Finally figured out how to reset the lamp timer in these projectors. NEC claims only a service center with "special software" can reset these. In response to the horrible chat experience I had with "Jared" at NEC, I wanted to share this with the world. All you need is the remote. No special programs or computer gear. I have a picture of the steps near the end of the video if you want to save them for yourself. Thanks for watching.
RESET INSTRUCTIONS (note* The timing is critical, if it doesn't work, try it again and watch the seconds)
Press each key for 3 seconds each time. HELP - ENTER - HELP - ENTER - HELP - ENTER - MENU.
You should now see "Passcode". The pass-code is UP, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT, RIGHT, RIGHT, UP, UP , ENTER (press these normally, not for 3 seconds each). Then press MENU key and you should see 'Service' displayed. You can now go down to Timer and reset the lamp (pick the lamp icon).

Hi, Frank. I have a NEC PA622U without remote. It needs to replace the lamp because it’s down after 3100 hrs. The OEM remoter, RD-466E, is quite extensive. Do you think any compatible NEC remote can work with it for lamp timer reset? Thanks

that one should work for resetting the timer with the holding down help for 10seconds. They are fairly compatible in my experience.

HELLO FRIEND HOPE ALL IS WELL WITH YOU AND YOUR FAMILY. I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH MY NEC VT700 PROJECTOR. IT WAS WORKING PERFECTLY FINE AND ONE DAY WE TURNT IT OFF? TRIED TO TURN IT BCK ON AN IT WILL NOT COME ON FAR AS THE LIGHT SHOWING ON THE SCREEN. THE POWER BUTTON STAYS GREEN THEN TURN ORANGE. THE STATUS AND LIGHT IS BLINKING RED. WE NO LONGER SEE THE BLUE SCREEN TO START ANYTHING. CAN YOU PLEASE HELP? I TRIED TO DO THE RESET WITH THE REMOTE BUT NOTHING IS APPEARING

Hello! We are well, thank you for asking! Please count the number of times the status light is flashing before pausing and then flashing again. It may blink 4 times, then pause and then blink 4 times etc. Please see if it is blinking 4 times, 3 times or 6 times. This will tell us the error code.

I had a VE 281x that would lamp time reset with the reg menu. My remote didn't look like yours.

You may have an older version of the projector. There was a firmware update too at some point. Most do not have the option to reset in the menu though. Usually it was the Help button. Are you sure it wasn't a 280X? They had an onscreen reset with a different remote. I do know there was a firmware revision on the 281 but without seeing yours I can't comment much.

@@FixitFrank Yes mine's probably 4-5 yrs old. That looks like quite an ordeal to reset the hour meter.

@@garbhead it's ridiculous. They were sold to a lot of schools and NEC wants you to send the whole projector back to them to replace the lamp and reset the timer. I contacted them to see if they would help and they flat out told me it needed"special software to reset the timer". Obviously not. Fortunately this looks to be a rare situation, but there are a lot of these out there so hopefully it saves added hassle for someone.

any flashing LEDs? There is no reset option. there is an error occuring that needs to be corrected. Check the manual and verify the LED blink codes. that will tell you what is going on.

We have VE281x's. The help, enter method isn't working. I'm told we may have bought them refurbished, and it looks like all of our remotes are aftermarket. Is there any other potential steps to reset the bulb? I did acquire a service manual, and it does only reference the software route.

Hi Tim, You will see in this video how I did it. That is the only way possible that I found. I spent about a year trying to do it. A real remote is only about $10-20 shipped. It's worth it if you have any amount of these as its the only way to reset the timer.

Hi man, do you know if this procedure is valid for the nec vt48? I cant get the factory menu to reset the lamp timer, or do yo know when i can found the instructions for the nec vt48 proyector? Tnks a lot

I am not sure. I would try this though. It can't hurt. I found this method in the service manual. That might be your best bet. Also try holding down the help button on the remote for 10 seconds. that is another reset method.

@@soundspark Correct! Most arc lamps will explode if you run them too long. The quartz globe is under high pressure and as the quartz heats and cools over the years, the thermal cycling starts to weaken the structure and eventually they will burst.

I don't follow. HELP - ENTER - HELP - ENTER - HELP - ENTER - MENU is the step. That is 6 button presses for 3 seconds each.(not counting pressing menu) This is right out of the service manual. Unless you mean Press Help/Enter three times. If so, then we are saying the same thing, but in a different way.

Desculpe, não sei o processo exato para VE282. Eu acho que é o mesmo que VE281 mas você não teve sucesso. Acho que você deveria tentar de novo mais vezes. Quando eu fizer isso no VE281, serão necessárias muitas muitas muitas tentativas para pressionar os botões no momento certo. Minha pesquisa diz que o VE282 usa o mesmo software. Isso significa que o processo deve funcionar, mas é difícil acertar o tempo ao apertar os botões. Boa sorte!

Hey Frank, I have NEC VE281 projector. Now there is an Issue of the projector, it is not turning on while if I plugged it turn on as the usual way. It only indicates the power bulb. I have tried by pressing the power button and pressing the remote keys. Can you please help me to solve this issue.

It is the same process. You either don't have the timing right or your remote needs batteries. It took me an hour the first time to get the timing right with the button presses. That is the only option and only method to reset it.

