I'm hyper aware of blind spots like that after realizing a long time ago that in modern cars, the sloping A-pillar blocks a much wider swath than was the case on the really old cars I've mostly driven. If your car is moving slightly, such as not quite coming to a stop at a stop sign, that A-pillar can "pan across" your view and continue to keep an oncoming car out of sight. It's not that I ever had a close call because of this, but I have had a learning experience. It's much the same in a motor boat, where it's really easy to lose track of the fact that unless you move your head around to see the places that have been blocked from your view for any length of time, something could be there in that blind spot. I operate a small tiller-controlled motor boat like the one that zoomed by you, but I also spend a lot if time in tiny rowboats and canoes. I like your air-horn idea and I wonder why I never thought of that myself. I'm gonna start taking one with me when I'm in a tiny boat on big water, or even for when I'm fishing while anchored in the little motor boat, because I've had bozos in big power boats fail to see me in that situation too.

We have that problem down here with bass boats...the credit card captians have no clue what they are doing...also they use their electronics to run wide open in the fog. They think that is safe to do...they never think about others on the water.

That's a close shave. Poor awareness from that boat.

It's guys like that which will kill a kayaker. Bad day or blind spot, it won't matter. I been almost hit a bunch. Every time was someone not paying attention. If they killed you they'll just say it was an accident and go about their happy life like nothing happened

Boating is done without education. It is done without consideration of others. What should be done? That is obvious. Law enforcement. But then we are faced with the corruption of local departments and individuals in those departments and as is already done on our streets and highways. Injustice and violations by those who are sworn to uphold the law. Catch 22.

I stopped getting into boats years ago because of idiots and drunks out there having a good time and not giving a damn about anyone else. Myself and others nearly drowned because of a drunken moron who was too busy having a good time and nearly tipped the boat
