Hot water is such a normal part of American society and it is a treat to have, but if the water heater breaks…It is something that is solely missed! Great video Rachel! I'll remember you if I have any plumbing problems. 😉 Just wanted to add that with ELECTRIC water heaters, its important to shut the power off to the water heater FIRST, ottherwise, the second you drain the water, you'll blow your elements. This heater was NG, so that step wasn't needed, but if anyone with an electric water heater wants to do the same thing, that's an important step.

When we had a gas water heater we'd sometimes get drips falling on top of the burner, especially when we used a bunch of hot water. I think the extra cold water coming in cooled off the flue inside the water heater and the water vapor from the burner condensed and dripped back down. Never put out the pilot light though.

When we had our water heater replaced three years ago a female plumber did the work. Just like in this vid a male coworker dropped in for the heavy lifting. But otherwise she did the installation. Only difference was her clothing was somewhat of a looser fit than Rachel's. 🙂

Good job, a couple of suggestions though - I would have painted the base wood with a good outdoor paint e.g. decking paint, to stop them rotting like the others and repair the side panel which had a big hole in it. Plus put a insulation jacket on the heater, this will save money and the environment.

Rachel, think about what a blessing a water heater today. In Egypt, I stayed in a 3-star hotel, by my ratings, with no water heater as far as I could tell. A cold shower in Egypt was not what I expected for the price I paid. Fava beans were good in the morning, but a cold shower only available in the year 2014? I liked some of the Egyptians there who were probably Christian by how they treated me, but their technology is, perhaps, 19th century too much. The customer service, however, was usually good to maybe elite.

6:58 When you are done put a bright light inside the Water heater cabinet and see if you see light, the water heater requires air to breathe so it can maintain a fire, no air no fire, from what I can tell the only place it is getting air is where the wood is rotten on the side of the cabinet.

@rachelmichellepizzolato When you moved your arm at part 0:06 in the video, I saw a very large hole at the very bottom of the wall on the right side of your friend shed. Is that very large hole supposed to be use for ventilation? At my house I use those foam insulation that cover water pipe for both hot and cold water. You should go back and put foam insulation over the hot water line, so it won't get cold and still stay hot. I know some people will say it is unnecessary to cover hot water lines with foam insulation, but I do it anyways.

Rachel!!! A pipe wrench on hexes?? Proper tool is Crescent adjustable pliers. Good job on the gas line, though. Adjustable wrench, check. Bubble test for leaks, check!!