Si el LED de estado es un LED naranja (sin parpadeo), está bloqueado. Pulse el botón "Fuente" durante 10 segundos. Desbloqueará el panel. El manual está aquí pero está en inglés. www.projectorcentral.com/pdf/projector_manual_7239.pdf

Hello Sir, i have a Lt280 and the lamp is not turning on.The status light blinks 6x while the power stays orange... .lamp light not on, but can it still be a bad bulb ? Thanks

That sounds like the lamp has failed. 6 flashes is the error cod for that. If the fans come on and then no light, I would try a new lamp first. VT75LP is the part #. Here is more info. www.purelandsupply.com/nec-lcd-projector-lamp_lt280.html

Thanks Frank for your video ! I own a m271w from NEC that keeps comingback to standby mode, I wanted to try reseting it to factory presets (without the remote control). Do you know how ? That would be great :)

Hello Benoît! If the projector is going into standby without reason, you have something else as a problem. A factory reset will only return the display settings to their original setup. If you have the projector set for ceiling mount, instead of table mount, the settings will change back to table mount. They will not resolve an unwanted shutdown issue. However, I can help you with this. When the projector returns to standby, what do the indicators flash? How many times do they flash before pausing and flashing again? I have a theory that your lamp is failing and the projector is shutting itself off to protect itself. This model uses an NP15LP lamp that will begin to fail after about 1500-2000 hours.

Sounds like its either dirty or has a bad fan. Id check for those issues.

If you get an overheating warning, that is either a fan not spinning at the right speed, or the rpm sensor of a fan is not responding. The other possibility is that a temp sensor is reading too high. I cant really say " this is your problem" without looking at it. You will need to verify each piece and trouble shoot to the root cause. I dont know if you saw but I have quite a few videos on fans and overheating. The same issue apply to most projectors.

I have got NEC LT380 and changed the lamp. USed the remote help button for 10 seconds as per the manual. In the manual, I don't have any procedure to go to service mode. Would you advise me to follow your steps in NECLT380 projector.? In your case the projector had a glow. I don't even have it. please guide.

Hello! I understand. First please tell me what the indicator LEDs are showing you. Be sure the lamp door is fully installed, then try the power button on the projector. I believe it will not turn on but you should see the status and lamp led displaying something. The LEDs may flash a few times, pause and flash again. Please count the flashes and note any LEDs that stay on and do not flash. The combination of the LEDs will tell us what is the problem and possible solution.

@@FixitFrank Thanks very much for your response. LEDs are all solid orange except PC card slot which is Green. It means Staus: Orange, Lamp: Orange, Power: Orange. the orange LEDs are Orange and no change while I try either Help button for 10 secs or Trying to reach Sevice mode.

You need the remote sadly. The only way to reset the hours is with pressing the help button for 10 seconds.

It is impossible. You must have a remote. There is no other way. The commands used do not have buttons on the projector. NEC specifically designed this projector to be as unfriendly to service as possible....At least in my opinion.

I have not tried it personally, but if you have the ability to use the serial port, I wonder if you can send the commands that way as well? I have not tried it. I may try it at some point in the future, but if you are able to, and have the hardware, it may be worth a try. That said, the remotes are very inexpensive. I paid $15USD for it.

on a ve281 (not "x") I have a certain problem: after max 1 min afetr powering up, before even the projector gets initialized, some uniform vertical grid lines appear on the whole screen width, from top to bottom, like a jail door. It seems to me this is "produced" by the controller, since he's responsible with the generation of the projected image and likewise that grid is too uniform to be a hazard phenomenon. Now, this is to be related by the lamp hours, maybe it is a way to say to the user "comme on, give the projector to our service", I personally disagree with that and want to solve it myself. The fact is, I dissablembled the unit on every piece of it (not mentioning the fact that is so poorly constructed, you have to tear down everything literally to get to the fans for example, only the lamp is easily replaced)...it has no air-filter, and no holes near the main fan. I di not have the remote control anymore, so it's a but hard for me to see the counted lamp hours. Another problem is I don't know what would a weared-down lamp manifest itself ? This lamp works pretty well, it heats very fast (

so the lamp works, I mean the image is pretty clear when projected on the wall, on a medium lighted room. Problem is the pysical heating (I don't know to appreciate if this is normal, it's really hot, I can't put my finger on it more than 3-4 seconds) ... Is this lamp really accounted for a near future explosion ? This I don't know ... I'm guessing that if the fan speed would really spin at max speed, that lamp would be somehow normal, maybe a new box hole near the main fan would not hurt also. Ok, I work in a school and I promise, if I will be a decision factor on the purchasing on these projectors in the near future, I WILL REJECT ANY NEC PROPOSALS !

I fully agree with rejecting NEC. I am not a fan of their methods. The bars you describe may be due to a failing lamp, but I would prefer to see a picture or video before saying for sure. Another cause can be a loose or disconnecting LCD cable. Usually that gives you a colored set of lines rather than black. I will need to pull out my 281x to try but I "think" the fan speed at the beginning is normal operation. You can use a multi-brand remote to get into the menu to check ours, or an OEM on eBay is roughly $20US. I am leaning towards and physical problem as well. If you can upload a video or link some pictures of the projected image, I can give you more concise advice. If you handle projector purchasing, then I would definitely stay away from NEC. They have been the worst to deal with in my opinion.

My projector is VE281 plain (no "X"). I checked with a diode-test on a multimeter that the pins 12 and 15 of my VGA cable (DCC port) is connected and not loose, and confirmed, ... anyways, the remote control was my way out of this, trying to activate the service menu and reset the lamp hours. Please check and provide any thoughts of these bars, I still think there are software controlled and intentionally. PS: Is there any projector universal remote out there ? I'm IT guy in a school with projectors in all classrooms but the majority have no remote control (lost I think).
