Because the best way the NDP party can influence changes is by providing their support to the minority party in power but under conditions of their choosing. "Pulling his support" for Trudeau won't do any good. Since the NDP has near zero chance of winning an election in its current state, the best outcome is a liberal minority where the NPD has enough seats to make it a pseudo majority. Criticizing the liberal party for not doing enough while also voting with the liberal party is not hypocritical. The alternative is stagnation.

Think about that for a second. The NDP isn't going to magically do away with our terrible electoral system. People who would otherwise vote that way are still gonna vote Liberal just to keep the Tories out of office. So, as a third party, you have two choices, A) Reject both parties on the grounds of ideological purism B) Hold a gun to the head of the lesser evil and force them to pass legislation you want in exchange for not pulling the trigger I know which option I'd choose. That's how we got our healthcare system after all. Nothing exceptional ever happened in this country under a majority government.

The carbon tax hasn't increased prices. You can just look at the Consumer Price Index over the years to find out for yourself. Conservatives just attack the Carbon Tax because their donors are rich fossil fuel companies.

The alternative is a hung parliament or a Tory government, neither of which are desirable to anyone moderately left leaning. The least worst option is to hold the Liberal government at gunpoint in an attempt to get at least some decent legislation pushed through. Wouldn't be an issue if our electoral system wasn't so skewed and parties could work together to present a common agenda instead of competing for an overly inflated majority.

@@Adee_j___ What Singh is talking about here is using the Fed as a weapon against workers by raising interest rates. The NDP has no control of that even though they made an arrangement. The liberals had a majority government in 2015. They did nothing on housing or dental. When they lost the majority the NDP forced them to concede on housing and dental so we got some moves in that direction. That's why the NDP made the deal. The liberals are holding the NDP back. Look at the NDP's platform. They are a workers party. None of the other parties have the support of the unions.

If you're interested in finding out more about the NDP look at what they're doing in BC and Alberta. They control the government there. But be cautious about Alberta as from my understanding the population is a little more conservative there so they might not be as bold.

The Liberals and NDP have never been ideologically chummy. And there sadly hasn't been a coalition in this country in decades thanks to our apparent national belief that compromise is a dirty word. The current arrangement is pretty undesirable for both sides. The NDP nominally offers voting support in parliament and the Liberals nominally agree to reward that by passing legislation the NDP wants... eventually... maybe.

Remember when Minority governments were great for Canadian the LESTER B PEARSON LEGACY Tommy Douglas held the door open for this fantastic legacy and Jagmeet Singh will try to do the same!

Well said. As someone loyal to NDP since Jack Layton and one who publicly opposed Harper, I cannot believe that I will be giving my vote to the conservatives. As it has always been, voting for the least worst option. Sure maybe some of the smaller parties might be less corrupt but that would just split the vote like the last election. So I won't make same mistake and will be voting conservative even though I am not happy about it!

@@naythanstonge9411 Personally my goal this time around is to vote NDP knowing that they’re the party which in theory aligns most closet to my values, and hoping that over time we can pressure them to move in the direction that might actually help Canadians. I think a big part of why we see such spineless representation in the NDP is sort of a confidence issue. The party is relegated to living in third place on the national stage, and I think they’ve adopted this method of piggybacking off the liberals to exercise some form of power… but maybe hopefully if we could open up public opinion to truly democratic, pro worker, pro consumer options (like social housing, re-nationalizing key Canadian industries etc) we can reform the NDP into a party worth supporting Also don’t vote Pierre that’s a huge overcorrection

@@naythanstonge9411 Splitting the vote isn't a bad thing. The fact that you're thinking that way is a symptom of how broken our electoral system is. Most healthy democracies don't produce majorities. Look at any of the top democracies in the world and you'll find they consist of systems where parties must negotiate to form broad coalitions representing a majority of the population. It shouldn't matter if you only get 20% of the seats. That should be enough to influence legislation. Instead we're stuck with the undemocratic inefficiency of First Past The Post.

There’s two incredibly effective ways to handle that. First would be nationalizing Loblaw to force ethical competition, and if that’s too socialist for you then the second would be to break the company into smaller pieces who would be forced to lower prices (again in the name of competition). We’ve done both of these things throughout our history to dig ourselves out of economic holes and it always works for the better, here and in the states

@@donman9154 Not everyone has Blue Cross (or equivalent) coverage for dental and orthodontics are not covered by many programs. My parents had to pay out of pocket for my braces. Cleanings and other services usually are only covered 80% anyways so a few visits to the dentist a year with multiple kids can add up!
