New England's Orchid hotspot is typically thought of as Vermont, and the far northern regions of New Hampshire and Maine, where calcareous fens, bogs and coniferous swamps create excellent habitat for Showy Orchids, Showy and Yellow Lady's Slippers, Twayblades, and others. The basic (High-pH) soil here is what many of our native Orchids crave! But even in the southeast, where the thin and leached coastal soils and acidic metamorphic bedrock are more likely to form acidic barrens and glades, there are fascinating Orchid species, including what is likely the most famous Orchid species common in New England. Join me on an in-depth discussion on two acidic soil specialists - The Large Whorled Pogonia, Isotria verticillata and Cypripedium acaule, the Pink Lady's Slipper!
Plants of interest:
Isotria verticillata - "Large Whorled Pogonia"
Cypripedium acaule - "Pink Lady's Slipper"
Quercus alba - "Northern White Oak"
Acer rubrum - "Red Maple"
Maianthemum canadense - "Canada Mayflower"
Medeola virginiana - "Cucumber Root"
Lysimachia borealis - "Starflower"
Prunus virginiana - "Chokecherry"
