RoboCop is one of pop-culture's most recognizable heroes but he doesn't get too much love in the world of collectibles. Will NECA deliver fans the best action figure of the titular character with this Ultimate release or will we be waiting another 35 years?

This Robo is basically the 2012 release with a new unmasked head. It’s a shame Neca didn’t try to improve the articulation in any way. They had a decade to do it.

Yep, you can tell they just did it to cash in. It's a lazy re-release disguised in a nice box and shiny paint. Unfortunately, everyone will complain and still buy it. If companies have success not improving a figure, you end up with PLAYMATES who released the same tmnt figures for almost 40 years.

Aesthetic is probably most important overall to me. Then articulation, then accessories (though all figures should come with at least one). It kind of depends on the figure though. If it's Spider-Man, for example, I might put articulation first.

The nature of this design benefits this figure a ton, nearly none of the articulation is visible and that's surprising considering how much there is.

What's important to me depends on the figure. Spider-Man I want good articulation with all the proper hands and good web lines on the suit. Robocop? Not really known for being limber. So as long as he can hit all the poses you'd want him to then start leaning on aesthetic.
@basicfacekick
@basicfacekick Год назад
I like a balance of all 3... articulation, aesthetic, accessories. I know, I want it all. But really, I don't need any one extreme -- Amazing Yamaguchi articulation is too much, I won't ever pose my figures to that extent or that often, I usually look for one or two decent poses and that's it. Super premium finish usually means they sacrifice something else and/or clean out your wallet, see: Hot Toys. And too many accessories mean most are going into a storage bin. NECA tends to hit the sweet spot (Mezco does as well, fairly often). Great sculpts/paint even the occasional soft goods, a fair selection of accessories (compared to Marvel Legends just giving you a set of hands). And, their figures can usually pull some good shapes. This is a nice figure, but MAFEX proved more can be done with the Robocop suit's limitations.

Same, balance of aesthetics and articulations. That's why I'm more comfortable without the butterfly joints, because it kinda prioritize the articulation over aesthetics, which destroys that balance of the two. As long as the silhouette, especially on the shoulder part, is looking cool, i'm alright with standard articulations. When it comes to accessories, if the accessory is part of the character itself, like infinity gauntlets of thanos, it should have it. While extra hands like fisted and relax hands will suffice.

Excellent review, Anthony. As always, though. So you’re aware, the gun sits on a peg that loops through the trigger guard. It’s an awkward jumble to get it in and out without damaging the mechanism, at least on the original release, but some finagling should wedge itself in there. When it’s seated properly, it does not deploy outward toward the right hand, as you accurately mention should be the case. However, the mechanism does allow the gun to be holstered inside the leg for storage, when the accessory is not in use. Ultimately it’s useless outside of storage or a specific usage for ACBA. Cheers!

I agree with you. Plus too many accessories makes it too difficult to decide how to display them lol. I like simple, accessories are nice but if you have an excellent looking figure that also has excellent articulation you don't need accessories. I mean let's be honest we're all adults here, we don't play with these figures, if you're a kid that plays with them then the extras might be important. But they stand on my shelf
@Toyboughtdave
@Toyboughtdave Год назад
I agree with you Anthony as far as the question of the day. I like articulation but the older I get (I’m 34) the more I’m concerned with aesthetics of the sculpt and paint. That’s why I like Neca and DST over Hasbro/Mattel and even McFarlane to a certain extent. Accessories are always nice. Key accessories should come with the figure.
@Jas-1119
@Jas-1119 Год назад
Same mindset as you on the articulation and aesthetic. I love accessories and all, but with certain characters it matters to me. Long as Robo has his firearm, the data spike, and a swappable head or two. I’m typically happy. Which looks like they covered all that. Really looking forward to the battle damaged and chair version of this guy. Articulation looks as expected, I’m not bashing NECA at all. But I really want to see some other companies tackle RoboCop and the Terminator stuff. I know Mafex has something coming out, same with Hiya toys, but I want someone else to give it a try. I had hoped that the leg or the shoulders would’ve been a softer or more flexible plastic for better posing but I can’t imagine that unless it was like the predator’s armor.
@fortressmattimus3984

For a collector piece, the aesthetic is the most important because it'll mostly be on a shelf. For a toy, articulation is most important because it'll be played with and articulation makes them infinitely more fun to handle

A balance of articulation and aesthetics for sure. I like the figure to be accurate and in proportion, and I like to not be too limited with posing. Posing too, that will vary from character to character. Like a Spider-man versus a Hulk, you can excuse limitations and differences due to character design.

