NDTV Gets Rare Access To India's Unique Breeder Nuclear Reactors

To achieve the target of net-zero emissions, atomic energy will play a big part in India's energy transition strategy. In a rare access, NDTV visited the one-of-a-kind and highly guarded experimental nuclear reactor that breeds more fuel than it consumes to generate energy. Called the Fast Breeder Test Reactor, it has been the test bed for India's ambitious 500 MW Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor. Fast Breeder Reactors are one of a kind atomic reactors. Only Russia and India have operating fast-breeder reactors. Nuclear energy does not emit carbon.

Of course they are competent in their work but that is not what is at test here. Here we need some one who can explain a complex science in a simple understandable form and deliver it in a language that he masters. Mr. Shanmugham is surely a very competent engineer but he is neither proficient in the English language nor is he able to break down his knowledge in to simple building blocks for people to understand. They should have prepared him better and asked him to deliver it in Tamil with a translator or better still got another person to do the job. Why must a station in charge have to come forward to explain this. This is the problem with hierarchy in Indian departments. It has to be the boss! Why is that. Are there no eloquent and knowledgeable people in the lower ranks?

NDTV you should have gotten someone better for the interview. Having a nuclear industry is one of the biggest achievements of India since independence. It should receive much more respect and media attention.

India does have domestic supplies of uranium - but every time we try to mine it, some protest groups mysteriously show up to oppose such mining. It's very strange that we've not learned how to handle such problems.

Apporv Sorry, in fact it's very hard to destroy nature. look at past examples of abandoned open cast coal mines , or Chernobyl nuclear disaster area. They're thriving natural experiments in restoration. Sure, it does take time, but nature ultimately wins in all it's complicated beauty

Excellent update on the Fast Breeder Reactor. Salute to scientist like Shanmugam Sir. He mentioned that the prototype Fast Breeder Reactor will become critical this year. Wish more funds were allocated to this program to expedite the process.

As Sir Said, FAST here is not about time taken to develop it, rather it is about the FAST moving neutrons that are not slowed down by any moderator in 2nd stage FBRs As u said , UPSC would sure gring the interview candidates 😂😂

Every region is safe, only regions within the reactor, which is unsafe is the core structure, and this area is covered with only one entry-exit point. and that point 3 layer of stell door are install.

Commendable work done. India has foresight and direct about nuclear. However I think this will not add to much our energy basket. Progess is too slow. It took 38 year. I am guessing by the time there is commercial reactor ready it will be 2050. Solar power is already cheaper add to the storage cost still be cheaper. I think it's cool but we not useful.

No - These are not from Russia. Reactor is similar to Rapsodie of France which is no longer operational. The Control room Electronics is completely built by India - ECIL & BARC & IGCAR were involved.

We, 19-20 then, toured the kalpakkam FBTR from Loyola College in 1982-83, as students of Dr. Yedanapalli, Industrial Chemistry, an elective course - just before it was to go 'alive'. I wish I had seen someone with expertise giving the interview. I am not critiquing their accent or command of English.

Check our Russian civil nuclear tech export numbers.....it's one of the leading player. The accident happened even in Japan and US (not of that scale but still...). RBMK reactor accident was due to humane error (and perhaps overconfidence of designers upto certain extent) but that doesn't make russian nuclear program inferior

Dumbo this is Indian technology. Even china lacks commercially available fast breeder reactors. Indian reactor has capacity of 500mw and 600mw. Whereas russian reactor have 800Mw reactor. Only 2 countries in the world have commercially operated fast breeder reactors.

No wonder the breeder reactor program is delayed by 38 years, with such jokers heading the program. China already has an operational Fast Breeder Reactor. The reactor has a thermal capacity of 65 MW and can produce 20 MW in electrical power. The CEFR was built by Russia's OKBM Afrikantov in collaboration with OKB Gidropress, NIKIET and the Kurchatov Institute. First concrete for the Chinese Fast Breeder Rector was poured in May 2000. The reactor achieved first criticality in July 2010 and was connected to the grid at 40% capacity a year later.

CEFR is experimental reactor. What India is aiming towards PFBR, proto-type fast reactor, 1200 MWth. Obviously, scaleup will have its own issues.

i was expecting this comment. anything which is new and "first in the world" takes time . there were a lot of technical issues which we had to solve ourself as we are the first making this reactor . that chinese reactor uses other technology and comparing that to pfbr shows you know little to none in this field . all you want to do is comment some bs , blame government ,scientist and demoralize our youth

@@odomangulati7079 first of all it only took 20 yrs though it is still a lot and second , science takes time . specially something as complex as nuclear engineering. the reason we were so much advancing in science during cold war was because USSR,USA were investing like crazy on science projects but once the cold war ended we are back to slow pace . this is the reason why only some countries have fast breeders reactors despite their invention in 1960s . the delay is not because of govt. or something . neither our nuclear scientist are not talented enough. its becaue the complexity involve in the project . and tbh i have seen no sensible person to complain and get demotivated because this project took 20 yrs . everybody understands that science takes time and it isnt that easy .especially when we are the one doing it for first time

@@odomangulati7079 i would not say those are "technical issues" . technical issues are usually just some minor issues in final product . while those issues challenge our understanding of physics and engineering .technical issues are an understatement . those issues are complexities for which we need to alter our understanding of physics and engineering to finally succeed (which we did).

This is what happens when you do not prepare the scientist or the engineer for the interview! Their vast knowledge is plagued by unplanned, unstructured, un simplified, unreachable (to the public) delivery of knowledge. Totally useless for the public. Sometimes you chose a wrong person to interview as well since not all can explain complex knowledge in simple language. The reporter is actually leading the engineer here so whose interview is this? 😂😂
