Hi David. Thank you for the update. I knew when we spoke with her and the owners of Uptown Ford Lincoln on Hwy 100 the day of our interview, they were courting her in hope that someday they would be able to include it in their personal car collection. We heard rumors over the years but nothing we could confirm till last month via a newspaper article. Thank you again for taking the time to share and for watching. When my wife and I got married in 63, there was a gas war going on and I saw gas at 19 cents a gallon. I heard some say they saw it lower then that, but I can't remember any lower then 19 cents. Remarkable lady. I drove cars not till they quit, but the bodies rusted off from salt. Two Dodge Darts with slant six engines. You couldn't kill them engines.
@WisconsinGarden

We were honored to interview Rachel when she came to Wisconsin - RIP. We too remember 19 cents a gallon around 1967-68-ish in the Milwaukee area. Richard had a 57' Chevy and brought it back from Texas in 1966. I loved the full front seat, large steering wheel, little side windows, not sure if it had seat belts.. He even had a knob attached to the steering wheel for turning. Ahh, the days of more innocence times when objects seemed to built to last longer. We continue to wish your family, friends and neighbors to stay healthy. Lynn & Richard www.WisconsinGarden.com

Absolutely facinating to watch, saddened to read that she passed away a few years ago RIP I hope her chariot is indeed in a museum as she wished as testamony to a fine one careful lady owner and her low milage 'chariot' as america used to make cars the envy of the world that run forever and back, so future generations can marvel at american engineering and manufacturing. One more thing I'd like to ask this one off thumb down moron, what was it that he didn't like? The fine old lady interviewee with impeccable record keeping for posterity 12 gals for $1 or the very mannered and considerate interviewer! Thanks for sharing this gem with us regards from the UK

It was our pleasure in interviewing her and her amazing legacy with her Chariot. As for those who leave a "Thumbs Down" I guess it's their loss in not being to appreciate what others are willing to share. Considering all of our posted video blogs on our website www.WisconsinGarden.com less than 1/100th of 1% leave a thumbs down. Guess Will Rodgers knew what he was saying when he said "You can please some of the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time." Enough said. Thank you for your supportive comments, for watch, caring and sharing. Lynn & Richard

I had a rust free '62 Comet when I was stationed at 29 Palms, CA. I bought it from another Marine and his wife. They bought it from the original owner, a little old lady they met at church in pristine condition. A week or so after they bought it, someone lost control on a curve in Joshua Tree National Park and wiped out the drivers door. It was white with a light blue interior and 3 speed on the column. I drove that car on many trips to AZ and airport runs transporting departing Marines. I remember sleeping in the back. On a return trip from Palm Springs, the passenger side front wheel bearing began to smoke. The car was towed (without my consent) and the estimate for the tow and repairs were more than I could afford. It served the country honorably.

If you keep up on the regular maintenance, fix anything that is wrong with the vehicle this is the result. A car that is still like new. Most people these days don't have the patience to keep a car running this long, car enthusiasts will generally have cars that last longer and if you keep putting money into keeping it running good it'll probably outlast a human.

+Whispered X - We remember a time when you could instantly recognize the make and model of a car before most became aerodynamic boxes crammed with electronics. WisconsinGarden ugh the new ones are all computerized to the point it monitors how much windshield fluid you use. My car has a light that tells me i got a code and so far it's been coming on for the past year with something wrong with the emissions, wasn't expensive but it's annoying that something else is wrong with the emissions every 3 months. Older cars don't have this issue thankfully.