I agree that the articulation is lack luster. The shoulder could’ve add some sort of ratcheted piston like bar that slid in and out to give his arm some give. Or at least that’s what would make sense to me, I’m sure that would’ve been more of a cost. BUT with that said, I think it looks great. I didn’t expect him to be super posable anyway. His build alone sold me and I can’t wait to ship mine

You know once I saw that the Alex Murphy figure has the gun spin hand, I really wish they put one in this release of RoboCop. In the movie it’s the first sign that Murphy and Robocop are the same guy. Not a dealbreaker, but would’ve been a really nice touch for an “ultimate” figure

Articulation, Accessories, Aesthetic? You hit the nail on the head with those 3. Those are the things I look for in them all. If you can't pose them, you might as well get a statue. The more accessories you have, the more variety you get out of poses. As an artist, the aesthetic is something I can adjust. I can add more paint, but if the scale is off, or it has fabric clothing, or does not look like the character, I don't want to bother with it.
@venomsjunkmail

Would the arms have gotten better range if they put the joint further up the shoulder? Same with the legs? I was thinking of grabbing this but I want more articulation from Murphy. I know he's clunky but if he can't hit a large stride arm stretched out to the side shooting pose it's a pass for me.
@PowerChordEPS
@PowerChordEPS Год назад
A combination of the three, they all factor differently depending on the figure. Aesthetic: As long as it resembles who it's supposed to be, I'm satisfied. Finishes and the sort play a part I.e. a matte/satin finish is overall the best unless something's supposed to be glossy (Patent leather, metal, etc.) but honestly anatomy isn't a big deal unless it's completely ridiculous. Accessories: The more the merrier, they add value to a piece, as a photographer/amateur stop motion animator, I like having different heads/hands for expressions and other accessories sometimes work for set dressing or props for a scene. Every figure should at least have alternate parts unless they're going for the retro/nostalgic vibe (DC Super Powers, WWE Retros, any Kenner-inspired retro line) Articulation: If I had to pick, this is my most important factor, but not in the way most would think. There's a sweet spot of articulation between say classic McFarlane statue figures and ToyBiz Marvel Legends/Revoltech's hyper-articulation. I think it depends on the character's power set or physique: someone like Spider-Man needs to be super agile and flexible, but a bigger guy like The Hulk can get away with lesser POAs. Most figures should at least have decent joints in your major areas like the neck, arms, midsection, etc. Looking at Robocop, aesthetic is practically spot on, accessories are enough though I'd add another left hand, articulation is most definitely the weak point and what ultimately leaves me cold enough to unfortunately skip this one, at full price anyway. They basically used the old buck rather than redesign the figure. I get it, Robocop isn't going to do yoga, but at the very least they could have added a swivel to the elbow, wrist hinges, and another system for the hips beyond the dreaded V-Hips.
@whozyourdaddy
@whozyourdaddy Год назад
Toys are meant to be played with so articulation matters most to me. It could be the most gorgeous sculpt in the world, but if it's no fun in hand, I don't want it. Robocop is the perfect example of that.

1. Aesthetic 2. Accessories (more heads, hands and weapons please) 3. Articulation (As long as it is at least average or appropriate for the character it doesnt matter all that much to me...i.e. characters like Spider-Man, Black Panther and Daredevil should have great articulation but if the Juggernaut or Hulk is just a stiff chunk of plastic it doesnt matter to me.)

Anthony, I always go by these few things: has to be, at least, 5 - 8 inches tall, multiple points of articulation (including double jointed knees and elbows), and has to have, at least, 4 - 6 accessories.

If I remember correctly I don't think they could get the rights from Peter Weller for his face 10 years ago. I know in the special DVD commentary that suit was a pain in the ass for him to move around in so it's no surprise that the articulation on a figure would be limited too. Since they have his likeness now I really really really really wish they would do buckaroo bonsai figures.

While I also agree with the balance between aesthetic and articulation, the latter is what I actually immediately check in terms of specs. Anything below 32 points would be disappointing because it would usually mean the figure would have single jointed elbows and/or knees.

I bought the new neca ed-209 a couple of weeks ago, never got the original, they also had this one but as I own the original figure I didn't get it. Other than the silver paint looking a bit better, To me, on this one I can't see a reason to replace my original. I wouldn't ever use the unmasked head. And to answer the question. Aesthetic, I don't pose figures so articulation doesn't matter, and I'm usually happy with accessories.

