Nedbank Namibia showcases the fourth year of “Kapana Cook-off”
Kapana Cook off between popular Media houses to launch national competition.
For the fourth year in a row, Nedbank Namibia will host the “Kapana Cook off” in search of Namibia’s best Kapana varieties. To mark the launch of this celebrated competition, Nedbank together with partners - Bakpro, Meatma and Pick n Pay hosted twelve media houses on Friday, 18 May 2018 at the Kraal in Windhoek.
The media houses entered teams of two, competing to make their own salsa and prepare Kapana, subsequent to a cooking demonstration held by experienced Kapana vendors. The judging was done by the Namibia Chefs Association who placed emphasis on: hygiene, presentation and taste. Journalists were challenged to put their best foot forward in the kitchen, in the hope of scooping up the first place at the cook off.
The competition was a fun filled event and our Namibian journalists made use of the opportunity to reveal their skillset that goes beyond that of the newsroom. The results and attention to detail by the teams certainly gave some ‘masterchef’ contestants a run for their money! “Nothing brings people together like good food,” said Nedbank’s Head of SME Business Nelson Simasiku, during his welcome remarks. “We are so pleased to host you, today is perfectly simulated for you to understand first-hand the type of pressures, challenges and excitement our participants will undergo during the competition,” Simasiku said.
As journalists chopped away at onions and tomatoes for their salsa, some media colleagues were seen wiping away tears of joy, while others were bending backwards trying to figure out just the right amount of time to cook the meat on the open fire. Kapana braai is not for the faint hearted and our journos quickly grew a great appreciation for the time and effort our Kapana vendors invest in refining their unique Kapana art. Media teams skilfully worked together to score the best results and appease the judges.
All partners agreed that they could not think of a better way to commence the national cook off competition than hosting a little teaser event for the local media fraternity. Media colleagues did not disappoint, arriving with their game faces on, eager to demonstrate that their “Kapana game” is strong.
It was all round fun and laughs when the prize for the best-dressed team was awarded to the team from popular radio station, 99FM. They called themselves the “Doeksusters,” wearing colorful African themed headscarves. A unanimous decision was reached when the judges announced the Namibia Press Agency (NAMPA) team as the most jovial. Their fun-loving spirit and cheery disposition throughout the competition earmarked these ‘naturals’ for the prize from the onset.
The day ended on a high note once the judges’ completed their tasting rounds and announced team Informant as the 1st place winners! Real cooking is more about following your heart than a recipe, and it was clear that the winners had a thorough understanding of this.
Entries are now open to the National competition and forms may be collected from your nearest Nedbank branch.