I'm amazed on how much she actually knew about her Comet! I have one too, and although I'm very flattered when people approach me to talk about it, I'm surprised that so many people today know so little about cars in general. I suppose it's because today's cars - which most people drive - are so incredibly complicated, they give up before they even consider learning about it.
@WisconsinGarden
@WisconsinGarden 8 лет назад
+ohhhwolfy - Yes, Richard and I lived in a time when you could instantly recognize the make and even model of a automobile. That's why we grabbed the opportunity to interview Rachel and her Chariot when she came to town. Unfortunately, RU-vid only allowed us to post 10 minute videos which is why it's in 2 parts. Often thought of going back and re-editing it into one video. Cars back then were so much more than just aerodynamic boxes. I guess the PT Cruiser was a giant leap back into the mindset of today's designers longing again for a style with instant recognition. Of course there's Corvette, Thunderbird, Caddies, Buicks and Lincolns and all the muscle cars and dragsters. Just image if Detroit made a half-hearted effort to bring back the 57' Chevy. I can only imagine the line waiting to place their order. Imagine if it had a truly standard frame you could pop on a different body styles every year just by buying a DYI kit. Guess regulations, conformity, and planned obsolescence and lack of longevity set's Detroit's agenda. Don't get me wrong, there are some great features and interiors in some of today's cars and trucks. At least we still have great memories or a simpler time when cars had style and could be worked on without computerization. P.S. Recently grabbed the wrong emission paperwork for a different car VIN. It passed. Hmmmm! Thanks for watching and sharing your comment. Lynn & Richard

As mentioned to many other viewers, it was an honor to interview her and hear her story when a local dealership invited her to showcase her Mercury Chariot. Unfortunately we have yet to hear what her children or other family members decided to do with her beloved Chariot. Hopefully a local news network will consider doing a follow-up report as we've received so many inquiries. Seeing that she passed away only a couple of months ago, perhaps her estate is in probate which could take 18 month or more to lawfully dissolve. Stay tuned. Thanks for watching, caring and sharing. In spite of the '66 Comet not being kept for very long, my parents did keep and drive some other cars far longer, including a 1954 Chevrolet station wagon for 50+ years, and a '65 Falcon and a '67 Mercedes for about 40 years. Admittedly, these mostly sat around after 15 or 20 years, and they got nowhere NEAR 600,000 miles! In fact the Chevy only ended up with something like 86,000 miles, as I remember.

Sounds like your grandmother Mary also was a spirited and spunky woman like Rachel and her beloved "Chariot." Not sure if you’ve read the update posted to other viewers but Rachel Veitch passed away on May 11, 2017 at the age of 98 in Orlando, Florida. She was born in Erie PA on August 8, 1918 and as a unique woman who took great pride and cared of her beloved 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente she called her ‘Chariot.’ All major parts have been constantly verified and documented as original (engine, transmission, frame, body etc.) in addition to all the oil changes, batteries and other minor maintenance she so patiently attended. She documented the life and service of her Mercury over the years. When you consider the average ownership of a car, her story is very unique and deserved to be told. We were grateful she allowed us to do this 2-part interview. At the time, RU-vid only allowed us 15-minute max so we had little choice but to make it in 2 parts. From what she had documented in her book files and also told us at the time of this interview (6 years ago) only regular maintenance (oil changes, shocks, battery, etc.) issues where upgraded. All major parts were original, (engine, transmission, frame, body etc.) which was also verified when we talked with the dealership owner who sponsored her visit and with whom she stayed with during her visit. We got the impression that the dealership was going all out, during the day and evening, wining and dining her during her week-long stay. They were hoping she would eventually leave the car with them in the future. I doubt if that ever happened or we would have heard about it at the dealership we regularly pass on Hwy 100 in Wauwatosa. If you ever come across information to the contrary, we'd love to hear about it so we can pass on verified source information. After all, we don't want to be accused of passing on "Fake News" right, Ha-Ha? Have a great weekend. Thanks again for watching, caring and sharing. Lynn & Richard

It's unfortunate that I have no info about Rachel and the "chariot". other than what you have shared. WisconsinGarden. Indeed this story is very important. Rachel's passion should be passed down and remembered to all the people that wish to have true pride and understanding of the cars that helped our nation grow. As of 2-2-18 Mary is still tap dancing and tinkering. We called it the betty Bomber because my aunt Betty and my grandma were rosie the riveters in ww2. working at the boeing plant in Seattle Wa. Nose cone workers on the B-17 Bombers. The car got it's name because My aunt Betty didn't like to be on the inside of the plane. I guess she was claustrophobic. Grandma didn't mind... so in she went. she said I feel closer to my boys in here. Needless to say her and my aunt Betty would drive home together. And my gram would give her a hell of a ride. So in like 63-64 my grandma Said "If you boys can build a car with the same passion it will be a great car" So we built the car for them. Pride, passion and beauty. Thank you Lynn and Richard. No really. Thank You.

