Hi, I’m Meg from the NDIS. We’re here in Albury-Wodonga for the Australian Deaf Games. We’ve come here to find out why the games are so important to the Australian Deaf community.
The Australian Deaf Games provides an opportunity for Deaf and hard of hearing athletes to have full access and inclusion in sport through Auslan.
At the Australian Deaf Games we’re really supportive and understanding of each other’s needs, and it is a lot more challenging in the mainstream arena, even though we all do try our best. It really does come back to that sense of belonging that we have here, I think.
It’s a great networking opportunity and it’s great to meet new people and I really enjoy catching up with people I haven’t seen for such a long time.
I love the Australian Deaf Games because it’s such a great opportunity to come and play sport and bring my family and they can see that being deaf is just a normal part of life.
There’s a real sense of culture and family here, which is just lovely. And I love every part of the Deaf Games.
So now you know why everyone loves the Australian Deaf Games. If you’d like any more information, or you’d like to get involved, have a look at these websites.
