Ned Beatty was one of Hollywood’s most successful character actors. Variety once described him as the “busiest actor in Hollywood”.
From surviving the wild-water rapids in Deliverance to his Oscar nominated performance in Network and later his role as Luther’s sidekick, Otis, in the original Superman films, Beatty displayed an extraordinary range as an actor.
Blessed with a fine singing voice his showbiz-career began in the theatre before British director John Boorman pulled him from relative obscurity to star alongside Burt Reynolds and Jon Voight in the redneck thriller Deliverance.
He also co-starred in All The Presidents Men, The Big Easy with Dennis Quaid, The Fourth Protocol and Toy Story, as well as numerous TV series including a recurring role in Roseanne. In all, more than 160 TV and film credits.
But Back in 1988, I caught up with Ned in Toronto, on the set of Switching Channels with Chris Reeve, Burt Reynolds and Kathleen Turner.
The movie is an update of the old romantic comedy The Front Page.
Now, I knew very little about Ned at the time, and so I got him talking about his start in the industry.
Ned was a great character actor and his credits are testimony to the wide array of characters he brought to the big and small screen. And, as he explained, he married four times and fathered 8 children. Clearly, a very busy man.
He was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and worked steadily into his mid-70s until he passed away in 2021 at the age of 83.