We love the follow up story. Truly Mary is also a very amazing woman with a great philosophy for life. It was wonderful for her to share so freely. She sounds like a very spirited woman. WWII is the only time in history Richard feels a strong connection. Perhaps he absorbed the sentiments of that age along with his patriot call to serve in the USAF just at the time when we became so-called Advisors in Vietnam. He was stationed in Okinawa during the Gulf of Tonkin incident in 1964. Thank you again for caring and sharing as well. Deeply appreciated. Lynn & Richard

She seemed a lot like my great grandmother Lola Woodard. She bought her car new - a 1956 Buick in robin’s egg blue - in ‘56, when my grandmother Linda was eight years old. That car stuck around to see two children grow up, then six grandchildren, and ten great grandkids. When Lola died in 2016, that car had damn near a million miles on it. My uncle owns it now and still drives it from time to time.

Hello Jack. Your great grandmother Lola left a great story someone needs to tell and make public. We had heard about Rachel on the evening news and the following day we decided to meet her in person and were kindly granted an interview which at that time RU-vid limited a video to only 15-minutes, thus a 2-part interview. While our video wasn't directed toward gardening, we felt it was a story worth sharing with our viewers. We hope to hear Lola's story in our lifetime. During the first gas crunch in '73 or '74, my dad was appalled that it cost $6 to fill up the tank of a 1963 Buick LeSabre with "High Test" gasoline.The old Buick 401 Nail Head engine required it.God only knows what the octane level of that gasoline was!
@WisconsinGarden
@WisconsinGarden 9 лет назад
+ChevKen Richard and I remember regular gas selling for $ .19 a gallon back in 1967. The high octane always seemed to make it run smoother and faster, or was it advertising wishful thinking. We also miss the front seat bench, front wing windows, our '57 Chevy, whitewall tires, stick shift, AC add on, the large steering wheel with the attached suicide knob, foam dice hanging from the mirror, chrome galore, and of course those classic 57 lines. Not sure anyone really thought about gas prices, seatbelts, aerodynamics, or emissions checks back them. It truly was a simpler time in many ways. Who said ignorance is bliss? Thanks for watching and sharing. Lynn & Richard
@michaelbenardo5695
@michaelbenardo5695 2 года назад
Around that time, the octane of fuel fell, so High Test was probably about 96 Octane, regular about 91 octane. High Test fell even further, as pinging and running on increased. I had a 61 with the 364, and the Century 10 - 1 heads, and it got so bad that on a hot day I could switch off the ignition on the freeway and keep on driving, even up hills. I finally replaced those heads with 9 - 1 heads. It no longer pinged with High Test.

I have had only 1 car that didnt break the bank and had 470,000 plus miles. A 1993 ford aerostar 4.0 liter extended. At around 235,000 i had the transmission rebuilt and they dident believe it was the OEM trans. Florida vehicle so rust was not a problem, and i had more money in tires than anything . Digital odometer was the proof no one believed it. most work was done by me. My dad was a ford mechanic up north and we would pull it in the shop on weekends to service it and the outher mechanics all had to check it out. regular service was key. when it was scraped it was drove to the salvage yard, it was rough not worth keeping on the road anymore. I drove it to chicago with around 460,000 something and made it round trip with no problems, just had to add 1qt of oil and it was getting about 1 1/2 mpg less then when miles were lower.

I haven't seen any rust on my '99 yet but when I do I'm ready to sand it down, clean it and spray it with primer/rustoleum as many times as I have to. The trick is to catch it early and to wipe it out and protect. The steel is treated with something because I used to have a trunk leak with a little pond at the bottom and no rust occurred. The pond was there for a week or so.

danwat1234 To those people who like to say "They don't make 'em like they used to". That's right, today's cars do not rust out nearly as bad or as soon as they used to. If you get in high speed wreck, you have a far better chance of surviving in a modern car than you do in an ancientmobile.

Not sure if you’ve heard the update but Rachel Veitch passed away on May 11, 2017 at the age of 98 in Orlando, Florida.