Aesthetics and articulation for me, though aesthetics wins out if I had to pick just one. Take Robocop here, he had very limited movement in the movie and what's present here would be good enough for my posing needs, at that point what matters more to me is how good the figure looks on my shelf. Of course good articulation is huge for getting shelf presence out of a figure, and the whole point of a figure is being able to play around and get it into a dynamic pose, so I don't want to seem like I'm totally dismissive of that quality either.

I always wanted a robocop figure since i was kid. Always something expensive, which i never even asked for it when i was a kid. I saw this on sale on my local store, and wondered for a week or 2, if i buy it or not. I ended up with , for being robocop and a dream that could be true. And, articulation is awful. I can't have wrist swivel , because its so tight , so tight, I feel i will brake it. but, if i had robocop as kid, it would not be this articulated. So i am thankful for the opportunity i got

I have to agree on your point of the what matters most. While accessories are nice and add a few extra features to a figure they aren't the be all end all when I decide to buy one. I want a figure that looks good, whether it be a comic representation or a movie re-creation I want it to Look like the character I remember. Also posability is vital. I hope it has good articulation, but nowadays that's a 50/50 chance. My HOPE is it looks good and poses well. But in the end I think we end up just being happy if it looks decent and doesn't break easily. That's sad! Also the muzzle flash for the gun, horrible is the nicest way to put it. I won't say what it looks like except to say it would be a better accessory for a adult film star action figure. NUFF SAID!

Short answer, articulation, then aesthetic then accessories. Long version. The way to answer it is to look at the extremes, if it has only one of them than an aesthetically perfect figure with 0 articulation is factually not a figure, it is a statue. Often i find a well made figure with poseability look better to me than a well made statue even though the statue has no cuts. I think part of that is my brain understands the utility in having poseability. I just got one of the ToyBiz Spider-Man 2 figures and i find it more appealing than any statue i have seen of that Spider-Man. I do think that there should be a focus on keeping the aesthetics as close to a great statue as possible while increasing the possibility. There is a point when you loose more aesthetically than you gain poseability. The greatest example for me currently is the Mafex Spider-man compared to the Revoltech one. The Mafex Spider-man is an 8-9 in both poseability and aesthetic while revoltech is a 10 (or as close as is reasonable) in poseability, but to get the 1 extra point in poseability they gave up 6-8 points of the aesthetic depending on who you ask. The Mafex Spider-Man is close to what i consider the perfect mix of aestethics and poseability.

If a figure looks terrible it's a no go, but articulation is number one. I used to customize GI Joes into wrestlers, hockey players and superheroes before I knew action figure customizing was a thing because they were the only figures with acceptable articulation in the early 90s. I couldn't bring myself to just smack un-posable figures together while I played. I was pretty good for an 11 year old who thought he was the only customizer on earth, but the aesthetic was heavily compromised.

I think aesthetic naturally wins out, if a figure looks like hot garbage then all the articulation and accessories in the world won’t save it. Articulation is second though, when it comes to articulation for a figure based on a well known IP, it should be able to pull off a few of their iconic poses. After all it’s an action figure not a statue. Accessories it depends on the price, if it’s under $35 then it should have an alternative head and or a set of hands, and at least one prop.

A blend of articulation and asthenic 100% I don’t want a figure where the articulation completely ruins the aesthetic, but then on the other hand Don’t like when the figure sacrifices tons of articulation for aesthetic. If I had to pick one, I’d rather the figure have a better aesthetic and less articulation. Most of the time they’re in pretty vanilla poses on my shelf, so if the figure looks ugly in a vanilla pose then I’m out. That’s why I don’t give McFarlane so much hate for their lack of articulation because most times they look great in just a vanilla pose

I'd kill to have an ultimate Robocop with more articulation in the arms. Idiots at NECA just gave us a rerelease with Peter Weller's likeness. Sure, its good to have the likeness now, but come on! Murphy can't pull his shoulders in to hold the Cobra with both arms, and no additional elbow bends to hold the Auto-9 in standby.
@vgamer11

The spring-loaded mechanism in the leg leads me to believe that this is just a slightly modified version of the last Robocop they made (the spring-loaded holster version from 2011-2012), with some extra accessories. If I'm correct then that would explain the poor movability.

