For more than 30 years, Grammy Award-winning saxophonist, arranger, composer, and bandleader Kenny Garrett has garnered critical recognition for his versatility in jazz, blues, and R&B contexts. He began his career performing with the Duke Ellington Orchestra and Mel Lewis Orchestra. In 1987, Garrett began working with Miles Davis, becoming a member of Davis’ working group-a collaboration that lasted for five years.

When I first saw Kenny playing with Miles Davis I just got a feeling that they have played together for many many years. He's an excellent alto saxophone player with Soul and Spirit in his playing. He doesn't just demonstrate speed and altissimo virtuosity like many other sax players I have listened to. He fully deserves this NEA Jazz Masters nation endowment. Thanks.

Kenny, thank you for reminding me of that special smell that woodwind cases give off (probably a mix of key oil, leather pads, and brass or wood (clarinet). My dear friend, Kenny Kirkland, first told me about your playing. I always enjoyed your call and response with Miles. Keep up the great work! I’ll be listening because your playing inspires me.

I was lucky enough to get to meet him a few years back. He was as nice and as genuine as he comes across in this video.

I've become a big fan of Kenny and his music, and I knew when I saw Miles hipping with him on that european gig (while the twin bass players hipped each other) that that was a BIG moment for him ... Ellington, RnB, Coltrane, and Miles... that's why i love KG....

Imho you are the successor to Coltrane. I love the spirituality in your music. It is uniquely African American. Congratulations, maestro!

I'm so very, very, curious as to why, when Mr. Garrett speaks of his association with the Ellington organisation, that the photo of that the NEA chose to broadcast is a portrait where The Duke is with Fr. Gerald Pocock of Montreal? Thank you in advance for any helpful answers to my question! (And thanks to Mr. Fernando Ortiz de Urbina, of London England, for definitively identifying Fr. Pocock for me!).

i think it was a 1958 johnny griffin date called a blowin’ session with johnny griffin, hank mobley and john coltrane on tenor, lee morgan on trumpet, art blakey in drums, wynton kelly on piano, paul chambers on bass. i would be curious to know exactly which track he is referencing … lots of greqt playing on that album.

Funny that they put the trombone player Jimmy Cleveland to illustrate the great gospel singer and pianist James Cleveland when Kenny Garrett mention music in his house as a kid...that's not very accurate 😂
