it was very informative. I only wish I watched this before my RNAV exam it was great to see the hold’s carried out and thank you for the rule of thumb for x-winds
Well done Jon, another great video and I would say your objective of NDB illustration was well met with clear descriptions and illustrations. Your SkyDemon trace showed accurate and consistent flying. Was it me or does the voice on the Pilot aware sound like a young boy? Thought you might have given Bertie a new job! :)
I so want to post my own videos but with the production quality of yours Jon I'd look like a total rookie. About to start hinting cameras down, going to record my flights and see how it goes. Keep up the excellent work!
Another quality video, Jon. Thanks for posting. Always enjoyed your stuff since I discovered your channel, but the recent videos in particular have been of a very high production quality. Great work :)
Great video as always, your my favourite subscription on RU-vid at the moment as I'm getting back into single pilot IFR flying. Quick question, do you call Southend and Lydd before getting in the air to ask for the approaches or do you just rock up and request them then? Secondly, do you need to pay for these practice instrument approaches since you're not actually landing? Cheers, Toby
Currently saving my money for the PPL your videos really keep me going and focused on it, can’t wait until I finally begin flying may even do my introductory flight soon at Biggin Hill :)
Nice work, love the inclusion of skydemon tracks and the southend approach chart. really helps to picture what's going on. You make the ndb tracking, hold and approach look easy - I bet it's not ! :)
Started my IRR lessons recently. Watched this again as hopefully heading to Southend in a couple of lesson to do the NDB hold and ILS approach, good to hear the R/T too. Nicely flown!
Please can you explain how you have connected in the audio from PilotAware? And what will happen when PilotAware is giving an audio report at the same time as for example ATC are communicating with you - will they step on each other? I note you had to switch it off - have you set up the configuration of PAW with your aircraft ICAO Hex-ID so that PAW ignores 1090mhz transmissions from your own transponder? This MAY be your problem? Thanks for the video.
+Roger Luff hi. It's an audio cable out of PAW into the aircrafts intercom system. It mutes when intercom is active or there's an ATC call. I haven't set it up, so don't know about the config. Jon