I'm not sure if you aware but this is the exact same figure as they made more than 10 years ago. They changed nothing physically about the figure, it has all of the same mistakes, like you said poor articulation, narrow head, and while you enjoy the leg holster it is extremely fragile. The springs are too strong for the plastic and will eventually break. I would remove them and just operate it manually. Mafex has given the blueprint for what a 6 inch Robocop could be. This should of had double elbows and knees, a waist ball joint, a muzzle flash that made sense (see figma or mafex) and some extra hands. Any update would have been appreciated, but Neca got lazy and cashed in. The only thing added worthwhile is the Murphy headsculpt and the paint being somewhat nicer. I guess since it wasn't a TMNT figure Neca didn't give a crap.

This is accurate! They had the opportunity to upgrade this old figure into something special, but decided to do a straight re-issue. Robocop should be way more mobile than this figure represents. All of the joints here are trash. The sculpt is good, as well as the paint, but the articulation is an insult.

@@AnthonysCustoms I can only speak to the 2011 release as I dont have the new one yet, but I've had the old one blow apart when the release tab was pressed. It always felt risky opening and closing it. This could have been a great figure with a few updates, but since I have the first one and waited for so long for a new one this feels like a disappointment. And to answer your question, you are correct, Robocop never had a potbelly, unless he ate too much babyfood.

Sorry for another comment, but I had to mention that in the past as you also stated Neca's "Ultimate" figures always had the most accessories. For instance the Nightmare on Elm Street III: Dream Warrior Ultimate Freddy figure, it came with the Popsicle house 🏠 that Kristen or Kirsten made. It had the syringe 💉💉💉💉💉fingers Freddy uses on the one female patient who was recovering from drugs. There was more as well. I forget the total amount, but the Ultimate lines always were the "definitive" figure of the series. This IS decent I will agree with you there. The look is spot on. I'd say 8.5 or 9/10. Articulation, um, what Articulation....lol, sorry. In all seriousness though the articulation is not completely bad, but darn close. I'd say 4-4.5/10, maybe a 5/10 with the thigh trick. It would have made sense however for them to at the very least have a holder inside for the gun. They didn't have to make it like the movie where when the thigh opened up the guns holder popped out where Robocop could grab it easily. This was basically a incomplete gimmick. Cool but unfinished. Your review was spot on. Since I didn't get this figure back in 2012 or whenever it first was released, I would probably say that I'd get this one, IF the stores here actually stock it. Thanks for the info. It's really helpful in deciding whether or not a figure is worth getting. This one looks great 8-9/10, poses pfft, 4-5/10, and accessories are also decent but not exceptional, a 5.5-6/10. Overall I'd say or give it a 18.5-20/30 or a 6-6.5/10. Not bad but not Ultimate. However if you didn't get this figure last run, like me, I'd say it's worth it, as it does really look exceptionally detailed and well done in appearance. If you have it already than I'd pass. Wait and see if they make a Battle Damaged Robocop, or maybe a Ultimate ULTIMATE? LOL!!😆🤣😆🤣😂

Aesthetic, Articulation and Accessories. The head is definitely too narrow, he has the beer gut and it’s a rehash of the figure Neca released 10 years ago. Love both guns and the data spike, I dislike the muzzle flash, NECA has made better. I love the Predator figures so I’m disappointed that they would release this quality of a Robocop figure I might wait for the battle damage one with the chair. I get the feeling that a lot of these be around and be easy to get. Thanks for the review.

Hmm, I've been looking forward to this figure being an affordable alternative to Mafex's offering, but its articulation is very disappointing, especially considering how many strides NECA have taken these past few years to make their figures posable. I have the 4-inch Hiya Toys version and even that figure has a little more articulation (90° bend at the elbows, slightly better ab crunch, nice ankle rocker) considering it's a good bit smaller. I may have to consider shelling out the cash for the Mafex...

The Actors name is Peter Weller. What a lot of people don't remember is the bad guy was the Dad from that 70's Show. Red Foreman or his real name Kurtwood Smith. In Robocop he was Clarence Boddicker. A really nasty guy! He was one of the bad guys who killed the Peter Weller character, Murphy. There were some great actors in that movie, still one of my favorites as well. The re-boot was crap though. Robocop CAN'T be PG-13.

