Naval News attended NEDS 2019, the NDIV exhibition for defense and security in Rotterdam. We focused on the Walrus-class submarine replacement program.

The Walrus replacement program calls for three (or four, the B-letter will give the final number) new submarines with deliveries starting in 2027. The Dutch Navy seeks a large conventionnal submarine of about 3,000 tons in displacement. It must be able to conduct long oceanic transit in order to reach the Dutch Antilles rapidly.

Minimale lengte achter drukhuid moet toch minstens 70 mtr zijn, het beste zou zijn een lengte van 80-90 mtr en mijn voorkeur gaat uit naar Damen-Saab, NOOIT met Fransen in zee gaan

The Navel Group sub with out nuclear would be the Australian-Navel Group Attack class sub... Australia needs Netherlands skill to help make this the best Sub in the world.. So come onboard Netherlands..

Nice interesting video 👍 Hopefully The Dutch Navy would select & acquire Submarines with AIP (Air Independent Propulsion) and Lithium-Ion Batteries (instead of conventional batteries), that would allow them to operate underwater without surfacing for up to 30 days! AIP + Li-Ion Battery combo allows a Conventional Submarine to do what a Nuclear Submarine does, at 1/4 the cost!

They are generally still slower and have less range. Great regional subs, but still aren't as good globally.

@@davidhouseman4328 Since Dutch Navy wants Ocean going Submarines they can adapt there submarine Operational Procedure to operate AIP+Li-Ion Battery combo Submarines. If you search & see on RU-vid : FC2G AIP by Naval Group, you will notice they offer Diesel oil reforming technology, which means there AIP system converts diesel fuel into Hydrogen on-board the submarine which is then used to run the Fuel Cells. Thus when the Submarine Commander wants to transit from home port in Netherlands to say Middle East, he can use Snorkel (via on-board Diesel Engines) to recharge Submarines batteries in friendly waters, when the Submarine reach Theater of Operation, because the submarine has AIP, it can stay underwater for up to 30 days, as the submarine would operate for 5-6 days on Li-Ion Batteries and recharge it's batteries underwater with AIP on 6th/7th day, since Li-Ion Batteries have much higher energy density than conventional lead-acid batteries. Also Li-Ion Batteries gives the submarine a quick Sprint/Dash capability to evade torpedo Attack. All in all it is better to invest in technology for future, to be prepared than be sorry later.

In my opinion The Dutch Definitely shouldn’t do business with Naval group, we just have seen how the French companies with backup from the French government do business, remember Air France/KLM! If the Dutch want a product that’s not a B version of the French subs they should let Damen/Saab built a sub for the Dutch navy. Working with the Zweeds would be learning full and a opportunity for our own industry and maybe something beautiful for the future. Second best option would be TKMS Germans are always reliable partners and they always make good quality products.

@Quincy The Great kockums has designed and co-managed the build of the Collins class submarine of the RAN which does exactly that . It is a 3400 ton true long distance expeditionary sub that can stay submerged for 21 days+ and submerged range of 17,000 Kim's @ 10 knots periscope depth. They can utilise all the know how and lessons learnt (and there are many) from this build and truly construct something exceptional.

@obese-anorexia FYI KLM did not buy Air France. KLM and AF merged in 2004, and both French and Dutch government own approx 14% each of the holding company.

Too many lobbyists near our Military personnel of rank makes me uncomfortable. We need way more control via of political parties on every aspect of the procedures and processes to the minute details at every stage.

Very interesting race, similar to Australian Navy requirements, do you play it safe but with an improve design or unproven design, has benefits of working with Australia who could share repairs/parts but could experience of rescuing if submarine has problems far away?

obese-anorexia I can agree with that, the Australian design is big n still been talk about as by time finish Attack class submarines they will out of date because length of build time.

Quincy - If a country has the capability to Build a Nuclear Submarine they can certainly Build a Conventionally Powered one - that should be obvious.The US Navy is well funded and can afford an all -Nuclear Fleet.The Royal Navy can (just) about afford one or the other but not both,perhaps that will change in the future.The last Conventional Subs built in the UK (Upholder Class) didn't stay in service long but after a painful sale to the Canadian Navy they are proving to be quite effective.

@Quincy The Great The Dutch navy had plans to buy 32 tomahawk in the 00s for the Zeven Provinciën-class frigates. Sell was approved by the US but the Dutch government decide in the end not to buy them do budget cuts. Saab has the go for integration tomahawk cruise missile for the polish orca programe. If the Polish government select SAAB to build their new submarine. SAAB and DAMEN have also team up with Babcock from the UK, Babcock will provide the Dutch A26`s with VLS if selected by the Dutch government. VLS provided by Babcock can also lanch drones and can store diving equipment for the Dutch special forces. Thales UK will provide the A26 with Sonar 2076 suite. This will give SAAB and DAMEN a technological age

@obese-anorexia The Australian Attack class submarine will have US weapons and command system provided by Lockheed Martin. There is no reason why the Dutch cannot do the same. The Dutch Defensie Industrie Strategie (DIS) state that the most work must be done in the Netherlands