GREAT REVIEW. Years ago I stopped collecting from NECA (IT IS WITHOUT A DOUBT ONE OF THE BEST) but unfortunately IT FALLS, SLIPS, AND RETURNS TO THE SAME CYCLE with the same figures and Licenses, it makes several figures of the same thing with a new accessory and then new packaging and when He doesn't find what else to do, he unites everything already done and calls them ULTIMATE, which ruins collecting the first figure you've bought IS NOT WORTH ANYTHING, To give an example I bought the MICHAEL KEATON 1989 BATMAN when it first came out, several years ago, HOW MANY TIMES HAS NECA DONE IT AGAIN? I actually have a question to your fans and viewers and yourself if you could spare a minute. We've had massive issues with distribution here. We're lucky, no it's a miracle if we see a Marvel Legends wave that is one of the more popular lines, like the🕷🕸Spider-Man🕸🕷 series or the X-Men lines. The 🕷🕸Spider-Man🕸🕷 retro series for example, I saw one figure from the entire wave, 🦂Scorpion🦂 and I found it stuffed under a shelving at Target. My buddy found me a JJ Jameson figure, but that was it. The Mysterio my favorite villain, well tied with the 🦎Lizard🦎, then closely behind the Kingpin, the 🦂Scorpion🦂, and ⚡Electro⚡. Finding or even seeing any of these was like searching for Bigfoot. The giant Abominable Snowman ⛄ not the monster truck....lol. The X-Men line was another one that never got to us OR was nabbed instantly by either workers, or as in some cases Target employees were holding on to cases of Star Wars Black Series figures, Marvel Legends, Funko Pops, and the biggest scalpers dream, Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars. In a laughable event Target was scheduled to get 20 cases of Hot Wheels for a dump bin display. They opened at 8am, by 8:05am all 20 cases were gone. I'm curious if everyone is having this problem? Here scalpers outnumber collectors 20-1. Add to that they are extremely organized and have people on a payroll. Yep a payroll. One guy here has, or had before school began school kids who would sit at Targets, Wal-Marts, or anyplace where Die-Cast cars or action figures are sold. He also had been paying Stockers at multiple Target stores to hold cases of Die-Cast cars and again action figures for him. He runs a eBay store which makes massive cash. $50.00➕ for a Super Treasure Hunt from Hot Wheels. Some even higher. Usually about $20.00➕ but for a $1.00 item? And say you get even 10 or 15 a month? That's $200.00-$300.00 for JUST THAT ITEM! Not including the other cars in the case, or the countless action figures they also get and sell. They are making thousands of dollars ripping off collectors who can't find these figures themselves. Why? Because THEY are hoarding them all. My comment is two fold, #1 DON'T SUPPORT scalpers! If you like me, I prefer to see the figure I'm buying. But now with the windowless boxes, it doesn't matter. That's why I didn't buy online. Nowadays BBTS, and actual RETAIL REAL RETAILERS are about the only chance we have. My main concern or question is, how is the distribution in your area? Are the stores full? Or at least stocking the Toy Department? Are Die-Cast cars available? What about Star Wars Black Series figures and Marvel Legends? Again the ONLY ones we had a bulk amount of were the two pfft movies, Shang Chi & the Legend of the 10 💍 Rings or whatever it was called, and the Angelina Jolie movie the Eternals. Those ended up on the clearance shelf for $3.00-$7.00. Again I'm curious if scalping in your cities is as much of a problem as it is here? If so how do you somehow manage to find your wishlist without paying an arm and/or a leg for? I ask because I am disabled, I have serious mobility issues, meaning I can barely walk let alone run, so when the door open at Target stores and Wal-Mart stores I am not in the "running" for finding a case. I've had a complete hop replacement from serious arthritic problems stemming from work and other issues. I've ha see one surgery on my right knee and now need another one. I've been in respiratory ICU for several lung issues. Bronchial Pneumonia, double pneumonia, and there was an incident where I got sepsis. A severe infection. I'm not sure of the extent or even the reasons but I was bad!! I found out that I have the disease that took my Mother's life. Emphysema. So THAT is why I asked about the stocking, the scalping, and the issues, non-issues, and how you solved the issues if any. I've LOVED Die-Cast cars since I was 5. Also action figures since the days of the MEGO SUPERHEROES! &the original Star Wars 3.75" inch 5 POA figures. Except now I can't hunt like I used to. Any decent advice would help. And yes it's a terminal illness, but I still would like to enjoy my last few years with memories and experiences I had as a kid. So of your goal is to mock and ridicule, why? Being told you have a terminal illness beats anything anyone could say so? Just don't, please!
